The Road

...In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, It is said that fear is the strongest motivator in the world. People in fear are willing to do whatever, go beyond any border and forget all rules. Fear can easily take over our mind and control our every move. But how much does it take to push a person beyond his limits? What kind of a fear can make us forget everything about humanity and morals? These questions are one of the main themes in Cormac McCarthy’s novel ”The Road” We are all afraid of different things. Some are afraid to lose their family and friends others on the other hand their money and possessions. Cormac McCarthy’s great novel ”The Road” tells us a story of a post-apocalyptic world where everything is destroyed and life is almost extinct. There are left only handful people, who are willing to do everything to survive. But some of them are willing to go further than the others. Fear influences every person differently. But how can some of us still maintain our moral values even though we might be scared to death? In ”The Road” the main characters, the man and the boy represent a group of people who does not let the fear control their minds. The man is constantly afraid of his son getting killed or starving to death. The boy is worried about his father and about being left alone in this terrible world if his father should die. Every single day they live in fear. They can never be sure whether they find food, whether they will survive the cold nights in the woods, or......

The Australian Road Rules

...THE AUSTRALIAN ROAD RULES – WHAT ARE THEY AND WHERE ARE THEY GOING? Ian W Shepherd and Fiona A Calvert National Road Transport Commission PO Box 13105 Law Courts MELBOURNE VIC 8010 “Motoring in Australia is daily taking on more of a national aspect by shedding its earlier parochial garb. Yet there are few fields in which legislative and regulatory inconsistency have freer play than in the Australian motoring world. At the moment a motorist passing from one State into another has to unlearn much of what he has learned in his own State and to learn a lot that is strange to him. This produces irritation – or worse - in the motor owner and motor driver, and tends to unnecessary costs of traffic administration (which the motorist usually has to pay for). It also adds to traffic dangers through ignorance or unfamiliarity with local conditions or practices on the part of drivers. Therefore, anything that can be done to lay down a national basis for motor traffic control must be of much practical value. Commonsense suggests that there should be uniformity instead of variety, and that the growing volume of interstate traffic requires a national instead of a local viewpoint in things common to traffic in all of the States. Were all motor vehicles kept within their own State boundaries, little disadvantage would arise from the present welter of confusing motor legislation, but when a system becomes national, a system (or lack of system) of......

To Stay Safe Walking, Follow These Rules of the Road:

...choose the side where you are facing oncoming traffic. In North America, this is the left side of the road. This gives you the best chance to see traffic approaching closest to you and take evasive action when needed. • Cross Safely: Mom was right: look both ways before crossing any street. At controlled intersections, it is wise to cross only when you have the pedestrian crossing light, but even then, drivers and bikers may have a green light to turn and won't be expecting you to be in the crosswalk. Make eye contact with any drivers who may be turning. Give them a wave. Make sure they see you. In a car-walker interaction, you can only lose. • Walk Single File: Unless you are on a sidewalk separated from the road or a wide bike lane, you should walk in single file. This is especially important on a road with lots curves, where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you before hitting you. While it can be enjoyable to walk down the road two to three abreast chatting merrily, drivers don't expect it and you may lose your best walking buddies. • Stay Aware of Bikes and Runners: Share the road and path with bikes and runners. Bike riders should alert you when approaching from behind with a bike bell or a "passing on the left/right." Listen for them, and move to walk single file, allowing them to pass safely. Runners should also call out for passing. Bike-walker collisions can result in broken bones or head injury for either — and you aren't wearing a helmet. • Be...

As the leading traffic safety advocate for the state, my office has led the charge against drunk and distracted drivers. Dod Contract Rules of the Road

...Sunday, October 27, 2013 RULES OF THE ROAD OPENING A SMALL BUSINESS WITH FEDERAL CONTRACTS BY KRISTIN VELIX BUS330 CONTRACT ADMINISTATION AND MANAGEMENT PROFESSOR CHRISTOPHER KING I have built my hobby of building small model airplanes into a small business, and believe with my proven products from sales to small investigative firms that I may be able to compete for contracts with Homeland Security. I have built a very small remote control airplane that is capable of long sustained flight, fitted with camera’s that can gather intelligence without anyone knowing they are there. oHoH Homeland Security could use them anywhere in the world to gather intelligence, and I believe they would be interested in buying my product. I will need to go to the Small Business Administration for information on how to compete with the larger aircraft companies and on loans to open my own manufacturing plant. I have the business plan, plant, product and investors that are willing to be employee’s, and are business professionals in every sense of the world to help me. I also have the advantage by using the SBA to help us pave the way to a lucrative contract with Homeland Security. In 1984 the Competition in Contracting Act ( CICA) was enacted. This amendment was created to alter methods of forming contracts and further states that Government Agencies utilize to promote the use of full and open competition in the procurement of goods and services, like my small business and can give me...

The Influence of Status on Pedestrians' Failure to Observe a Road-Safety Rule

...Anya Yereshchenko General Psychology Chapter 14 Assignment 19 September 2011 The Influence of Status on Pedestrians' Failure to Observe a Road-Safety Rule A lot of previous research has been done that was similar to Guegen's experiment, but those experiments failed to show a control group. The control group tests the baseline, which is the actual number of people that violated the crosswalk on everyday basis. Without a control group the results couldn't have been compared to the control group, and that made the research useless. This is an example of an experimental research because it shows cause and effect through the use of an independent variable that is changed by the used of a dependent variable. That dependent variable is measured. A control variable is also used to identify and measure other causes and variables that possibly existed in the situation before it was changed and measure by the experimenter. This study is not a descriptive research because descriptive research simply describes the research itself without drawing any conclusions from the research. In this research three variables are included, along with measuring and testing. This makes the research too detailed and involves conclusions which don't allow this to be a descriptive research. This research cannot be correlational because a correlational study has one variable predicting another variable. The research that is conducted in this project uses dependent and independent variable......

Antebellum Texas

...ANTEBELLUM TEXAS. In the drama of Texas history the period of early statehood, from 1846 to 1861, appears largely as an interlude between two great adventures-the Republic of Texas and the Civil War.qqv These fifteen years did indeed lack the excitement and romance of the experiment in nationhood and the "Lost Cause" of the Confederacy. Events and developments during the period, however, were critical in shaping the Lone Star State as part of the antebellum South. By 1861 Texas was so like the other Southern states economically, socially, and politically that it joined them in secessionqv and war. Antebellum Texans cast their lot with the Old South and in the process gave their state an indelibly Southern heritage. When President Anson Jonesqv lowered the flag of the republic for the last time in February 1846, the framework for the development of Texas over the next fifteen years was already constructed. The great majority of the new state's approximately 100,000 white inhabitants were natives of the South, who, as they settled in the eastern timberlands and south central plains, had built a life as similar as possible to that experienced in their home states. Their economy, dependent on agriculture, was concentrated first on subsistence farming and herding and then on production of cotton as a cash crop. This meant the introduction of what southerners called their "Peculiar Institution"-slavery.qv In 1846 Texas had more than 30,000 black slaves and produced an even larger......

Immigration to Texas

...Name Gov 2306 -23006 2014 Fall Semester Professor Griggs Word Count: 1,322 Immigration in Texas Immigration policy in the United States, namely in Texas, is a great source of controversy amongst lawmakers and the public. An immigrant is a “person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another” (ProQuest). America currently has about 11.5 million illegal immigrants living within its borders (Passel). With this large of a population, immigrants do have an impact on the population and the laws for how to deal with them must be updated. There is a large number of the illegal immigrants working for cash, sharing houses, avoiding taxes, and still sending their children to public schools, and driving on the roads that citizen’s tax money pays for. Currently the law on illegal immigrants is mostly black and white stating that it is a crime to be in the country illegally. However, if the government updates the system to help naturalize them lawfully, states and the immigrants both have a potential to benefit. There are many factors contributing to the immigration of illegal immigrants into Texas. The majority of these immigrants are from Central America through the border shared with Mexico. There are push and pull factors causing them to move here. “The report from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops identifies poverty, paucity of educational opportunities, the urge to join family already in the U.S., and the fear of growing crime as powerful factors propelling......

Also, it caters to the employees need to achieve a certain social standing. Thus, the employee begins to realise that only by forwarding the goals of the organisation will his or her own goals be met. In this way, the human resource has emerged as a business partner that works in tandem with the organisation as far as goal achievement is concerned. (Green, 2002. P 111) Change Manager The modern day economy is one that is changing with each passing day. The state of commerce is not what it used to be, say, a few decades ago. This is basically due to the fact that the new rule of thumb is that the only constant is change. The face of politics has greatly shaped the way the economy of a country and therefore, that of an organisation, operates. In this way, there is a sense of constant interaction with the dynamic environment within which organisations today thrive. The role of communication and technology in this regard, is also an important one. With the advent of the communication and information era, there is a slow redefinition of borders and geographical demarcations. It is now possible to sell products and manage businesses anywhere in the world, from anywhere in the world. This has had a large bearing on the state of the balance of payments of entire countries and the organisations that......

Road Tests for the Elderly

...of the way?” (Chang) In Illinois, an 84 year old drove her car through the wall of an elementary school into a cafeteria. That incident claimed the life of 2nd grader Ryan Wesling. As we age our hand-eye coordination ages with us becoming lagged and not as sharp. There are hundreds of cases across the nation of elderly drivers causing car accidents and deaths. Insurance statistics show that after the age of 75, the risk of being the responsible party of a car accident both fatal and non-fatal greatly increases (highway). Illinois and New Hampshire are currently the only two states in the Union that require road tests for people over the age of 75. I believe that there needs to be a national road test that all citizens over the age of 75 must be required to take and pass in order to continue driving. There are concerns that if the elderly are required to take another road test and do not pass, that they will be out of means of transportation. Elderly citizens who have retired like to feel that they have a certain amount of control over their lives as their ability to do physical tasks deteriorates. The ability to drive wherever and whenever gives them a sense of independence and freedom. Taking that privilege away from them may seem unfair but for the sake of their safety and public safety it should be a priority. There are both state and federal programs available to provide the elderly with alternate means of transportation. Illinois has passed a law in 2011, called the......
