Women in the Technology Field

Women in the Technology Field The revolution of technology had begun centuries ago; it had been the work of many over the years to bring it where it is today. It entailed people with bright imaginations to come up with technological inventions. These inspiring designs were then taken and built upon to improve its operation. Finally computers were no longer a revolution, but an evolution. During the course of time many men as well as women were affected by technology. Unfortunately, women have not received the same form of acceptance as the men in this field of work. After careful research, women in technology, they found it was difficult to find the names of women influential in technology. In the era when women are increasingly prominent in many industries, there are few women in technology. There are many reasons some women might avoid a career in the technology field. Technology advancement and improvements increase the separation between genders, which show that industrialization and the principles of gender influence each other. Men and women have very different decision making-processes when assessing new technology. In the past, women were considered to be incapable to perform on the same level as men when dealing with technology. Women have been mainly seen as the “stay at home and take care of the kids” person. The majority of professionals in the technology field are male; these are manly environments in which women do not feel comfortable and unwelcome. It leads to unwanted behavior that includes expressing negative stereotypes of women and the telling of dirty jokes in an attempt at humor. Women should not have to endure the “locker room atmosphere” while in a work environment. Other activities are morally faultless, such as male coworkers engaging in basketball in which women fell less part of a group, especially if she does not enjoy the same activities. From the construction industry to computer engineering, the perception of women’s intellectual level as well as their ability to perform has been not only radically low, but also alarming. Computer trade shows and technical conferences are often more male dominated than the workplace or academic environments. Women are outnumbered by men at industry and academic conferences. At trade shows, companies have “historically employed attractive women to draw attention to product exhibits or booths” (LaPlante, 1989, p. 58). While this practice has been declining, there are reports that state it is not declining. Women are treated better at technical conferences that at trade shows, but are often propositioned by male attendees. This problem has discouraged friendships with colleagues who could be useful contacts for the women in this field and unintentionally offends potentially important men. In the technology field some people consciously believe women are less capable which can lead to different treatment from men. There are those who acknowledge that women succeed at engineering, but are considered to be “somehow suspect”, in which women are held to different standards. They are not treated equally as men or even as individuals; these are situations of a more fundamental problem, lower expectations for women. Women are often asked fewer or easier questions than men, superiors often make contact with men before women, and more likely to know and use the names of their male employees than of female employees. Behaviors of men are sometimes considered attractive but not in women, there is something about our culture’s view of male-dominated field such as engineering that causes female aspirants to be considered unattractive. When speaking women are often interrupted more than men and are believed to be less technically inclined. There are many women encouraged to explore the opportunities in the technology field by family and educators, but some feel they are not able to compete with men. There is no equal opportunity to have feminine workers in an already male dominated field. This is part of the problem which has not yet found a solution. Affirmative action: policies that take factors including “race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group “in areas of employment, education, and business”, usually justified as countering the effects of history of discrimination. It is similar with lowered standards; there are affirmative action programs that have goals to ensure all applicants considered in an objective manner. Many companies in the technology field have lowered their expectations for women; they still think females should not work full time or have eighty hour work weeks. Females are expected to be home to take care of the household, not to be career driven as men, this would be unfeminine. There are many recommendations for women to change the future of the male dominated computer technology field. The majority of these changes have already been implemented throughout the United States. As stated on the EEOC website; it is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be of sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex. Both victim, and the harasser can be either a woman or man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex. Although the law does not prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that may not be very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive environment or when it results in an adverse decision(such as the firing or demotion of the victim). The harasser can be the victim’s supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a coworker, or someone who is an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer. (“Eeoc”,n.d.) Women are encouraged to attend coed classes so they are not treated differently from the males, there are many colleges and career services that can help with these kinds of issues. If there was an easier way to encourage women to enter this field it should be done. There are plenty of male dominated work forces throughout the entire world and just a little encouragement from one female can do wonders for the next female to enter the world of technology. There are groups that help young women become more interested in pursuing a career in the technology field. One group is Girls in Technology(GIT), which helps to support and initiate programs to foster technology for females. Women in Technology(WIT), which is a not-for-profit organization with the mission of advancing women in technology – form the classroom to the boardroom – by providing advocacy, leadership development, networking, mentoring and technology education. It is the premier organization empowering women to be architects of change in the technology industry. Another group is the National Center for Women & Information Technology(NCWIT), a not-for-profit group that works to correct the imbalance of gender diversity in technology and computing because gender diversity positively correlates with a larger workforce, better innovation, and increased business performance. While there may be some challenges, the fact still remains that women are not well represented in the technology field, which continues to be a male dominated field. Women have made some progress in the technology field over the past decade, but there is still the lack of women’s interest as well as participation in technology is in need of change. There are strategies that may influence young women to pursue careers in this field which can include no stereotypes, encourage female students, and providing a positive classroom setting to meet the need of the diverse group of females. People are not purposely trying to discourage women from the technology field, but the behavior is often subconsciously influenced by stereotypes that they may not even realize they have. With a positive attitude, women can make the most of their situation. They should not feel less powerful than men, nor should they feel it is the race that will never be won be women. It only takes one women to reach the top of the technology food chain to make a difference. Though there has not been a dramatic change brought about by these problems women face, the future of women in the technology field will hopefully increase.

The Advancement of Technology in the Medical Field

...The Advancement of Technology in the Medical Field Technology in general has greatly improved in the last 50 or 60 years, but especially in the medical field. A lot of what drives the medical field today is computers. Computers have gone from being the size of a small room to being able to fit in the palm of your hand. The first computer was actually a calculator. With the advancements in being able to reduce the size of the integrated circuit or IC chips, also known today as microchips, they have gone from being able to fit a couple transistors on a chip to being able to implement billions of transistors on a single chip about the size of $.50 piece. With this we have really been able to advance the technology in the medical field. We have also been able to improve microscopes to be able to better see inside cells and to identify the different bacteria and viruses that infect humans and other plants and animals. Being able to better identify what is causing an illness, treatment can be greatly improved. Today there are cameras the size of a pill that you can swallow and a computer outside the body records it for the doctor to review. This makes it more appealing to the patients since it is less invasive. Technology in the medical field has come a long way in the past century. We have went from tonics that some Dr. and concocted in his office to being able to perform the major transplants that we can today. 50 years ago people would've never thought that a doctor would be......

New Technology in My Field Research Essay

...Abstract The study of computer forensics has quickly emerged and technology used in theis type of forensics is being developed quite rapidly. As swiftly as the field and its importance are growing, many practitioners still remain unaware of computer forensics and its role in the technological world. A paper provides an overview of the relatively new field of computer forensics. The paper also illustrates why, in the wake of 9-11 and other terrorist acts, the research and development of computer forensics is of international importance. (A) I chose to write my article on computer forensics mainly because I have been involved with computer forensics numerous times in my life. The most recent experience I’ve had with computer forensics was last year. I was informed by my wife that her best friend had received a visit from DHS after their daughters had mentioned that their dad had been touching them and asking them to do things that they were uncomfortable with. DHS determined that they needed to investigate the situation and began to gather the necessary information. During the investigation my wife’s friend had noticed that her husband was starting to be very secretive and was locking up his computer anytime she walked into the room and had been using a 128 bit encrypted flash drive that he never let leave his person. He started being verbally abusive and physically abusive to both her and their 2 young daughters and she locked him out of the house. I......

In the article “Who’s Afraid Of Google Glass?” (Businessweek, 2013) it talks about invading people’s privacy. “One concern is that recording other people will probably get easier.” (Businessweek, 2013) Due to privacy issue a lot of places are banning such devices to be used in their facilities. Such facilities include: bars, casinos, strip clubs and court houses. All data that is being searched, pictures and videos are being generated will be stores on Google’s cloud servers. “Surely hackers will be interested in that too. So will marketers.” (Businessweek, 2013) Google is looking into security not only convenience for people so therefore there will be curtain security and privacy regulations. Google Glass is becoming next step to a new way of living. Technology Is a Positive Influence in the Education Field

...Technology is a Positive Influence in the Education Field Everywhere you look there are computer games, but it just isn’t the fun computer games anymore, they are making more and more learning programs. I have seen learning programs from the preschool level all the way up to the college level. I think this is wonderful it gives children or young adults the chance to practice at home or even before the class the starts, it gives you a little introduction. I have a six year old sister who uses those programs all the time, and they help her. When she was in preschool it helped her count and now the levels are getting harder now that she is in first grade. My family, me especially because I am going into the education field think that these programs are very beneficial, they help the students get a good grasp on things. I think technology has positively impacted the education field. When I see my little sister practice and play on the computer I can tell it is helping her in her school work, but at the same time she is enjoying it. Because it is on the computer it doesn’t feel like she is doing homework or school work, but in her mind she is playing on the computer, for fun. I know for the most part many people use these programs as an introduction to a course or for a certain grade level. This helps the student prepare themselves for the up coming tasks. These computer programs allow students to get their feet wet before they go in for the dive. During my senior......

Positive Impacts That Information Technology Has Had in the Finance and Accounting Fields

...Positive Impacts that Information Technology has had in the Finance and Accounting Fields The role of Information Technology (IT) in today’s world cuts across almost all sectors of the economy and society. In finance and accounting, IT has played a significant role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting and finance activities (Half, 2012). Several IT networks and computer systems have shortened the lead-time necessary for accountants to make and present financial information to firms’ managements and other stakeholders. Moreover, the IT has also improved the overall efficiency of the information provided by the accountants to firms’ management departments. Accurate information by the accountants is crucial for appropriate and relevant decision making by the company. One of the biggest impacts of IT in accounting is the development and use of computerized systems in tracking and recording various financial transactions. Before the innovation of technology and its use in finance and accounting, recording of transactions took long and was never accurate. The paper ledgers, handwritten financial statements, and spreadsheets have been translated into computer systems for quick presentation of individual transactions into easily interpretable financial report (Half, 2012). Improved reporting is necessary for investors in the determination whether a company is an appropriate investment for growth opportunities. It also determines whether it has a potential...

...New Technology in the Field of Networking Systems Administration The field of Networking Systems Administration has many new things happening every year. With the way the development of new technology is, it is very difficult for a lot of none technologically inclined people too keep up most of the time. One of these companies that are always coming up with new technology is called AMD. They are a company that develops processors for many of the leading brands of computers today. Their most recent development is a new processor chip that is supposed to be faster than their leading competitor’s (Sakr, 2014). From what this article says this new Processor chip is called the Kaveri and combines 4 CPU cores and 8 GPU cores “and gives them unheard-of levels of computing independence, such that AMD feels justified in describing them collectively as a dozen ‘compute cores. ’” From the way this article has described this new technology, it is going to make the computer gaming world’s games run faster and better in many different ways. Now many technologically knowledgeable people would be inclined to believe that this is all just marketing nonsense, but according to Sharif Sakr, the Senior European Editor of Engadget.com, says that AMD seems to be being very open with their companies thinking with this new processor (Sakr, 2014). ...In this modern society, everyone always has three things in their pockets or bags; there are wallet, mobile phone and their set of keys. However, this trend of carrying too many things is about come to an end. In fact, a mobile phone could make it possibly. Nowadays mobile phones are not just only can text message or make a call, people can also use it to surf Internet, check emails or as a GPS-device etc. With the endless developing of technology, the possibility of mobile service is expected more and more. Therefore, the Near Field Communication is implemented as one of the latest technologies. NFC (near-field communication) allows two devices placed within a few centimetres of each other to exchange data. In order for this to work, both devices must be equipped with an NFC chip. In the real world, there are essentially two ways this works which are two-way communication and one-way communication. The financial industry has for some time been working on contactless payment and NFC has been identified as a key solution. With NFC implemented in mobile phones the versatile possibilities within payment and access will be unleashed and wallets and keys will truly be only a memory from the past. Instead of using debit-, credit card or cash when completing a purchase and instead of using keys and other kinds of entry cards people will now only use NFC within their mobiles. The goal is simplicity and NFC will be the tool when creating the ultimate one for-All device. The......

A patent is being processed for the monitoring system and it’s now ready for clinical trials, researchers say when commercialized, it could be used as a disposable electronic sensor with many potential applications due to its powerful performance, small size, and low cost. Heart monitoring is one obvious candidate, since the system could gather data on some components of an EKG, such as pulse rate and atrial fibrillation its ability. Its ability to measure EEG brain signals could find use in nursing care for patients with dementia. ‘’current technology allows you to measure these pulse rate and skin responses. Women

...WOMEN Women in the UAE have been encouraged and empowered since the foundation of the state. This policy is spearheaded by the country's leadership and backed by the UAE Constitution, which guarantees equal rights for men and women in accordance with the precepts of Islam. As a result, the role of women in society has evolved considerably over the years. Today, the economic and social benefits of diversity are universally recognised and embraced and women are viewed as partners in achieving sustainable development. In the twenty-first century, Emirati women are well represented in all echelons of society, including the political arena, diplomatic corps, judiciary and the commercial sector. Four women hold ministerial position in the Cabinet and women form 17.5 per cent of the UAE's partially elected representative body, the Federal National Council. Three of the UAE's ambassadors, one consul general and the UAE's representative to the United Nations in New York are women. Four women have been appointed as judges, two as public prosecutors and 17 as assistant public prosecutors and marriage officials. Women also serve in the armed forces, customs and police. Prestigious government entities, such as twofour54 media free zone, Tecom Business Park and Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority, are headed by women. In fact, women constitute 66 per cent of the public sector workforce (the average globally is 48 per cent), with 30 per cent in senior and decision-making positions, close to the...

Technology Trends in Field of Study

...Recent advancements in technology have made big impacts on what is trending in society. Out of all of the trends though only a few stand out to me, Auto Intelligence like “Siri”, Virtual Reality like Oculus, and Global Positioning Satellites. In the field of study I am pursing all three of these would be a huge benefit, but the two I chose to right about are the AI and the Virtual Reality. Virtual Reality like the “Rift” system from the company Oculus is a fast growing market with large companies’ now start to create their own systems. The “Rift” system is currently used for mostly gaming, but I believe that one day in the near future a company with make it useful for a large variety of things. According to Forbes.com even Mark Zuckerberg, chairman of Facebook has said “Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face—just by putting on goggles in your home.” And with that kind of backing you know the technology has very great potential. We will be able to learn better by being immersed in a world where the instructor can teach us by showing use in real time what they want us to see. I mean just think of how awesome that would be as a teach also, taking your students on a “Magic School Bus” like tour of the inside of a computer. So I hope one day the virtual reality makes it way to improve our lives like so many other technologies already have. Everyone know how much...
