What are you listening to?
Have you ever felt like you can not concentrate on something that you are working on and as soon as your favorite band comes on MTV or radio station, everything just flows? Or have you been to a party without music? It is guaranteed that people will hardly interact with each other until some sort of music is turned on. It’s like an invitation for people not to feel awkward anymore.
Music is one powerful element that greatly influences people, mindsets and culture. Think about it, music is so important that in sport competitions, players do not step on the stage taking the microphone announcing how proud they are to be representing their country. They could do that, or just simply sing their national anthem in a very passionate way to bring the entire crowd of supporters to tears. That is how powerful music is.
An ancient philosopher called Socrates once said, “Let me control the music of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.” He knew how important music influences culture. He also knew how music can shape and impact others for either to bring about good or bad. For instance, polls done in the United States amongst american teenagers about definition of what the word success is, did not go much further than just having many cars, a mansion and lots of girls. This is due to the media feeding them this everyday in their music videos, resulting into poor understanding of what living successfully really means.
You may say that you only listen to a certain kind of music as your personal pastime or to “pump” you up, but is it really helping you grow? What happened to the music in which it’s lyrics are full of poetry and that in every stanza sang is filled with sentiments that one can relate to? Where is the quality music gone or has music industry just become interested in quick cash? Or is this just a reflection of how superficial society is nowadays? These are questions to be considered. As an example of how degrading we are moving towards is the lyrics of a popular song that was over played in radio stations throughout the entire world: “Welcome to the candy shop, i’ll let you lick the lollipop. Go ahead girl don’t cha stop, keep going till’ you hit the spot...” Certainly the rapper was not a portraying to be a candy retailer, but was rather planting the idea that goes beyond the actually lollipop candy.
In the other hand, many names comes to our minds when we talk about quality in music and they do gives us this nostalgic feeling. Legendary names such as: The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Hendrix, Frank & Nancy Sinatra, Michael Jackson, etc will be greatly missed. They not only made a difference in their time of fame but still are remembered as pioneers and are still loved by so many today.
Who is responsible for this? You are! You are responsible for what you listen to, you are responsible to what your children are listening to in their smartphones or mp3s. Just as eating too much fast food is not good for ones health, in music we should also make diet for it. I remember when I was first taken to a concert of classical music, it was something from another world at first, as time went by I started noticing that I do enjoy classical music and now I appreciate it and encourage some of my music partners to listen to classical music every once in awhile. We do not need to love it, but we need to appreciate what has been around us for so long, like the classical pieces.
Once someone defined to me that music is an attempt to express the mystery of man, deeper than what you are feeling, deeper than what you are thinking, it is what your heart is full of put into words. The old saying: “You are what you eat” could also be well fit as “you are what you listen to”.…...

You Are What You Buy

...When purchasing a product there is a number of factors that influence a consumers decision on what product or service they purchase. Two of these factors is the actual self-concept and ideal self-concept. The actual self-concept is defined as the individuals belief about himself, which includes the person’s attributes and how they evaluate themselves. The ideal self-concept is how you would like to see yourself. When consumers purchase products they are often purchasing the product to enhance how they feel about themselves as well as get closer to their ideal self. My most recent important purchase was a car in September. I purchased a 2012 GMC Terrain with some special features. The GMC is a mid size SUV that is known to have one of best gas mileage for its type. My choice of an SUV was mainly based on the fact that I like bigger cars because I travel a lot with large items (bowling balls) and I like to sit up higher in a car so I can see everything. Most of the time, SUV drivers are described as people who like to feel in control, which is a lot of the times what I like to do. I often take control of situations because that it is personality. The purchase of a newer also indicates that I want to have a sense of pride and a feeling of accomplishment because I purchased a brand new car. This explanation would be an example of how I tried to enhance my ideal self-concept of being someone who looks accomplished. I also chose the vehicle based on needs. My old car......

What Is Listening?

...What is listening? Or rather what is considered listening? According to the International Listening Association, listening is defined as “the process of receiving, constructing meaning form, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages” (DeVito, 2012). The actual definition for listening is defined as “to give ear to” (Merriam-Webster, 2013), and that’s the very true essence of listening; to give ear to, to hear with thoughtful attention, to pay attention. Managers in the workplace are well known for having a reputation of not being great listeners. Whether it’s from lack of caring or just too many things clouding one’s mind, the overall problem lies with the lack of attention. Not all managers are bad, many can actually listen and give thoughtful responses, but the ratio of which ones listen and which do not is usually in the favor of those who do not. When there is more than one manager overseeing a group of employees, conflict arises, but not solely out of pride or who’s higher on the social ladder. Many conflicts arise because they simply do not listen. There are five different types of listening styles; empathetic/objective listening, nonjudgmental/critical listening, surface/depth listening, polite/impolite listening, and active/inactive listening (DeVito, 2012). Each manager has to learn and master these five types of listening or several barriers are placed between them and the employee. A company then has to listen. If employees conclude that a manager is......

...of corporate wellness and employee-assistance programs. "So you should eat like an athlete." At the very least, that means lots of lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and complex carbohydrates; no processed foods; and minimal white flour and sugar. But when you spend all day confronting challenging mental tasks, the brain's nutritional demands are greater. For example, have you ever worked so hard that it felt as though your brain were on fire? It sort of was, says Patti Milligan, director of nutrition at Tignum, a consultancy that helps businesses boost employee performance through holistic wellness programs. "You produce lots of oxidants in the brain when you're working," she says. "Foods that are high in antioxidants--berries, beans, apples, tea--act like flame retardants." And don't forget water. "The brain is 70 to 80 percent water," Milligan says. "When it's metabolically active 10 to 12 hours a day, removing metabolic waste from the brain requires optimal hydration." She suggests "super-hydrating" with two cups at the beginning of the day and avoiding "dehydrators," like processed sugary foods, high doses of caffeine, and soda. And watch out for "brain fog," which can be evidence that you need to hydrate. Speaking of caffeine, "coffee depletes serotonin, which contributes to a sense of well-being," says Barbara Mendez, a New York City nutrition consultant who works with many business clients. "If you have it on an empty stomach, that quick delivery to the......

You Are What You Eat

...You Are What You Eat Linand Blanc Professor Pamella Robinson Principles of Sociology 7/30/2011   Abstract Some may think that carrots and brown rice are healthy eating habits here in the United States. However there are some places in the world including the US where toasted insects, roasted cat and dogs, and even raw monkey brains are a delicacy. Whether you yourself would eat these types of food or not, we know that humans have been consuming cats dogs and yes even monkeys for decades. But my question is why did they find the need to eat these types of meats? Were beef, chicken, fish and pork not enough? Or maybe we’re the ones who don’t know what delicacy eating really is. Maybe we shouldn’t have such a closed mind to eating cats and dogs. Maybe by the end of this week I will be one that becomes an Entomophily.   The Holy Bible goes into great details on what we can and cannot eat. The dietary laws prohibit eating pork, shrimp, and shellfish of any kind, most insects, scavenger birds, and various types of other animals. (Leviticus chapter 11) Although the Bible doesn’t say anything about the domestic animals such as cats and dogs but many religions consider the consumption of these animals to be taboo. In some parts of the word others have resorted to eating felines and k-9’s in desperation during hard times and poverty, and others believe that eating them will bring good luck or good health. Cats and Dogs In North China eating cats is......

You Are What You Eat

...You are what you eat! Often when we pass McDonald’s in the city, we see that all the seats are taken. The visitors cram their mouths with cola and burger, and we can’t be sure that these often swollen people do exercise. Yes, we are all aware of the fact that our society today suffers from the so-called obesity epidemic. You are what you eat. But if you eat too much obesity can have many serious consequences such as heart disease, diabetes and difficulties with walking. But we can look at obesity as a result of social inheritance, where poor people often buy cheap unhealthy food. On the other hand you can also be genetically disposed for obesity. Studies show that being physically active, the risk of obesity is significantly less. If these poor people begin doing exercise, then they will be healthier. To be with other people and do sport instead of being indoors close to the fridge might save you from being obese. The cause of obesity can also be that a big part of the population suffers from food illiteracy. Some people think that they can eat whatever – but that might result in obesity. It’s important that the population get taught about healthy food. But do we not live in a society where everyone should be able to distinguish between healthy and wholesome, wrong and correct? We are and will be informed almost every day about what is healthy and unhealthy, but perhaps it is something you should be taught in school. You need to get control of yourself, because it is......

...Am Not Fat! Magazines at the grocery store, commercials on TV and movies playing at local theaters, all of these forms of entertainment seem to be harmless outlets of creativity. Yet these very forms of media affect women all over the world and tell them what they should physically look like to be deemed as beautiful in society. One may not believe that the media is up to such a terrible act, but subconsciously women believe what the media portrays as beautiful. Today’s pop culture demonstrates the impact of self-image and the effect it has on society and the way the society should look. Ads and pop culture enforce a negative outlook on the body image, which affects young women throughout the society. There are many aspects of today’s society that effect women within this pop culture and the way they have started to look at their bodies and see themselves as below average because they are not measuring up to the standards of society. In all reality, media and advertisement must know the effects it has on the young women and their body image in the world, but choose to ignore the fact because of the success that has sky rocketed in the past years. ...ENGL 111-A Essay 5 – Persuasion You Are What You Eat Did you know that there are twenty-one ingredients in that box of macaroni and cheese you are feeding your children? What is sodium tripolyphosphate? Can you pronounce it? Think about it, do you really know what you are feeding your children every day? Unfortunately, most of us do not. We all want to feed our families wholesome, nutritious meals, but in today’s busy world it seems almost impossible. Our grocery stores shelves are filled with food that is full of chemicals, pesticides, and refined sugars, but do not have much nutritional value. As a society we have got to start making smarter food choices. Obesity and diabetes have become an epidemic in this country due to the lack of proper nutrition. As working mothers, we have to get food on the table fast. Often, we have very little money to do it with so we buy what we can afford. This often means we end up feeding our family packaged and processed foods. Our children and our families are seeing the consequences of this in their health and weight. We need to stop thinking that it is too hard and too expensive to eat well, and get creative and persistent with teaching our children health eating habits while they are young. One half of school age children who are currently obese will still be obese when they become adults. (Serdula M. K.) Today, one out of every three Americans is considered to be obese. You Are What You Eat

...You are what you eat Strayer University Author Note Abstract As a child when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up the first thing that I would say was, ‘a biologist’ not because it was the only big word that I knew at 8 years old it was because I knew that biologist got to study the very thing that I loved. ‘Life’ and ‘nature’. You are what you eat Imagine if you became the very thing that you ate. If your cells mutated into the cells of the very thing that you consumed. I would say that there would be a lot half-human half-beast walking around, if not already. THE SEA SLUG THAT BECAME A PLANT In a recent article published Sidney K. Pierce she shows her findings of how the emerald green sea slug lives months at a time by feeding on the sunlight, similar to a plant, (Photosynthesis) the article clarifies how the sea slug (Elysia chlorotica) absorbs the genes of the algae (Vaucheria litorea) that it eats, thus turning the slug into the very algae that it eats. The slug (Elysia chlorotica) manages to live for months by utilizing photosynthesis. To do this the slug stores the chloroplasts from the algae that it feeds on and by doing so, initiates a gene transfer; from one multicellular species to another. A new find for scientist. If not amazing enough that the slug can steal and store the chloroplast from the food that it eats it even goes as far as boosting the usefulness of the chloroplast 10 times longer than the algae that it adsorbed it from could......

Are You Listening to Me?

...Are You Listening to Me? Jennifer Ailey English 1 November 4th 2008 Ailey 1 In Deborah Tannen’s Book “You Just Don’t Understand” she discusses the many differences and problems men and women have with getting their point across in conversations to each other. In this essay I’ve chosen three aspects that she mentions in the book that I will discuss in detail. The first difference I want to point out is the concept of framing or symbolic gestures thought chivalrous, which is really allowing the one performing them the control. Asking for information is another major difference between men and women. Whereas women see it as a means to an end men see it as a sign of inferior knowledge and position. The final point I will be going over is problem solving, something men and women are rarely eye-to-eye on. Men will not give up until they can figure something out, whereas women know when to concede. When it comes to performing symbolic or chivalrous actions women hardly think into the real meaning behind the action. For a woman to take an offered open door she may think herself being treated to what is considered chivalrous, whereas in reality she’s allowing the man the power to allow her passage and she therefore takes a subordinate position to him. Though to some women taking the offered open door is a sign of weakness and lack of independence in not being able to open a door on her own. ......

You Are What You Think

...You are what you think The truth about life is the truth about ourselves. If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. In life, we go through many battles, not necessarily the real ones, but the battles with our own problems and others around us. Here we will see a little how to have strength, know ourselves better and then apply the knowledge to life. It is really important to know ourselves, to know how we will react to the challenges we face, and to have a good image of ourselves, since we are what we think. First, it is important that we have a good example to look up to and learn with. We will talk about heroes as they are a good example. A hero is a person who does something special, or out of the ordinary in order to help others. It could also be someone who is admired for a characteristic about them, be it physical or mental. They are individuals that normal everyday people can look up to. This being the case, a superhero is nothing more than someone who helps many people. We have always looked up to our heroes. Some of us become heroes and that is thanks to the strength we take from them. They are great examples for kids and grownups. The humanity should keep taking the good things heroes have to share with us, and apply them in our lives. Second, “Having control of yourself”, is very important. Then we know how to control ourselves, our fears, and our excitement. We shouldn’t be blocked from doing something...

...You Are What You Eat Ever wonder why organic food prices are higher than non-organic produce? For example, when shoppers go into the produce section of the store they see two parts, organic produce and non-organic. Non-organic strawberries are cheaper than organic strawberries. Why would the price differ if they are both the same strawberries? They may taste the same, but the non- organic strawberry have pesticide residue on it. Eating organic food is healthier than non-organic food, because organic food does not contain harmful pesticides, have a higher nutrient content, and does not contain genetically modified organism. Organic is referred to the way farmers grow and process their products. Organic food is better for the environment. Organic growers conserve energy by decreasing the use of fossil fuel. By organic farmers doing this, it helps to minimize the environment pollution. Farmers on an organically farm do not use harmful pesticides to grow their food. A pesticide is a substance used for destroying insects or organism harmful to discriminating animals and plants. Organic farmers use safer methods to protect their crops. Even with washing off conventional produce there is still residue left on the food. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, pesticides......

Can you say the same? Maybe not, maybe yes. Either way it goes let's imagine it can together. I remember the first time I tried my grandmother's Rice pudding. The memory is still fresh on my mind. The rice was sticky and creamy, raisins were ripe and perky, and the smell of the cinnamon indulged my senses, with each and every waking bite the pudding did a tantalizing salsa dance on my tongue that I will never forget. The very next day I asked my grandma can she teach me how to make her rice pudding, at first she was reluctant but eventually she gave in. The most important lesson that my grandma taught me, was in order to make this pudding successful, the rice had to be just right (no Uncle Ben's) this was drilled in my head over a dozen one times, no excuses. "Today as I stand over a bowl of cold water and rice, scrubbing, (Dash, 140) I felt a strong presence watching over me just like Dash felt when her Aunt Gertie was watching over her. So if I was to make a mistake today it better be on an ingredient and not the rice. Are You Really Listening

...Are You Really Listening? : The term close personal relationship refers to lovers, marriage partners, best friends, and people that we work close together with. These are people who we spend much of our time with, do things together, and often share living and working quarters with. When in a close personal relationship we usually share personal information and feelings. I believe that the article is right when it said “People commonly believe that they communicate better with close friends than with strangers” (HealthDay News, 2011). I would have believed this statement because I assume that my close friends and family know more about me so I would have guessed that I would have better communication with close friends and family. Communication can be viewed as how people exchange feelings and meanings as they try to understand one another and come to see problems and differences from the other person’s point of view, or as the textbook states communication is” the process by which ideas or information are shared among people” (Sole, 2011). Of course there are times when I have miscommunication with my boyfriend because I assumed that he knew me well enough to just understand what I meant. We have been together for twenty-three years so I just assumed he knew me well enough to know what I mean when I am speaking to him. I told him that I needed help around the house, meaning that I needed for him and the kids to help out more with the up keep of the house. Well for my......
