Why Can’t I Belong
Belonging such a fickle term, such a horrid and vile word and James hated it. Perhaps it was not the word itself, but more so the weight it carried. He hated the idea of being part of a group of friends and never thought about trying to fit in, as it had never worked. That is why he hated belonging, because he never had, or at least no one had ever let him. Being part of a group was so important James when he was younger, and he had tried many times to make friends with his classmates, but nothing had worked. He tried playing the games they played, listening to the music they listened to, the whole works, but nothing seemed to pan out for him. No matter how hard he tried the would snicker at him, make jokes at his expense, or simply ignore him. It was infuriating and confusing for James, he didn’t understand why no one would accept him. His parents had always told him that if her was himself people would like him, and that there was no point in acting like someone he wasn’t. That was what seemed to bother James though, when he was himself, still no one liked him; and if no one liked him for him, when why should he like himself? All of these thoughts, all of the anger, all of the confusion, it was overwhelming. James felt completely isolated, he felt like he didn’t belong. That word, just part of the cyclical thinking he experienced, and every time that it emerged it tore away another piece of his being. A million times over James had thought about what had caused all of this, and why he just didn’t belong. The only incident that he could remember, or perhaps the first incident that he could remember, was when he was in grade 2. It wasn’t that at this point in time he was an unattractive person, or that he had a large personality flaw, it must have been his sickness. It was a regular day, and James along with the rest of his class and schoolmates…...

Why I?

...Why I love fashion At an early age wool, cotton, linen, and silk have been always a part of me. Not much has changed since that time except for the fact that I have grown to love and appreciate what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion industry. I simply dress to have amusement to my existence. As Bill Cunningham described in his wonderful documentary "Fashion is our suit of armor to survive every day life. It would be like doing away with civilization." I was confused on whether to engage my life to the fashion industry being such a competitive job. I believe that fashion has pushed me out of my comfort zone to try things I never would have imagined I would. What keeps me passionate about the fashion world is the freedom and creative expression one gets. You can express yourself and maybe people will listen or respond. If I see someone with a great pair of shoes on (for example), I may go up to them and tell them and we strike up a conversation and perhaps we become friends. This isn't always the case but it is more likely since you started with a mutual interest. I knew I could start making the world pretty one girl at a time! Fashions is art that we wear every day and live our lives in. Unless you live in a nudist colony, clothes are something that we must wear every day. The beauty of that is that through clothing we have the opportunity to express a part of our personalities and ourselves. I love beautiful and functional design of all types whether it be......

Exhibition Review: I Can't Help the Way I Feel

...“I Can’t Help The Way I Feel” by John Isaacs The exhibition I chose is called “Medicine Now” which is being exhibited in Wellcome Collection. The exhibition is mainly demonstrating views of various artists and scientists about current common topics like obesity, genetics and how they describe the defects uniquely either with scientific explanations using video installations or creating huge objects and relating them to more abstract terms such as emotions and feelings. I think the most interesting piece in the entire exhibition was the one John Isaacs did, “I Can’t Help The Way I Feel”. The object is made from wax, polystyrene, steel and expanding foam, which are all covered in oil painting. The shape is to be considered as a human body with no head and arms but a fat giant torso, fat belly parts, and some parts that I can’t name which are coming out of the body in huge proportions. The size of the structure is enormous so that is the first thing you notice when you enter the room. The basic thing that comes up to mind is that this object is about obesity, and it is also referring to malaria. There are some defected skin areas on the back of the structure and also on the legs. If the object was just about obesity and malaria, I think it would be too obvious. But as I expected, the idea of all the sagging parts reflects also an abstract meaning. Isaacs wanted to describe how life sometimes feels so overwhelming. I think, he wanted to show what is also going on inside......

Why Can’t Malaysia Be a Major Consumer of Biofuel?

...RESEARCH QUESTION: WHY CAN’T MALAYSIA BE A MAJOR CONSUMER OF BIOFUEL? I Introduction While demand in the growing biofuels industry, Malaysia can’t be a major consumer of biofuels as there are some issues in the social impact, ecosystem services, technical consideration for the use of biofuel-based and Malaysia Government Policy sector II Body A One of the reasons Malaysia can’t be a major consumer is the issue in social impact. 1 Competition between food and fuel a Some commodities like maize, sugar cane and vegetable oil can be used either as food or biofuels sources.(Wikipedia,2012) b Human food chain can be affected due to this competition.(Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule,2008) 2 Food price increase a Food prices will increase due to higher demand for biofuels usage.(Doornbosh and Steenblik, 2007) b Higher cost of raws material compared to fossil fuels (Steven and Lee, 2010, p.948) 3 Lack of public awareness about the use of biofuels a Most Malaysian do not realize that Malaysia will run out of oil in 19 years if alternative energy sources such as biofuels are not used. (Prime Minister’s Department,2005,p.22) b Dissemination of information about the benefits of using biofuels is less widespread in the media causing fewer people to take note of the biofuel industry. Why I Write

...“Why I write/Difficult reading" Writing. One word, unlimited stories, tales, memories and also; stress. I struggle with both a mental and medical disability. This makes it so much more difficult to do everyday activities let alone something that takes long-term commitment and focus. I struggle very much when it comes to writing, reading and pretty much anything that has to do with concentration. When doing an assignment for class, for example; homework, my severe anxiety kicks in (although I suffer from it 24-7 it hit’s the ceiling when stress is involved.). I have to not only understand the work that has to be done I then have to read, re-read, look up, ask questions, attempt to understand, and re-read as I go to try to answer any questions I later have. I never knew about this column setup before and truthfully I am shocked to find that it does actually help. When reading I used to highlight, underline, keep notes or truthfully skip over words or sentences I couldn't comprehend or just couldn't pronounce. I was very lazy in my younger school years and pretended like certain words, definitions, or sentences were not important and could be skipped or omitted from the readings I was working on. I later found out that I was wrong and it was my downfall in certain assignments. I also struggle from a learning disability that I just recently found out about which also makes it frustrating when it takes hours to do an assignment that takes others minutes......

Why I Agree with Plato and Why

...After doing research on Plato, ive come to find many people disagree with him. Plato is a rationalist, He says that sense experience fails to provide us with any guarantee that what we experience is, in fact, true. Plato's simile of the sun, image of the divided line, and allegory of the cave are intended to clarify exactly how the things we experience in the sensible, ordinary world are less real than the ideal models on which they rely for their existence. One of his theories I particualry agree with is knowledge. Plato was convinced that ethical conduct must be founded on knowledge, and that knowledge must be knowledge of eternal values which are not subject to the shifting and changing impressions of senses or of subjective opinion, but are the same for all men and for all peoples of all ages. It is this ignorance of how we establish our reality that Plato attempted to expose with his complex theory of knowledge. Plato developed a system of levels in which he explained the steps through which a human evolves as wisdom replaces ignorance. Plato described how the human mind achieves knowledge, and indicated what knowledge consists of by means of his allegory of the Cave, his metaphor of the Divided Line, and his doctrine of Forms or Ideas. In one of Platos books in the Republic, he illustrates a “Cave”. Plato asks us to imagine an underground cave, which has an opening towards the light. In this cave are living human beings, with their legs and necks......

A Group I Belong to

...A Group I Belong To Life is full of diverse and completely unique individuals, but all of these individuals find themselves failing into a group. These groups are basically conglomerates of people that may, or may not, know each other but they all do share an activity or social aspect in common. In my case I am an avid golfer and I fall into a large social and sport driven group. My group is close to 61 million strong and still steadily growing. Golf is extremely important to me and is what I like to do when I have free time. This game is truly maddening, but fulfilling at the same time. I have put thousands of hours into my game over the years and sometimes I see remarkable results, and other times the ball just won’t fly straight, but that’s why I love it. Golf is definitely for the upmost tedious people, this game is made up of inches that can glorify you and/or demoralize you. I have been playing golf for 6 years now and have become quite good at it and it now holds a special place in my life. I have met many of my friends through golf and I can guarantee that all of these people will be in my life forever. I know that many people are in given social, racial, religious, or economic groups, but their group doesn’t make their lives better or more fulfilling; that is why I love my group it is unique and it makes my life better. Society sees golfers as rich, stuck up, and rather egotistical people; this may be completely incorrect but that is what I gather from the......

I Belong to God's Family

...June 9, 2013 Text: Romans 12:3- 8 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. TOPIC: I belong to God's family INTRODUCTION: As we celebrate our 5th Anniversary, the church is going through with many things. In spite of all those things we choose to have this theme for the whole year! I BELONG! We hope and pray that all of us will be part of this wonderful event and by God's grace everyone who will come here and visit our church will not just be a visitor but they will be part of the family, not just a part but be a member of the family, because they feel that they belong. Why I Am in College

...attending College? Ever since I have been attending college all I hear is all my professors ask, why we are attending college? I have thought about it really well. At first I was attending college to please my parents. Then I had a baby and as she is growing and time passes by I see that economically everything is going up. In reality I know why I am attending college. I am in college to improve my economic status, be an example for my children, and to achieve my life goal of being a petroleum engineer. As I was growing up, I seen my parents struggle in paying bills. At times we would have our light cut off and be running extension wires from our neighbor home to ours in order to manage, until we had the money for the bill. I also recall asking for things and my mother saying, Sorry sweaty we don’t have enough or we can’t afford it. Now that I am a father myself, I don’t want my children to feel the burden I felt just because my parents weren’t financially stable. Don’t get me wrong I had a wonderful child hood but there were moments that I wish I could have a certain object. I just would like to provide for my children and still have a little extra in my pocket just in case of any financial instability or purpose. The second reason I am attending college is to be a great example for my children. Neither my father nor mother attended College or graduated for High school. So far I am the only one who has graduated from high school and I want to be able to graduate......

Where I Stand and Why

...Assignment 4 – Where I Stand and Why There are different attitudes and opinions to assimilation. In the text “Where I stand and Why” by LaToya Powel, some different attitudes to assimilation are expressed. The text is about LaToya and her family’s assimilation in New York City. She’s interviewing her grandfather who migrated to New York City from Lumberton, North Carolina, in 1957 to get a job and a better life for his family. Her grandfather, Franklin Powell, and his wife Shirley Ruth Powell assimilated because they were forced to it. All the work was in white America, and if they wanted a job they needed to adapt the culture. The only concern in his life was to work so he could get a better life for his family, and he didn’t think about the forced assimilation. He gave his children everything that the white people had so it would be easier for them to fit in because it meant a lot to him. English was also very important to him, and he got mad when his family didn’t speak correctly because to have a conversation with corporate white people would be the survival in this world. LaToya has another point of view on assimilation. She is against it, and she doesn’t think that anyone should conform others culture. Everybody has their own identity, and nobody should be forced to change themselves. She wants to retain who she is. The white society has a huge influence on the way African Americans are living. African Americans don’t have the same rights as the white. By way......

Why Can't We Be Good?

...PHI 106 Assignment #1 Why Can’t We Be Good? “Our society simply has no generally acceptable solution to the ethical dilemma of abortion. So here is a test for us. This is ethnics. We are in front of a painful and Momentous question of right and wrong. How shall we try to think - to think, and not just wrangle - about it?”(“Why Can’t We Be Good?”, pg.63) I believe that everyone has an opinion about a certain situation whether it’d be right or wrong. Giving an opinion about a certain subject brings out the emotions that a person feels. Morality is another word for someone’s opinion about what is right or wrong and it goes back to what a person feels. For instance, many people discuss abortion and whether the solution harms the fetus or not, no one is sure. My opinion about abortion is that it is a form of murdering and lessens the value of human life and can cause long term damage to women or health risk. People who are pro-life consider abortions to be inhumane and believe they should be outlawed. As, viewed by people who categorize themselves as pro-life, it is seen as the murder of an innocent life. Plus, abortion lessens the chance for adoption if the child is born and sadly women that choose abortion usually do not have the financial resources to support the child. There are also, other safer forms of birth control. But I also, believe that in any situation if a woman is raped or abused, she should have the rights to do an abortion is that is the......

01.03 Why Can’t I Have It All

... 01.03 Why Can’t I Have It All Why should I study for my upcoming Medical Terminology Test? Costs | Benefits | Sleep time is less (short-term) | Better GPA (long-term) | Less usage of my electronics (short-term) | Be more focused on this test and other to come (long-term) | Less time spent with friends (short-term) | Learned something that will better my future career in the medical field. (long-term) | 1.Explain how the concepts of scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost relate to your dilemma. ◘ Having the drive to want to study is what will take you far. As we all know time is a scarce resource. We want more, but have to do it a limited TIME frame, and scarcity is just that, limited resources. This forces us to make choices, choices that we might not want to make, but have to. Opportunity cost is the most valued alternative, meaning giving up something you want to do but can’t really do. In my case that would be studying instead of pointless time wasting on things that could be dealt with later on in the week. It’s better to chose a goal that will really benefit you in the long run. 2. When making a decision, are the costs and benefits equally important to you? Why or why not. Based on your chart, explain which category, costs or benefits, would have the largest impact on your decision? ◘ When making a decision I would say that the cost and benefits are not equally important. Why not, because I feel the......

Why Can't I Divide by Zero?

...Why can’t I divide by zero? The explanation of why we cannot divide any number by zero is really easy. The three links contain different explanations, but eventually, they all come down to one. To begin, it is said that we students are told that a division by zero is undefined. And this, supposedly is not entirely true, but somewhat true, they tell us this because they, and we eventually cannot define an answer that would work. But in the other hand, if we are told that a division by zero equals to infinity, then that is entirely NOT true. Why? Because as the contents say, infinity is not a number, it is simply like a concept let’s say, because if it would be a number, there would be many contradictions, like the “collision” of our whole number system. So, as mathematician Mahavira (9th century A.D.) said “A number remains unchanged when divided by zero.”, we can get to the simple and easy conclusion that a number cannot be divided by zero simply because, if you multiply that number by zero, the answer will ALWAYS be zero. Now, in the case of 0/0=0, we may say that that is true because 0x0=0, and that may lead to us thinking or realizing that dividing by zero can give you a real number, but this is wrong. We must not confuse, as I said above, any number times zero will equal zero, so therefore the answer to 0/0 can be any number. And also, we must not forget that any number divided by that same number, will equal to one (1/1=1, 2/2=1,3/3=1..), so in that case of......
