Social Web and Users today

In today’s society, the Social web is a booming industry. There is no set age limit as to who can you is. There are no boundaries as to what can be done. There are many different topics involved in using the social web. There are pages like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that are like the online diaries of social web. Then there is Youtube which is like a database of nothing but videos for people to search. There are also websites like LinkedIn, a professional network. There is also online dating pages and pages for stock markets as well. There are so many social web sites that affect every ones lives in different ways. It is amazing how I am able to connect with people from school, professional arenas, social arenas, and social networks all by internet. On the internet, we have websites like Facebook. Facebook originally started out for college students only. Now it has evolved into a page that any aged person can have. It is a place to upload pictures and videos. You can keep people updated on your life from across the world. As of right now Facebook has over 845 billion active users. People upload over 250 million photos every day. Facebook has been used to promote celebrities and other businesses. People can have a Facebook page to raise money from a fundraiser or get people interested in their product or business. Statistics show that there are more males on Facebook then females. Also the 55 and up age group grew 922.7% in 2009. It seems like everyone has a Facebook now. Everyone from Kourtney Kardashian to all different sports teams. ( The only reason I know this is because my 54 year old father told me he was friends with Kourtney Kardashian.) Back to sports on Facebook, no one really needs to watch a sports game because it will be posted on the Facebook site when it is over. The social media is overtaking email, television, radio and everything else that had us connected to the outside world. Who needs to watch tv for hours long football game when you can just log onto Facebook, click on the webpage and look at the score, highlights or whatever you want from that game. Instagram is kind of a mini version of Facebook. It is a place to upload pictures and people can comment on them or like them. Your pictures can have captions and you can choose filters for your photos. Even though it is like Facebook in that aspect, you cannot leave comments on peoples pages. You can choose to follow people on Instagram and choose who you want following you. Social web is evolving more and more every day. Instagram was founded in 2010, so it is one of the newer websites. Twitter is another social web site. Twitter was created in 2006 and as of right now only 8% of internet users actually have an active account. Even though only 8% use it, there are over 177 million tweets sent daily and 466,000 new users each day. Twitter, like MySpace, mostly seems to be an online diary where people can keep up to date on what is going on in some ones life. “Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo.” (Wikipedia) The Social web has even broadened peoples relationships with online dating. Dating websites have become very popular over the last 10 years or so. They are a way for people to put on a website what their interests are and people to browse and see if they are interested in these people. The dating industry online has over 40 million users. There are over 1500 dating websites. Some of the more popular ones in the United States are ones like eHarmony.com and match.com. Religion is now a part of the online dating websites. They have Christian mingle and jdate.com so you can find someone with the same religion as you. Almost half of the men and women on dating websites Google their dates before meeting for the first time. This part of social media I feel affects users so much because 10 years ago they did not have websites like this and now people are getting married and finding their soulmates via the internet. Google is a search engine that is used worldwide. People use Google for everything. It can find just about anything you need. It can take you to Facebook or you can do something like type in a cooking recipe idea and it will find you thousands of hits. Google was founded in 1997 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It has come a long way and many of websites have been added to the list of what Google can find. Google gets over 4.7 billion searches each day and is the most popular search engine out there. Google has connected people all around the world and now they have now created translation bots. It is an app that can take a picture of words and translate it from the language it is in to the language you choose and understand. Not only dating sites but the social web is now part of the stock markets. It is small in the social web compared to Facebook, but it is a growing matter and something people will always be interested in. There are websites that people can go on, create a user and password and they can talk to other people about stocks, see how stocks are doing and get advice on what to do with their stocks. You can also by stocks like Facebook and Google. StockTwit has over 1.5 billion views per day. Not many people know about the stock market pages like this but it is growing in popularity. They do have books on how to use the stock markets, but why read a book when you can go online and talk to a live person about probabilities and what everyone else has experienced. Also with stocks, people can purchase stocks in Facebook, Google, and other social media pages. That is how much social media is growing, you can now purchase stocks and make money on it. Who wouldn’t want to purchase stocks in a growing market like the social media. In august 2004, Google closed at $108.31.In Sept 2012, Google closed at $749.38. That is a $641 increase in 8 years. Imagine if you put your money in Google in 2004. Facebook is newer on the stock markets. Facebook just hit the stock markets in May of 2012. The closed in May at about $38 and in Sept 2012 it closed at $20.79. I feel that Facebook is going to do as well as Google eventually, it just needs time. Google did go down the first few months it was first on the stock markets and then it has never been as low as that ever since.
YouTube is a website that you can upload your videos that you take or make. It was founded in 2005. Since then, YouTube has had about 35 hours of footage uploaded to the site every minute.”… the average YouTube user spends between 15 to 25 minutes per day watching video content posted on the main website.” (Why Do People Use YouTube? Understanding the Mind-Set of Your Niche Community on YouTube.) This shows how the social web affects its users. Technology is advancing every day and people are advancing as well.
People are using social media as a place to boost their business. Every single institution in the US and eventually the world is trying to or going to try to incorporate social media into advertising. That is where the users are. Advertising has a lot to do with how well Social Media is going to be affected. There are so many commercials and advertisements for all the different social web pages. Also with advertisements, people can now advertise for their own business on Facebook and twitter to get more views. “eMarketer predicts that $2 Billion will be spent this year (2008) on social network advertising worldwide and that this market will continue to grow - reaching $3.8 billion in spending by 2011.” (Wikipedia on advertising) People can use advertising via the social web and it will greatly benefit them if done right. If advertising is appealing to the eye then people will be interested and click on it. But if it is a very popular website, it will not be a problem to get people interested.
The internet is a very helpful source and none of this would be possible without it. People don’t even need email accounts anymore. All they need is the Social Web. Log in to Facebook and see what your friends have to say today. Or check your Facebook messages for a private message. People are friends with everyone they want to talk to anyways. Why keep a hand written diary when you can have a digital one? Why have a million photos shoved in a container when you can have them saved and for all your friends to see on Facebook? These websites are so popular they have billions of users and millions of hits and photos uploaded every day. Ashford University even has a Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn account. The social web is expanding every day and affects billions of people all over the world. People are staying connected from thousands and thousands of miles away via the social web. These are all affecting billions of people daily.

The Social Web: It Is What You Make It

...The Social Web: It is what you make it Instructor Debra Austin INF103 Computer Literacy Heather Miller August 6, 2012 The social web is a somewhat new and exciting place where people from all over the world can connect without leaving the comfort of their own homes. Like any type of newfangled technology there are upsides and downsides that need to be considered before deciding if this is a good or bad thing. Like many other activities that utilize time and provide an escape from the pressures of the day, the social web has many advantages and downfalls; however, it is up to each of us to decide whether to participate or not. According to oxforddictionaries.com, the Social Web, or the Social Network, is a “…dedicated website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc.”. The current top five social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and MySpace. All of these are places where you can connect with others to share opinions, play games, share interests, and overall, it is a place to be social. This is a place where someone who has more of an introverted personality or low self-esteem can be popular or outgoing; a place where a person can connect with people from different countries that they may never visit. Some people compare how many “friends”, or contacts, they have made on these sites; many may be people that you have not actually met face......

Web 2.0

...Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is a term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end- users utilize the Web. Basically, the term encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of interconnectivity and social interactions on the Web. Tim O'Reilly regards Web 2.0 as business embracing the web as a platform and using its strengths. The features that encompasses the essence of Web 2.0 are building applications and services around the unique features of the Internet, as opposed to building applications and expecting the Internet to suit as a platform. Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of "Web 1.0" to provide "Network as platform" computing, allowing users to run software applications entirely through a browser. While Web 2.0 technologies are difficult to define precisely, the outline of emerging applications has become clear over the past year. We......

The Progression of the Social Web

...The Progression of the Social Web Melanie Helm Info103: Computer Literacy (ADD1322E) Instructor Joan Rhodes July 1, 2013 The Progression of the Social Web From its humble beginning to the present day, it is mind boggling to think it has been a decade since the social web began and what is even crazier is that it has become an integral part of our everyday lives in modern society. There are now sites for virtually every special interest out there that we may have. There are now sites to share photos, videos, status updates, meeting new people, sharing recipes, sites to connect with old friends, and create new ones. It also seems there are social solutions for just about everything and every need. Social web has progressed in so many ways it is absolutely hard to keep up with these days. Usenets began in 1979 by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis. Usenet systems let users post articles or posts (referred to as “news”) to newsgroups. Usenets are the precursor of the RSS feed readers which are commonly used to follow blogs and news sites today. They do not have a central server or a dedicated administrator. Google groups and Yahoo!, which are group sites, use many of the original usenet systems. The first Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were primarily hosted on personal computers and users could only use it one at a time and had to login using a computer modem. BBS’s first came into existence in the late 70s. Though in a much slower fashion, BBS’s were the first to let users......

...Social Web Social web has been around for a very long time believe it or not. While it has its positives and negatives, the social web is a set of social relations that link people through the World Wide Web. It is a great way to communicate with others all around the world. You can keep in touch with friends and relatives, meet new friends, network for your business, and much more. The first email was send and delivered in 1971. Ward Christensen invented the first public BBS in the late 1970s, and another (named "The WELL") in the late 80's and early '90s arose as a popular online community. The actual first social website was Classmates.com (1995) by Randy Conrads then followed by SixDegrees.com (1997) by Andrew Weinreich. British computer scientist Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee wrote:” The Web is more a social creation than a technical one. I designed it for a social effect to help people work together and not as a technical toy. The ultimate goal of the Web is to support and improve our web like existence in the world. We clump into families, associations, and companies. We develop trust across the miles and distrust around the corner. What we believe, endorse, agree with, and depend on is representable and, increasingly, represented on the Web.” The social web has come a very long way and is now one of the most popular ways to communicate with family and friends. Even businesses are using the social web to network and advertise. Some of the......

...offer. Successful web design relies heavily upon a visual concept. Without effective visual design, almost everything on the internet is meaningless. It is visual design that grabs people's attention and encourages them to analyze the piece more carefully. The internet is a primarily visual realm, which is why interactivity, visual elements, and new technologies are such important aspects of great web design. “Since the 1990s (and really, for a select few people, even before that) website design was something that developed very, very quickly and changed rapidly over time. Website companies across the board have taken time and care to make sure that they are innovative and pushing boundaries, while also providing for viewers, visitors, and customers everything that they could possibly need to get the most out of their respective websites and other uses. Today, HTML5 looks poised to be one of the website designs of the future, but how exactly did we get here to where we are? And where have we come from with web design theory and practice, to reach 2013? Back in the early 1990s, HTML (the first iteration) was considered major website technology and innovation. Since then, CSS 1 and CSS 2, Javascipt, Flash, XHTML1, and even AJAX more recently have all come under as the hottest new thing in web design, some lasting mere months before something better innovated across the board. To get to where you are, though, you must know where you’ve come from – and with web design, that......

...Social Web Chari N. Clayton INF103 Catherine Doughty 12/16/2010 Social Web The Social Web is so changing and is expanding each and every day. From online education to Social networking, Social Web has become a part of everyone’s life some way, somehow. We are now able to share websites, share photos, and use Social networking as a friend locating tool, free of charge. With all of the options and choices we have available, we can do just about any day-to-day function if we have a computer with a web browser. What is Social Web? The Social web is a specified term for the World Wide Web as a kind of Social Media. The term is currently used to describe how people socialize or interact with each other throughout the web. The Social Web mostly refers to Social networking, MySpace for example, and content-sharing sites (which also offer a Social networking functionality) within Web 2.0. These Social websites are mostly formed around the connections of people of the same interest, but there are several theories that specify exactly how this formation works. There are for example said to be “people focus” websites such as Bebo, Facebook, and MySpace, that focus of social interaction often by making the user create an online identity and a profile. There is also socializing on the web that is typified by “hobby focus”. For example, if one is interested in photography and wants to share this with like-minded people, then there are photography websites...

Social Web

...The History of Social Web Ashley Jackson INF 103 Professor Jaclyn Minor May 24, 2012 The social web was first designed with the intention of just having a fun way to interact with friends and family over the Internet. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most popular forms of social interaction. This paper will discuss the past history of the social web, as well as the most popular sites of the present, including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and Friendster. I will show the pros and cons of social networking with facts and information I have obtained through research. The term “social web” does not exclusively belong to digital technology on the Web. On the contrary, social networks have been studied since the beginning of 20th century with the aim of comprehending how the members of a certain community interact and the mechanisms through which this interaction takes place, (Postigo, 2011). Today, social networking commonly refers to all those activities that are carried out within specific online services that provide free space and software tools, which allow users to create networks of people. In most instances, a social networking service is a website that allows individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile. The profile is usually made by filling out a template with the user’s personal data. This data is not only limited to the users’......
