Outline
Thesis Forcing students to volunteer teaches them to be overall better people.
Controlling Ideas
1. Communication skills.
2. Teaches the student responsibility.
3. It can build character: raise self-esteem and personal development.
Body paragraph:
Volunteering for a high school student can be stressful at times. It can also do a lot of good though, by using up some free time high school students seem to have. High school students getting pregnant and in trouble with the law are outstanding compared to those on the honour roll. By getting the student to communicate with more people broadens their horizons. Having them see there is more in this giant world then just the name brand pants they have on, and the accomplishment of working hard to be able to buy the nice things in life. Having students volunteer teaches them the responsibility of the real world. They have a duty to fulfill, accountability, and people now depend on them. If something came up like a test they may need to study, they need to call the boss to plan for someone else to take their shift. The student may have the responsibility to open or close the store for daily operations, to follow the daily cleaning instructions or maybe just stock shelves. If these responsibilities are not met by the student, they may be fired. This too is also part of the learning process. When the student takes on the responsibility of volunteering this will help build character in the student, attribute to personal growth, raise their self-esteem and learn practical skills. This may also be the students the first real experience in the working sector of the real world. In an article in Macleans.ca…...

Does School Uniforms Make Schools Better?

...Does School Uniforms Make School Better? Do school uniforms really make schools better? I say NO! Only because I, myself, went to a school that had to wear uniforms. While there are advantages of school uniforms, there are also some disadvantages. Depending on the requirements, school uniforms can be expensive to buy for parents. There are also arguments that wearing uniforms hides the child’s personality and therefore they cannot express themselves in their own way. The staff thinks it would be best for their students to wear uniforms and that the schools would be better disciplined but, what they failed to realize is that it was the uniforms getting us into trouble. Students would get sent out of class multiple times for dress code violations, then sent to ISS, then a campus level hearing for a possible referral to a district level hearing and then eventually your sent to alternative, because you didn’t have your shirt tucked in, or your pants were rolled up, but you know maybe all that happened because your mom bought your school clothes over the summer and you just so happen to GROW. Your shirt was un-tucked because it was to short and your pants were rolled up because you didn’t want to have high waters. According the article titled Advantages of School Uniforms on the-ibenefits.com website, “Many times, kids are ridiculed because of the clothes they wear, and it seems that no matter how hard parents try, kids know who is poor in the school. One of the advantages of......

Conflict Changes People for the Better

...CHANGES PEOPLE FOR THE BETTER Conflicts can be well known, or hidden from society, can be huge historical occurrences, or can be small and unseen. No matter the scale of the conflicts that occur in our world, people, whether directly involved or not, are always changed for the better. A famous example of how conflict changed people occurred in World War Two, where the Japanese soldiers captured many women and children from Singapore. This historical happening of the Second World War has been captured through the art of film by Bruce Beresford. The film, ‘Paradise Road’ told the historical story of these women, whose growth through experiences of conflict changed them for the better. Another famous example comes from the life of Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop. This great Australian man, put others before himself, something he may not have done when living in Australia, shows how the conflicts he found himself in changed him. Oprah Winfrey, a great African-American woman may seem like a woman who has it all, but what many do not realise, her early life lead saw many hardships in which she needed to overcome in order to be where she is today. No matter the situation, these historical men and women all needed conflict to change for the better. The film ‘Paradise Road’ is the perfect example of how conflict enables one to grow through their experiences. The women (who were taken to the camp) started off as important members of society, coming for highly esteemed classes of people,......

The People Deserve Better

...The Manila railway system is one of the important means of travel in a Manilenyo’s everyday life. The Metro Railway Transit serves some 684,000 people every day, and the Light Rail Transit serves about 579,000 people every day according to the Department of Transport and Communications. The government therefore has to consider the lives of over one million commuters in the operation, and maintenance of the railway systems in Manila. The government is running the railway systems well as they are now, but is it enough? Singapore also has its own railway system and is very systematic and organized in managing the railways. We can learn a lot from them and apply what we learn to improve the safety and experience of the daily commuters of the bustling Manila. Railway transport plays a great role in the lives of busy on the go people. It serves as a detour to avoid traffic jams during peak hours of the day, allowing commuters to pass above or under the dense traffic on the main roads. Manila railways consist of the Metropolitan railway Transit and the Light Railway Transit. These modes of transport serve as one of the most cost and time efficient ways of transportation of everyday commuters. Since Manila has become filled to the brim throughout the years, people rely a lot on the railways, especially students and the working population who have to travel quite a distance every day and try their best to avoid being late and in the evening try to get home in time for dinner. The......

Alternative Schools Are a Better Choice for Students

...Alternative Schools are a Better Choice for Students Christy Price AIU Online Alternative Schools are a Better Choice for Students What are alternative schools? Alternative schools according to the World Book Encyclopedia (2003) are, “… any public or private school that differs from traditional schools in curriculum, purpose, or teaching methods.” The definition comes from the 1960’s when free schools were created and contained smaller groups of students and teachers. During this time the general consensus was, kids would learn at their own pace and teachers were not meant to be viewed as authority figures but should be mentors to the students under their care. In comparison to public schools, which were seen as oppressive, free schools were a suitable alternative for many students (Miller 2002) For some students alternative high schools are the better choice for their education. Students who attend alternative schools do not lack the ability to learn they just have different learning needs than other students. According to the Waterville Alternative School (2003), located in Waterville Maine, public schools are created on a “one size fits all” basis. That is, there is one set curriculum, schedule, and teaching style. Each student is expected to learn at the same pace; however, this is not the reality. Thus, alternative schools have been created as a way to meet each student’s individual needs. Alternative schools are appealing to some students for a number of......

Do Cfo's Make Better Ceo's?

...Do CFO's make better CEO'S? Introduction The CFO possesses many significant advantages as well as disadvantages if he/she is chosen to become the CEO. Recently an increasing number of company boards have decided that in order to best serve shareholders it is prudent to promote the CFO to CEO. CFOs themselves remain reticent about any personal ambitions beyond the CFO role - at least in public. But given this recent string of high profile promotions there is an increasing recognition that they have what it takes to take over the CEO role. To understand why CFOs are more frequently getting the top job it is important to know what the contemporary holder of the post does with his time. Article entitled “CFO to CEO” explains that the Monty Python image of an accountant sitting in a corner counting beans has disappeared, says Ian Graves, district director of continental Europe, at recruitment agency Robert Half International. Bluntly put, CFOs are now a much more exciting breed. In the 1990s, the CFO role became more dynamic and strategic, moving from being merely a functional head to also being a corporate leader (“CFO to CEO”, 2005). CEOs can benefit greatly from a CFO background. They will have a well grounded idea of how the financial laws affect the company as well as how official documents are created and how they are submitted. In short, the CEO with this background will be another possible safety net and another eye looking for deceit in the lower ranks. There are...

The Characteristics That Makes a Good Student

...Characteristics that make a good student. Whether or not, yet you think it is important to be a good student. The things that you have done or will do to become a good student. What are you willing to sacrafice to be a good student. In life as I went through the education system, I realized that there were three kinds of students. There were the good students, the average students and the bad students. Many people strive to be in the category of the good student, many settle for the category of the average student and some just don’t care so they end up being placed in the category of the bad student. I find that the most important of those categories is the category of the good student. I feel this way because the good student usually accomplish a lot in life and they are usually the successful ones. The average students do what they do, slide by under the radar, and the bad students don’t care, so the just relax for the rest of their lives. I constantly strive to be a good student. Many people have asked me what are the characteristics of a good student, whether I think being a good student is important or not, the things I have done or will do to become a good student, and what will I sacrafice to become a good student. For a while I was puzzled as to what are the characteristics of a good student, but as I sat back, I realized that I was a good student, and that every student has there own mode of operation. What Makes People Effective?

...What Makes People Effective? This chapter, contributed by Edward E. Lawler, outlines the processes and ideas by which an organization can create a virtuous spiral –a symbiosis between individual employees and their organization to work towards achieving everyone’s goals. People in an organization perform well when they are properly motivated. The organization needs to know what motivates its people to be responsible, and willing to provide, the components it needs to succeed. The capabilities and the competencies of an organization are determined by the caliber of its employees. In order to succeed, and organization must obligate themselves to acquire the best and most capable people, and keep them satisfied in their working environment. How do we determine whether a person is able to perform at their highest potential? We need to know what motivates them. Each person has their own values and sources of motivation. There are a lot of speculations that have been made to explain why people make the choices they do in work, and what they would interpret as an ideal reward. FACTORS THAT AFFECT MOTIVATION The first concept explored is the causes of performance. Lawler uses the equation: PERFORMANCE = MOTIVATION x ABILITY It is a simple equation that states that that performance relies on two factors. Workers who are motivated don’t always have the skills to produce great results, and those who are highly skilled won’t produce results without motivation. Psychologists have an......

Tradeoffs, opportunity cost, margins, and incentives are the four principles of individual decision making process. The following paragraphs each of the four principles of the decision-making process. This paper also explains how the principles of economics affect decision-making, interaction, and the economy. Organizational Trends The four principles of decision-making are tradeoffs, opportunity costs, margins, and incentives. A tradeoff is the sacrificing of an item to gain something of greater value to an individual. What Makes a Good Student

...What makes a good student? Personally, I am a very visual learner, so I take my own notes and color them with pens and highlighters to draw more attention and make it easier to recall them. Talking out loud when studying is another strategy that I find to be very effective when studying. There is no simple answer when it comes to the question of what makes good student. It’s widely known that everyone learns differently, and some people are more tuned to one way of learning over another. All that being said, it’s a little bit ironic that even though we learn and absorb material differently, we are still tested by the same means. I’ve given this question a lot of thought and while I think more and more about it, I find my answer to have changed a lot from my initial response. Yes you can easily list ten things off the top of your mind that make a “good” student, like: attentiveness, attendance, respect, doing what is asked (homework), being interactive, coming prepared, and being on top of your time management etc--- but I find that it really depends on what your definition of a good student is in the first place. Obviously most people think that a “good” student is one that receives high grades; but on the contrary, I think what makes a good student is someone passionate and who carries the will to learn and educate them self. I personally hate school, but love education. I believe that our education system is very flawed. The way our system is set up now is......

What Makes People Happy

...1. Give an outline of what makes people happy and what does not, as expressed in the three texts. Has our pursuit and fascination for the healthy thin body types turned real healthy bodies into a disease? In the article “Can you be fat and healthy” by David Jacobs, Professor of epidemiology tells us that even fat people can be healthy. He says that According to data from the nonprofit Cooper Institute in Dallas. Being overweight and very active physically is healthier than being thin and sedentary. As an example from the article, we hear about Bliss who weighs nearly 200 pounds with a body mass index higher than 35, which is obesity she is healthy. Another view is in the article “A weight on their shoulders” we find the typical body culture nowadays. Men and women work hard in gym. Women are stretching, running and cycling to burn fat, get fit and slender and men are spending their time on the machines to get bigger stronger and to gain higher muscle mass. The body culture today is not what it was supposed to be. Today people do not go to the gym to exercise for health reasons. They exercise to get a body that looks like a commercial body. “Beauty and the breast” this article tells us that women do everything to live up to the beauty ideals of today. The article criticizes that girls from the day they play with dolls are influenced by the beauty ideals. It says that the breasts beauty is their function. Today they learn something else too, that breasts are beautiful when......

How People Make Decisions

...How People Make Economic Decisions Paper ECO/212 Ralph Eric A. Banci April 30, 2012 Professor Charles Meyer How People Make Economic Decisions People, business managers, and government officials make decisions daily affecting their budget or scarce resources that they have. They decide on what and how much they want to buy or purchase some goods or services and at what price they are willing to pay. In addition, we make different decisions based on our lifestyles. Principles of Decision Making People take into account four principles when making decisions; people make trade-offs, people are rational, people respond to incentives, and cost of opportunity decisions. Trade-off is done because of the scarcity of resources, we make a decision to buy a certain good or service taken into consideration that we will not be able to buy another good or service. People are rational in a sense that they make decisions only after weighing the cost and benefits and take the action or decision only if the benefits outweigh the costs. People respond to incentives when making a decision to purchase goods or service. This is the reason also why companies advertised heavily and promote incentives to consumers. The cost of opportunity decision are caused by a variety of motivating factors including: reward, punishment, religious beliefs, envy, compassion. The scarce resources that people have means that people can never have everything that they want, choices......
