The Uses of Computers
Computers are machines that accept incoming data, process them and produce outputs-depending on the users' applications.
Present time, we are so much associated with these devices that without them we would not be able to live the way we do. They play a crucial role in everybody's life. They bring a major socio-economic revolution not only in India but also in the whole world itself. From pocket calculators to personal computers (PC), food processors and microchips entering through VCRS at home, their uses are manifolds.
The computers are employed to assist men in business organizations, in space and other researches and in many other walks of life. The personal computer (PC) is marching into the office where it is improving productivity by replacing paper works, customer services and job satisfactions for some.
Why Computers are used widely?
The computers process information that come in all shapes and sizes from any fields so accurately that some people may call these "Informatics"— The Science of Information Processing, i.e. the methods of recording, manipulating and retrieving information. It may be from a mathematical equation to a company's work-force necessary to produce a payroll or from meteorological department to forecast tomorrow's weather or from space research to project a new space craft. Whatever may be the case, why computers are used widely?
The following characteristics that make the computers very popular for its multifarious uses may give the befitting reply.
(i) Speed
First, the computers are regarded as high speed calculators. They can process voluminous data within a fraction of second which no human being could do earlier. If we want tomorrow's forecast today, meteorologists can use the computers for necessary calculations and analyses. The units of speed of a computer are the microsecond, the nano (10)-9…...

Use of Computer Aided Instruction in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

...Abstract The paper investigates the use of computer aided instruction (CAI) in teaching and learning mathematics. It also explores the use of Instructional Materials Aided Methods (IMAM) as a close substitute. From the study, it was clear that computer-aided instruction enhanced the students performance in mathematics The design of the study was experimental. The hypothesis were tested using T-ratio at 0.05 level of significance and a reliability index of 0.85 was calculated from the test items; while the data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Introduction One of the problems of teaching and learning is the method of imparting knowledge to learners. According to stone (1991), the major difficulty in sciences is the method by which the subjects were customarily taught without regard to instructional materials. The pedagogical approach in imparting knowledge to learners has become inadequate to their needs. Mathematics, like other science subjects, recorded poor students performance both in national and international examination (Ali, 1983). Many factors contributed to the performance of students in mathematics examination Akale, (1996), Okebukola and Jegede (1996), Ottiah (1997) and Ali (1998). The factors include: a. Inability of the mathematics teachers to put across the mathematics concepts to the students. b. Lack of skills and competence required for teaching mathematics. c. Shortage of qualified mathematics teachers. d. Lack of teaching......

Uses of Computers in Hospitals

...Uses of Computers in Hospitals The increasing population levels in our country and around the world means that doctors and hospitals have more patients than ever before. The advances in technology, such as the use of computers, fortunately allow the hospital staff to handle larger workloads and accommodate the increased need for their services. Computer and its peripherals are used extensively nowadays in hospitals for many purposes, as given below. 1. Medical Record Keeping : Electronic databases house information about patient medical histories, billing and payment records and insurance coverage. Computers allow hospital employees to manage this information efficiently, while limiting the use of paper and space needed to store hard copies of information. 2. Supply Inventory and Ordering : Inventories of hospital supplies can be tracked using computer systems that alert employees to the need to place a new order. This makes the management of hospital supplies practical and efficient. 3. Diagnostics: Doctors who work in laboratory settings frequently come across diseases and harmful agents that are difficult to diagnose. Doctors can set parameters in computer databases to assist them in diagnosing a condition in remote mode. 4. Research : Doctors use computers to conduct research on a patient's conditions or continue their own education. Are We Loosing the Ability to Solve Problems by Our Increased Use of Computers?

...Are We Loosing the Ability to Solve Problems by our Increased Use of Computers? It is hard to deny the increase use of computers in today's society for the past 30 years. Since the birth of personal computers in the 70's there has been a huge increase in sales worldwide. According to the Gartner group, the world’s leading information technology research and Advisor Company, 1.1 million PC shipments that were sold in 1980 contrast 336.6 million units are projected to reach in 2010; a 12.6 percent increase over 2009. It is no surprise then that in view of this ever increasing use of computers, some people have questioned if people are losing their ability to think for themselves. I believe this is not the case. We are not losing our ability to reason or solve problems, but instead we are now, through the use of computers, able to work at a higher level to solve more complex problems. In doing research for this topic, I discovered several articles opposing the idea of excessive use of computers, for example: According to the National Endowment for the Arts, literary reading declined 10 percentage points from 1982 to 2002 and the rate of decline is accelerating. Many, including Patricia Greenfield, a UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Children's Digital Media Center, Los Angeles, believe that a greater focus on visual media exacts a toll. ‘A drop-off in reading has possibly contributed to a decline in critical......

Use of Computers Disadvantages in Classrooms

...for students to create and submit work, and for teachers to easily receive, organize, grade, and return that work. Normally, performing a multitude of tasks requires the use of several different apps. In many cases, this might create more work than just receiving paper copies of work and grading it in the traditional way. * Wi-Fi issues. iPad use in the classroom is often heavily dependent on the quality of Wi-Fi at your school. Between iPads, phones, computers, and laptops, there are often many more devices fighting for Wi-Fi space than people in the building! A slow or disconnected Wi-Fi server can ruin an entire lesson. * The distraction factor. Electronics are great for learning, but they’re also great for distracting students. When they’re supposed to be working, it is very easy for them to quickly access a game, message, or app that they shouldn’t be using! * Charging issues. “Books don’t need to be charged,” a hard copy patriot might declare. And they’re right. Amidst all the iPad advantages, one disadvantage is that they need power. So if a student doesn’t have a charged iPad, then they lose access to all their learning materials for the day. * You still need a computer. While there are hundreds of new uses an iPad opens up for students, the fact remains that we still just need a computer to take care of many tasks. Sometimes it’s easier to create documents with a keyboard and mouse than it is trying to do the same thing with a second-rate app tool. ......

Do you find yourself gaining weight, more tired or out of shape? Then you probably should either not eat or eat something better for you. You should also get away from the computer and go for a walk or something. Prolonged computer use leads to obesity due to poor eating habits, lack of sleep, and decreased physical activity. Prolonged computer use leads to obesity due to poor eating habits. “Sedentary pursuits, such as watching television and computer use have contributed more than 25% of obesity in children” (Hill, & Peter, 1998). “As children increasingly spend more time in front of computer monitors as well as televisions the chances of obesity increases” (Hill, & Peter, 1998). The research found that kids who spent more time in front of a screen – regardless of the type – snack more frequently and are more likely to choose less healthy snacks. High TV viewers and computer/video game users both reported eating roughly 3.5 snacks a day – one full snack more than kids who had minimal exposure to these technologies. But children who watched two to six hours a day of TV were more likely than the high computer/video game group to eat high-fat foods such as French fries and chips according to research from the American College of Cardiology (Casteel,......

Computer Use at Work

...realize the impact; not getting homework done and staying up late to surf the internet. Teachers are requiring students at younger ages to get on the computer to do homework. There was a study done in 2006 that noted that “while computers clearly have a place in education, the evidence is mounting that our obsessive use of information technology is dumbing us down, adults as well as kids. While they can be engaging and resourceful tools for learning -- if used in moderation -- computers and the Internet can also distract kids from homework, encourage superficial and uncritical thinking, replace face-to-face interaction between students and teachers, and lead to compulsive behavior.” (Ferguson, 2005) Adults should knowing better than to stay up all night on the internet, as the result is fatigue on the job and the inability to get work done. However, with the internet’s accessibility everywhere, adults are on the internet which prevents work from being done. People can form internet dependency, which is problematic behavior caused by too much time on the internet. There are more serious offenses such as gambling or accessing pornography that cause serious consequences. Studies have shown internet addiction is attributed to loneliness, low self-esteem, and depression. There are also some that use it for procrastination alone. They use it to get rid of stress and entertain themselves while putting off work that needs to be done. (Davis, Flett, & Besser, 2002) The internet......

Ergonomics is an applied science devoted to incorporating comfort, efficiency, and safety into the design of items in the workplace (Shelly, & Vermaat, 2008). Studies done using ergonomics show that using the correct chair, keyboard, display device, and work surface configurations helps computer users work comfortably and efficiently and also preserve their health. According to previous studies, the majority of computer workers experience some eye or vision symptoms, but what was not clear was if whether these problems occur to a greater extent in these workers than in others who work in other visually demanding occupations. A national survey of doctors of optometry found that more than 14% of their present patients with eye or vision-related symptoms resulting from computer work.
