The communication channel changes that I noticed went from the owners being the sole source of communication with the employees to the operations manager. The owners talked directly to each employee, but when the operations manager took over his source of communication became through written word and email. He first created an employee manual then went strictly to memos over email. There was never direct face-to-face communication any more. The owners lost their voice with the shop. They weren’t in on any of the new ways of communicating with their employees. It also seemed like the owners didn’t really know what was going on in each of the stores.

By having new employee meetings and training available for the new employees, this would really help them to also know and gain an understanding of what is expected of them. This will help alleviate the employees learning the “wrong way” and won’t be taught from other employees that may be lazy or not as knowledgeable. Also, if they were to have a monthly meeting with everybody -- owners, managers, and employees – then if anything is new or changing for that month everybody will know about it at the same time. Also that is a good time to bring up any concerns that anybody has. It is just nice to know what to plan for each month, even though the information may be the same as last month.

Depending on the culture background of an employee he or she may not respect their superiors or take being told what to do for them. If the owner or manager were to go to them and talk to them about their culture and their concerns, then hopefully an understanding could be accomplished and even a compromise could be made. For example Jose does not feel uncomfortable being managed by Coral who is a woman. In his culture men are not supposed to take orders from woman.…...
