...Bern: Peter Lang. Chapter 1 Constructing knowledge together Melinda Dooly Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. (Henry Ford) Summary In this chapter, we briefly explain what we propose as a working definition of cooperative and collaborative learning and why it is important. This chapter gives an overview of how the premise of constructivism provides an important axis for collaborative and cooperative work. We also examine how this type of approach easily fits with online language learning projects. Basic points for setting up online collaborative projects are given, however these examples are quite general in this chapter. Specific examples of how collaborative and/or cooperative learning can be explored with network-based learning are provided in Chapters 3 and 4, which describe some ICT tools in more detail. Constructing knowledge together: collaborative or cooperative learning? Collaborative learning requires working together toward a common goal. This type of learning has been called by various names: cooperative learning, collaborative learning, collective learning, learning communities, peer teaching, peer learning, or team learning. What they have in common is that they all incorporate group work. However, collaboration is more than co-operation. Collaboration entails the whole process of learning. Collaborative Writing

...Collaborative Writing What is collaborative authoring or writing? One definition is: activities involved in the production of a document by more than one author, then pre-draft discussions and arguments as well as post-draft analyses and debates are collaborative components. [1] Based on this definition, the collaborative authoring process includes the writing activity as well as group dynamics. Another definition is "...any piece of writing, published or unpublished, ascribed or anonymous, to which more than one person has contributed, whether or not they grasped a pen, tapped a keyboard, or shuffled a mouse." [61] This definition alludes to the complexity of identifying and acknowledging contributions and their contributors. With collaborative authoring, there is a meshing of the complexity of (technical) writing along with the challenges of collaboration. Given that writing is a complex , open-ended task, there are many ways of stating meaning. With multiple authors, this adds to the complexity. The acts of collaboration and writing as they relate to collaborative authoring include: establishing an agenda or goal of the collaboration effort, identifying writing tasks and dividing those tasks among group members, tracking individual idea generation, defining rules for document management, identifying roles for group members, communicating ideas, and managing conflict. Collaborative authoring, therefore, requires effective communication between members of the writing......

...Insider Trading in Business Ethics Insider trading in any kind of business can be considered an ethical conflict. Although, it may be unethical of the actual trader’s part, it may be just as unethical on the behalf of the person who plays the role of the messenger. The messenger may be prohibiting the action that is to be taken place by giving information out. There is a recent and familiar story of insider trading that took place, which is the Martha Stewart case. According to Robert W. McGee, Martha Stewart was investigated for insider trading for selling some stock shares after she was leaked information about the decline in price. She would have taken a loss if she was not informed about the decline. She was given information that was not made public yet and this is where it becomes insider trading and the question of unethical comes into play. Although she was not prosecuted for the inside trading, she was prosecuted for altering records and lying about it (2008, p. 213-214). This situation shows how it is an ethical conflict because she had the opportunity to choose whether she used the information she was given. She chose to use it for her personal gain and by doing this broke the law and probably cheated others out of their money. The consequence for this ethical conflict is that, number one, it is illegal so therefore if you get caught you will be in trouble and probably do some jail time, and number two having to live with the guilt of doing the wrong thing.......

Collaborative Leader

...Are You A Collaborative Leader? As a collaborative leader a person must have formidable skills in the areas of attracting different talent, the ability to connect significant ideas, people, and resources, and set the tone by being a great collaborator within the top level of the organization first. Once there is a collaborative mind set at the top most likely it will trickle down within the rest of the organization and allow middle levels to team up better on efforts to improve business for the organization. Collaborative Communication

...Collaborative Communication Matthew Thomas ITT Technical Institute GS2745 Collaborative Communication Technology today has opened the door to a new modern, convenient and efficient way to network. With the use of professional business and social media sites, networking with potential employers and employees have drastically improved. With so many workers worldwide now working in virtual teams, many business relationships do depend on technology. We now live in a global workplace without time zones or office hours. You might be on a conference call with Europe in the wee hours and have to get your kids to a soccer game in the afternoon. You can do it working virtually, and there’s real value in accommodating that employee need. The better that mobile technology becomes, and the more employers embrace the “bring your own device (BYOD)” to work philosophy, the more deeply connected workers become to their workplaces, which exist on the same devices as their social networks and family photos. Also, collaboration used to happen in board rooms with whiteboards and bagels. Today, it’s on documents being edited by multiple people all over the world at the same time. It’s sharing screen data and chatting over video. Seventy-nine percent of people work on virtual teams. By leveraging video in a collaborative work environment, it can take what was normally a 90 minute call down to 60. That makes time for a more productive day. Another thing is the factor of “working from home”...
