February 2, 2010 STRENGTH QUEST EXERCISE We will explore and review the findings from the strength quest exercise that was taken online and give a brief description of my supervisors view on leadership skills. I will compare my personal leadership skills in contrast to my supervisor’s ideals. Then I will identify my leadership skills and how they are applied in my nursing practice based on the findings of our exercise.

The development of modern nursing in the areas of education, philosophy, and wisdom has evolved with help form many nursing leaders. The complex and dynamic nature of global health care is constantly changing and providing new opportunities in the nursing profession. In today’s world, nurses assume many responsibility specifically leadership and management in the work place. The leadership roles extent from bedside nursing to the nurse executive with their ultimate focus on the patient’s comfort and care. To be a successful leader one should posses qualities of responsibility, honesty, effective communication, and good judgment with problem solving skills. A nurse leader not only can make a difference in patient’s life but can also create a teamwork environment with open communication, feedback, and goal accomplishment. In order to become an effective leader one should identify their own strengths and weaknesses to improve patient’s outcome. Thus, by sharing knowledge and collaborating with professors, managers, and peers; the nursing leader is there for increasing his/her leadership skill.

It's likely you can name some exercises which fall into each category such as walking for aerobic exercise and strength training for anaerobic exercise, but do you know why these things fall into those respective categories. Let's take a closer look at the differences between these two forms of exercise and explore what is best for your body. Oxygen Supply The technical difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercises is the amount of oxygen required by the muscles for support and where that oxygen is coming from. With aerobic exercise your muscles need a continued supply of oxygen, which comes from the lungs. Throughout the workout your muscle activity depletes its store of oxygen so it must be replaced through the lungs, which is why you typically breathe heavy while out for a jog or walk. With anaerobic exercises the lungs don't have time to supply oxygen and the exercises are performed without that replenishing supply. Since the lungs are not working hard to replenish oxygen to your muscles, you typically don't get as out of breath with these exercises. He is pre-hypertensive and wants to be preemptive in taking action against high blood pressure. ...Dowd and Friedman’s Strengths Thomas Friedman and Maureen Dowd have covered numerous subjects in the articles I read. The articles these writers produce have exceptionally interesting making it obvious as to why there opinions are so highly valued. Some of the issues they chose to cover were unique due to the little coverage put out by the mass media. Certain aspects of Friedman and Dowd’s articles have stuck out to me and shown me why their articles are so widely read. One part of Dowd I enjoy in particular is her use of slang and contemporary phrasing to make her writing sound young at heart. In her article on November 20th titled “Nuking the White House,” Dowd uses phrases such as “a bunch of old, white, Republican dudes.” She also in this article refers to President George W. Bush as just “W.” as she does in many other articles. Although some may find this annoying I on the other hand think her minor use of slang gives personality to the writing. Dowd’s use of slang catches my attention when I’m reading her articles and it makes her seem more down to earth. After reading Thomas Friedman’s articles I found that he is particularly skilled at coving topics dealing with foreign affairs. His outstanding knowledge in globalization makes him especially good at covering this topic. In 1995 Friedman was The New York Times’ foreign-affairs columnist. ...‘The House of Strength’ Before western influence, ancient Iranians participated in numerous sporting events, much like the Greeks and their Olympics. Iranians though prided themselves in a type of wrestling called “Koshti Pahlavani” or “Heroic Wrestling”, where they would do graceful but powerful moves to pin their opponents. In order to train for events such as this, they developed a place to go to gain the strength, power, and endurance necessary to master their event. This place was known as the “Zurkhaneh” or “House of Strength”. The Zurkhaneh was originally a place to train and get closer to God, through weight training, because strength was seen as something godly. The Zurkhaneh housed the one true Iranian way of weight training, “Varzesh-e-Pahlavni” or “The Workout of Heroes”. This workout was a 60-90 minute routine of different lifts and exercises all in alignment to the beat of drums and bells. Now although there are many technical parts to the Zurkhaneh, like who leads it and different levels and rankings (much like those of Karate and Tae Kwon Do), I am going to focus specifically on the weight training aspect of the Varzesh.
