It starts when one of the sisters, named Rachel is trying to find her sister and the dress all over the house but she can't find it so she got angry because it it's hers. Before that, the other sister, named flora, saw the dress and just wanted to try it but when she tried it, it was like the dress where glued at her body, so she don't wanted to take it of because she felt like she was smarter in that dress and thinks Rachel don't need the the dress any more because shes already smart. So she's got piked up by her Italian friend. At the night the both of them its going to there mothers birthday. But the mother isn't glad, because it is her 40 year old birthday, and she feels she is began to be old.
And the sisters is angry at each other because of the dress so Rachel called to her father, and traveled home to him. So the mother was getting angry at flora because she was stealing the dress, so flora was going, and the mother was sitting at the bar alone the rest of the night.

The mother can maybe like alcoholic a little to much, she's 40 years old and it's her birthday. She's very sad because began to look older, and shes want to be younger.

Flora and Rachel’s relationship isn't very good because they two very different peoples, Rachel is a tough girl and Flora is a ”flower girl“. Rachel is very angry at Flora, because Flora was taken Rachels dress.

I think the story Is structured in a good way because it was really easy to read, so I liked the way It was structured.

One of the symbolisms is where Rachel was wearing a black dress and Flora is wearing af dress of light colours, that’s symbolism that Rachel is a Tough girl and Flora is a ”Flower girl“.

The theme is: fail to give charity

The Dress

...The Dress A dress is made of pieces of fabric, it is a thing you can hold and wear. You wouldn’t think a piece of fabric could tear a family apart. This short story by Julia Darling, is about jealousy, lack of communication and troubles between a single mother and her daughters. Some siblings solve their problems easily and get along very well, while others find it hard to believe that they share the same genes. The story tells about the relationship between a single mother, and her two daughters, Flora and Rachel. The mother of the two sisters, Flora and Rachel, has no name and is throughout the story only referred to as ‘mother’. She is divorced to the father of her daughters, therefore she is a single mother. She is forty years old and works as a successful bereavement counselor, who helps other people out every day. With all of that said it still seems like she is going through a rough time in her life. She seems to be hitting midlife crisis. She is unable to solve her daughter’s conflicts, you would expect a bereavement counselor to at least try to solve the problems of her own daughters but she keeps avoiding confrontations, which is quite ironic due to her profession. ““Flora!” whispered the mother, who wanted life to be calm, a flat sea with no sudden breezes. She liked emotions to be explored in safe rooms, with a clock.” (p. 3, l. 103-104) this refers to her job where the clock tells her when to end the emotional conversations with her clients. The mother spends......

The Dress

...The Dress The author of this short story is Julia Darling, and it was published in 2006. The Dress is about a strained relationship between the two sisters Flora and Rachel, and their relationship to their mother, who cannot handle the two sisters as good, as she can handle her job as bereavement counselor. The background to the conflict starts is a stolen silk dress, and escalates on the restaurant, where they are celebrating the mother’s birthday. This ends in serious consequences. Rachel goes to live with her father and Flora gets kicked out of the house by her mother. The main theme of the short story is family relationships with the sub-themes of jealousy and troubles of being single parent. The narrator changes between a 3rd person narrator and 1st person narrator, but mostly it is a 3rd narrator with an omniscient view, because the omniscient narrator is “zoomed” in on the persons. The narrator knows everything, and the reader knows how the girls think about each other for instance “It made her feel, taller, braver, cleverer, and Rachel was all those things already.” (Lines 36-37), which indicate that Flora, perhaps, is a little jealous of her sister. The story starts out with that the reader hears that Rachel stands in a dark hallway in the house, which gives the in Medias res effect, where the reader dumps straight down in the story. The story’s time is chronological as it lasts from morning to evening, but the structure of the story is not chronological,......

...How to Dress with Style Approximately 1,353 words Everyone has something they’re good at: whether it’s writing, playing sports, cooking, dressing and so on. There’s an old saying, “The clothes don’t wear you, you wear the clothes”. I often see someone on the street dressed so horrendously that I see only the clothes, and not the person wearing the clothes. For example, I saw someone wearing baggy business suits in the financial districts, like we’re in the 90’s. As a result, he definitely left a bad impression. Dressing stylishly is not easy; however, it is a great investment and gets the person going everyday asking the same question: what should I wear today? In order to dress stylishly, you ought to have the essentials mastered, such as tailored fit, color coordination and self-confidence. I feel like every individual should dress with style because the way they dress reflects their personality and dressing with style means that you are doing it your way. The key to dress stylishly is be yourself because your fashion sense, taste and style......

...The Dress - Essay The community contains a lot of different perspectives and views on what a perfect family life is. What is a perfect relationship between siblings? And how do you as a mother manage to enable a good relationship between mother and daughter? Do we manage to satisfy ourselves and the way we are living our family life, or do we all need some kind of an accept in life to manage living a perfect family life? What happens when our family life is torn between? In the present society we are having problems being true to ourselves and our fellow human beings which often causes conflicts. This is exactly some of the main subjects The Dress is dealing with. We are introduced to the feminine third-person narrator named Rachel, who is accusing her sister Flora for having stolen her new dress, bought for the occasion of their mothers’ birthday. You could say that the relationship between Rachel and Flora is very common for sisters at almost the same age. In a way relationships between sisters or siblings will always be influenced by jealousy. The fight about the dress is influenced by the indirectly jealousy between the sisters. As mentioned in the quotation below it becomes some kind of an occupation for Flora having the dress, wearing the dress and feeling the dress. And it also reflects her rising jealousy towards Rachel. “It made her feel taller, braver, cleverer, and Rachel was all those things already” One could say that there is a gap among Rachel and Flora......

The Dress

...The Dress Family conflicts in modern families are very typical today. People are getting divorced and children doesn't talk to their parents because of childish conflicts like we see in "The Dress." Rachel ends up leaving the house because of an insignificant dress. From my perspective it seems completely ridiculous to make such a big deal out of it. The two daughters, Flora and Rachel, are even ruining their mother's 40th birthday because of their own little conflict. That is very selfish by the them. They obviously had a nice evening planned at a magnificent restaurant. I'm sure the mother had been looking forward to it. Though, the daughters still manages to ruin the evening. I'm sure the mother must've been furious and even disappointed over her daughters. The mother seems like a nice woman. She believes in justice. In the end when she finds out that Rachel had stolen the dress from Flora she punishes her. She orders Rachel to go dig the dress back up from the ground and give it back to Flora. Even though the daughters are acting childish in the story, they both respect their mother. It was interesting to see how Rachel carelessly lied to Flora at the restaurant when she asked if she had taken the dress but when the mother asked Rachel at home if she had taken it Rachel simply just had to tell her the truth. That shows Rachel's respect towards her mother. Flora and Rachel doesn't respect each other as much at all. Even though both of them probably are grown up since......

The Dress

...“What is a disordered family? The short story, “The dress” of Julia Darling 2006, illustrates exactly that. It tells the story of the relationship between two sisters and their mother, and the consequences of their poor communication skills and repressed frustrations. In the following analysis and interpretation, I will unravel the tangled threads of the complicated affair, by giving a characterization of the mother and revealing the relationship between the sisters. In addition to this, I will touch on the symbolism, structure and the themes of the short story. The plot begins at home, when Rachel discovers that her sister has stolen her new silk dress. For the evening the family have planned to eat at a modern restaurant, and for the occasion Rachel, the older sister, has bought a beautiful perfect blue silk dress. Flora finds the dress, when she is home alone and finds it impossible to resist the urge to try it on. Suddenly she finds herself strolling down the street, feeling elite and confident all because of the dress; qualities she sees in her sister, but fails to see in herself. By accident she ruins the dress, and in desperation and fear she buries it outside the house in the garden. When they later meet up at the restaurant, Rachel is furious with her sister making an uncomfortable mood at the table. The mother, as the bereavement counselor and low self-confidence woman she is, tries to avoid the fight by babbling on about unimportant stuff like, what is on......

The story is about Rachel’s dress, which she has been looking forward to wear at her mother’s birthday, but her sister Flora steals it and ruins it by spilling a drink on it while she is with her friend Alberto.
