2. What Knowledge, Traits, Behaviors, and Attitudes Should a Team Leader and Team Members Have and Why?

...There is a multitude of aspects that all culminate into the success of a team, from traits and behaviors, to the attitude of a team leader and its members down to the overall knowledge base that is shared in the group dynamic. When working in a group dynamic, having sub groups or individuals working on specific targets and goals is common. Establishing the rules of communication early and how tasks will be handles will go far in mitigating problems that may arise along the way. Breakdowns in coordination can happen at any given moment, and because of the group interdependence, a small breakdown can escalate and encroach onto other areas. A good way to circumvent possible problems is for the entire group to understand the events that are critical to the success of the team. Leaders should also have a strong base of expert and legitimate power that stems from their own authority granted by an organization as well as their expertise, skill and knowledge regarding the project. When a leader is fully capable and respected by the group, this also aids the transitional period as a group moves from one stage to another. There are a number of traits that could make an individual successful, or make them a hindrance in a team. The first that is important is the ability to be a self-starter, or a person who is able to undertake tasks that need to be accomplished. When a group begins to flow and advance past the initial phase, depending on how its established, there could be a lot...

Do All Teams Need a Leader

...International Teams: Beyond Cultural Differences Multicultural teams are different. In addition to culture the team needs to consider: * the purpose for its existence, - the influence of personality differences, - the impact of cultural and professional identities, - the importance of emotional intelligence, - the vital role of adequate support systems. Team leaders need updated global competencies which they may not have learned in business school. Multicultural Teams are Complex Cross-cultural knowledge is an obvious pre-requisite for working with any team whose members come from different cultures. We acquire this knowledge from our reading, from our studies, from company-sponsored seminars and most importantly by maintaining a very high level of self-awareness when we step outside our own cultural boundaries. However managing cross-culturally is complex because real business issues are complex and often require more than a linear solution. So, how do we avoid the trap of over-simplifying the complexity of the issues faced by international teams? Let’s agree that there is more to understanding an international team than being aware of the diversity of national cultures represented by the members. We know from experience that there are key differences found on any team which may include gender, race, individual personality, cognitive and emotional intelligence, educational, and occupational backgrounds. Consulting to international teams and......

Leadership Styles & the Role of a Team Leader

...leadership style is how the task is approached while motivating and instructing a team. Without an effective leader the completion of the goal is reduced. Leadership Styles The authoritarian leader tells people how they want things done without discussing it with others. This style is commonly seen used in services such as the Army, where a strict role of discipline is expected from soldiers under higher commands. In war, there is no time to think so a set task can help prevent deaths and mistakes. It also helps newer recruits know what to do when they need to. Authoritarian leadership is useful when working with time restraints and deadlines. These leaders often keep their team motivated which allows jobs to be finished quickly and effectively and allows the best equipped to be making decisions. However, it may lead staff to feel unappreciated and angry. This style can also prevent staff from developing their own initiative. Communications can break down and in the long run the employees can lose their drive for the job. The democratic leader encourages people to be part of the decision making process. The leader is still in control, however, this leadership style allows others to use their personal experiences and expertise to help the team. An example of this style could be at a community meeting with the public; they bring forth their suggestions but in the end it is the leader that has the final say. Democratic leadership is very useful for problem......

How Team Leaders Show Support–or Not

...RESEARCH & IDEAS How Team Leaders Show Support–or Not Q&A with: Teresa Amabile Published: May 31, 2004 Author: Martha Lagace What does a team leader do so that employees know they are being supported? A Q&A with HBS professor and creativity expert Teresa Amabile about new research. team leader. This led us to delve more deeply into the different types of leader behaviors that appeared, and to look at how those specific behaviors influenced people's perceptions of leader support and, ultimately, their creativity. What do leaders do to make employees in creative functions feel supported or not? That was one of the research questions posed by Harvard Business School professor Teresa Amabile and colleagues in what has turned into a penetrating study of creativity in organizations. By analyzing nearly 12,000 daily diary entries from employees working on creative projects—everything from making a new high-strength fabric to developing a database for a global hotel chain—they were able to chart how and why team leaders have enormous impact, positive or negative, on creativity. Amabile et al.'s findings were published in the February issue of The Leadership Quarterly as "Leader Behaviors and the Work Environment for Creativity: Perceived Leader Support." Amabile, an influential scholar on creativity, conducted the research with Elizabeth A. Schatzel, Giovanni B. Moneta, and Steven J. Kramer. She recently discussed their findings with HBS......

Understand the Role and Responsibilities of the Team Leader.

...responsibilities of the team leader. 1 Outline the role of the team leader. Henry Fayol was one of the early leading theorists for revolutionising the ideas of management. His vision and work categorised the principles of a manager into fourteen main categories. Fayol streamlined his work into four primary function of management; leadership, planning, controlling/monitoring and organising. Using these four categories we could outline the role of a team leader. (http://www.mindtools.com) Leadership – It is a team leader’s responsibility to know and understand the objective and purpose of when to act, listen and be able to offer clear explanations for their decisions, and be able to give and receive constructive feedback through praise or when dealing with poor performance. A successful team leader will be able to recognise success and mistakes and be able to develop learning from them. They will be able to delegate, lead by example, promote individual talent and be open to new ideas. A good leader will be able to encompass the three main functions of a successful team, focussing on the task, the team and the individual functions and adapt the needs accordingly to suit each given situation as specified in John Adair’s model. Growing Manages, Moving from Team Member to Team Leader

...rP os t KEL629 BRENDA ELLINGTON BOOTH AND KAREN L. CATES Growing Managers: Moving from Team Member to Team Leader op yo Melissa Richardson sat stunned in her office in Phoenix, Arizona, after a disastrous early July meeting with her boss, Beth Campbell. In March, Richardson had been the top Chicago salesperson and a high-potential candidate for management at ColorTech Greenhouses, Inc., a premium grower and distributor of annual and perennial flowers. Richardson remembered the call she had made to her mother, who still lived in her childhood home on the north side of Chicago. “Mom, I just got off the phone with the southwest regional sales manager in Los Angeles,” she had said. “They want me for the sales manager spot in Phoenix!” Richardson had been looking for an opportunity to move up at ColorTech, and her boss had recommended her for the promotion when the position opened. Thirty-two years old and single, Richardson had been excited to show her new team how to break into the top sales ranks the way she had done. tC But after only a few short months, she had failed to improve her team’s performance and felt like a liability on her regional manager’s watch list. Richardson wondered how things had gone so wrong so quickly and what she could do to fix them. About ColorTech Greenhouses, Inc.
