...English 101 Lincoln’s Challenge Everyone has certain moments in their lives that have a lasting impression. Some people get a new job, meet fascinating new people, or get married. The experience that made an impression, even changed my life was going to Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. This academy was one of many big changes in my life. The benefits of this academy will help me through the difficult trials of life that I will face in the years to come. Lincoln’s Challenge was a place for “troubled” teens to obtain a GED and get discipline. It was a military-based school in Rantoul, Illinois. Young adults from the ages of sixteen to eighteen would come there, voluntarily, to change their mischievous behavior. Last year I dropped out of MacArthur High School and enrolled in the academy. I was a junior when I left the high school, and I was truly scared out of my wits. What I had heard about Lincoln’s Challenge Academy, or LCA, were not too pleasant. I knew my past wasn’t the best, but from what I had heard from a few friends the other teens that were going to attend were going to be much worse. When I arrived at LCA in January, I was absolutely terrified. I didn’t want to leave the comfort of my home, parents, friends, or especially my bed! What made matters worse was that I would have to gone for six months without my phone! However, the promise of two three-day breaks in March and April and family visits every Sunday made the knot in my stomach shrink a little bit. When......

...Inter Cultural Paper In order to satisfy my thirst regarding the Asian culture and fulfill my “obligation” to my professor and myself I have studied and explored the Korean culture from every possible angle in the past nine weeks. One of the main topics that I found very intriguing and fun was my personal experience in Korea Town when I visited several celebrated sights for my final assignment. My first visit was at the Korean Cultural Center. The landmark provided a fair share of information about the Korean culture here in Los Angeles. The two stories building had many different exhibits about the past, the present and events that realistically showed the Korean traditional life from every possible angle. Historical artifacts, antic fixtures, customary clothing, paintings, and sculptures were among the many items that represented the vibrant Korean life in every detail. Traditional musical instruments were also represented; the Kayagum 12 string instrument that is used in folk music. The Kayagum is made from a rectangular board of paulownia wood with silk strings stretched across it. Another traditional instrument that got my attention during my stay was the Pyonjong percussion instrument that constructed with two rows of 8 metal bells, thus giving the instrument a range of precisely 16 tones. When you finally walk into our house, the experience begins. The captivating smell transports you into another dimension. My mother loves to cook, and the aroma of spices and vegetables simmering in a pot leaves a strong impression throughout the home. The sound of a cook hard at work distracts you with clanging, chopping, and shaking of her tools. The warmth of the air with these sweet aromatic smells makes you feel invited and happy to be there. ...An Unforgettable Moment It was November 5, 2012. It was raining and you could notice the clouds in the sky even though it was dark. While my father was driving the car, my mom was talking nonstop and my brother was taking a nap on my lap. I was staring out of the window and was thinking of that moment I was barely waiting for; the unforgettable moment of having my last thoughts while traveling to the airport, facing my dad’s feelings and saying goodbye to my parents .
