Pro-Family Groups in Connecticut Rally Voters to Overturn Court's Gay 'Marriage' Ruling"

Pro-family activists in Connecticut are urging the people of the state to vote yes for a constitution convention when they head for the polls on Nov. 4.
Though the 4-3 split decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court on Friday effectively redefined marriage in the state, Connecticuters will have the opportunity to have the final say if enough voters rally behind a call for the state legislature to convene a state constitution convention.
Every twenty years, under the state constitution, the ballot question "Shall there be a Constitutional Convention to amend or revise the Constitution of the state?" is placed on the ballot for consideration. This year marks Connecticut's 220th since its admission to the Union in 1788.
The Court's willingness to undemocratically impose same-sex marriage on Connecticut has made it necessary for us to demand the right to Let the People Decide, expressed Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut (FIC), in a press release following Friday's high court decision.
And that is why thousands of us will vote 'yes' for a constitutional convention on November 4th."
If enough votes are found to favor a convention, it will be incumbent upon the state legislature to convene a state Constitution Convention, explained Matthew M. Daly, chairman of the Constitution Convention Campaign. There, the people of Connecticut can implement Initiative Referendum as a mechanism and amend the state Constitution for a 31st time. Rick Warren is scheduled to pray at the Barack Obama presidential inauguration. Warren, after praying at Barack Obama's inaugural he appears poised to be the moderate spokesman for the left of center evangelicals. Rick Warren has publicly stated that he is opposed to gay marriages. But he is trying to meet the gay lesbian community half way by not condemning them and trying to have some sort of compromise. Rick Warren is reaching out to the gay lesbian GLBT community and sort of apologizing for his remarks about gay marriage. But it appears that the Reverend Rick is going out of his way to demonstrate that he is not a right wing evangelical like latter-day Anthony Comstock, Ken Starrs and James Dobsons of the Christian right. And he's managed to persuade lesbian rock star Melissa Etheridge's one celebrity to another of his sincerity. She tells the story in the Huffington Post. Rick Warren Purpose Driven Church

Iowa Gay Marriage

Iowa gay marriage decision may hinge on legal standard Court must decide if state ban has 'rational basis' or requires 'strict scrutiny'
A former Iowa Supreme Court justice believes that the same-sex marriage case that the court will hear Tuesday may hinge on one of the first decisions the court will make, when they choose the standard of review to apply to the case. Those of us who believer in the Bible and listen to WAY FM Christian Radio, will be surprised on the abortion issue.
In Varnum v. Brien, six same-sex couples from Polk County are arguing that the state's 1998 ban on gay marriages is unconstitutional. The state is defending the Defense of Marriage Act, which passed by wide margins in the state Legislature a decade ago. See more details about the Tennessee governor candidates visit:
The three most recent state courts to rule on gay marriage were Massachusetts, California and Connecticut. The justices in all three states ruled that laws banning same-sex marriages were unconstitutional.
McCormick said he believed the quickest ruling he could remember from the Iowa Supreme Court came in roughly three weeks.
In yet another sign that Sen. John McCain will have a difficult time being all things to all voters this year, the Family Research Council says he needs to take a higher profile in fighting against gay marriage.

In an item labeled "Not So Straight Talk Express," the advocacy group for religious conservatives took McCain to task for not making a bigger issue out of the California Supreme Court's decision establishing a right for gay couples to marry.

FRC said McCain "has managed to keep a relatively low profile on an issue that is certain to take center stage in the general election."

California Marriage Amendment on Trial 2010

The California anti gay marriage amendment is on trial. While Arnold Schwarzenegger is on the liberal side of the issue, he as being sued as he is the Governor of California and represents the state. Scholars, gay and lesbian partners, and opponents of same-sex marriage are expected to testify about the nature of marriage and being gay during an unprecedented federal trial today to determine whether gays and lesbians may marry. The case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, is expected to become a landmark that eventually will be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Both sides have hired leading legal advocates. San Francisco's U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker, a Republican appointee known for independence and liberal thinking of the George Bush Administration, will decide whether Proposition 8's ban on same-sex marriage violates U.S. constitutional rights of equal protection and due process. Walker's pretrial rulings have tended to favor supporters of same-sex marriage. Unlike other court cases about marriage rights, the trial before Walker will involve weeks of testimony from witnesses on wide-ranging issues. Most likely, the gay side will win and President Barack Obama and the US Supreme Court willl therefore have to deal with the issue when it is appealed.
Previously in 2009, On a 4-3 vote, the California Supreme Court has destroyed the civil institution of marriage between a man and a woman, and law-abiding Americans must condemn it in the strongest terms. This arrogant judicial activism took 121 pages of contorted logic to explain and is no surprise coming from this San Francisco-based court. By bowing down to homosexual activists and the rebel city of San Francisco, the California Supreme Court has exchanged the rule of law for the rule of unbridled power to destroy all that is good and sacred. However, the terrible example of homosexual weddings should be short-lived. This extremely bad ruling will certainly spur Californians to vote in November to overrule the judges and protect marriage licenses for a man and a woman in the California Constitution. Information about Marriage Amendments
Churches may directly support marriage amendments or other similar legislation or initiatives, such as the abortion initiative in South Dakota. Since 1934, when the Internal Revenue Code was amended to include a limitation on lobbying activities of 501(c)(3) organizations, not one church has ever lost its tax-exempt status for engaging in too much lobbying. Contacting legislators to support the passage of a constitutional marriage amendment is considered lobbying, and such activity is clearly a permissible activity of churches. Christian Churches should be active against gay marriage, and gay apparel and toy ideas.

Virginia Marriage Amendment

Why does Virgina need a Constitutional Amendment to ban same sex marriage?

Virginia already has legislation denying same-sex marriage, but a constitution amendment is needed so that laws on the books would be more difficult to be overturned by the courts.
Anti Same Sex Marriage ban needed in Virginia
Six states recognize same sex unions in some form. A Constitutional Amendment to ban same sex marriage is need to strengthen current Virginia laws and to make more difficult for court challenges. A gay or lesbian couple could marry in another state, and move to Wisconsin and request that their civil union be recognized. An anti ban is therefore needed.

Same Sex Marriage Becoming More Common

Connecticut in April became the first state to voluntarily adopt a statute similar to Vermont's, which allows same-sex civil unions. The measure, which was signed by Republican Gov. Jodi Rell, went into effect October 2005 and makes Connecticut the sixth state to give some recognition to same-sex couples. A similar measure was approved by Maryland lawmakers but vetoed by Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich.
In Maine, voters rejected a measure placed on the Nov. 8 ballot by a church-backed conservative group, voting instead to keep a gay rights anti-discrimination law approved by lawmakers earlier this year. Alaska's Supreme Court in October ruled that state and local governments must provide the same benefits to employees' same-sex partners that spouses get. California's Legislature broke new ground Sept. 6 when it became the first legislative body in the United States to pass a bill legalizing same-sex marriage without a court order. Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the measure, however, saying he would rather leave it up to the state Supreme Court to decide whether California will allow gays and lesbians to wed. Against Gay Marriage

A study of the Bible will tell you that we should be against gay marriage.
Genesis 1:26-28

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Arguments Against Same Sex Marriage

Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?

(This is a synopsis of the new book by Dr. James Dobson, Marriage Under Fire.)
BOSTON (BP)-In an action that surprised even some conservatives, Massachusetts legislators Jan. 2 passed a proposed constitutional marriage amendment just hours before it would have died as the session ended.
The amendment, which would protect the natural definition of marriage statewide, now must pass once more in the next session if it is to appear on the 2008 ballot. If adopted, it would reverse a landmark court ruling from 2003 that legalized "gay marriage."
Just days ago the amendment appeared doomed. Legislators met in a constitutional convention three times in recent months but recessed each date without giving the proposal an up-or-down vote. Many observers thought the same thing would happen Jan. 2, the last day of the legislative session. Instead, the amendment received 62 votes-12 more than required under state law. Voting against it were 134 members. Under state law the proposal needed the support of only one-fourth of legislators in the 200-member chamber.
"It was a miracle," Kris Mineau, president of the Massachusetts Family Institute, told Baptist Press. "We did everything possible that we could do over the last year and a half to get to this point.... Nobody gave us a plugged nickel's chance and yet God made it happen."
A record 170,000 Massachusetts citizens signed petitions to qualify the amendment for legislative consideration, and Mineau and other amendment supporters were confident they had the 50 votes for passage. But when legislators met in November, opponents of the amendment-knowing it could pass if given a chance-voted 109-87 to recess until Jan. 2.
Amendment supporters, led by outgoing Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, subsequently filed a lawsuit against legislators in state court, asking the court to issue a decision laying out the state constitutional responsibilities of legislators. Two days after Christmas, the state's highest court unanimously ruled legislators had a "constitutional duty" to vote on the amendment. Mitt Romney proved not to be a friend of traditional marriage or the Ten Commandments.
Mineau applauded Romney and Democratic Senate President Robert Travaglini for their leadership on the issue. Travaglini was the presiding officer of the convention and supported the amendment. Additionally, Mineau said, there were more than 40 newspaper editorials statewide calling for an up-or-down vote on the amendment.
Homosexual activists were pressuring legislators to kill the amendment Jan. 2 and not advance it to the next session. Incoming Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick, a "gay marriage" supporter, also urged the legislature to adjourn without a vote, The Boston Globe reported. Mineau said it was "very disturbing" to have the next governor, "who is going to take the oath of office to uphold the constitution, coming to the legislature and calling on them to violate the constitution and the Ten Commandments."
Both sides of the political battle now will gear up for the next vote, which could take place before July.
"We still have in excess of 50 votes in the new legislature, but it's going to be a little tighter," Mineau said. "Truthfully, we were counting on 57 firm votes [Jan. 2] and we got 62. That was encouraging."
Massachusetts remains the only state in America to recognize "gay marriage," although three state courts this year are considering "gay marriage" suits. Mineau hopes Massachusetts is on its way to restoring the natural definition of marriage. "We're on second base, heading to third," he said.
Some Facts about marriage in Massachusetts
Real Marriage is... institution for a man and a woman. Marriage is not genderless. It is a union of two different sexes, not just a union of two different people. While thousands of Massachusetts single moms and dads earn their Super Parent wings every day, to raise healthy children who become productive citizens, there is but one gold standard for which we should strive as a society... that every child be reared by a loving mother and father. the ultimate solution for Massachusetts's problems. School Shootings

...There have been more than 40 school shootings in the USA since 1990. If no effective action is taken, many more innocent children and teachers will die in the next few years. What has occurred in the last few decades that has increased school violence and has made school shootings more common? Examination of prior school shootings reveals that most of the offenders did not exhibit violent behaviors during their formative years, and many were excellent students. Their problems developed after treatment with antidepressants or other powerful medications These drug medications have helped millions of persons, but psychiatrists have known for years that a rare side effect involves development of suicidal ideation and in some cases homicidal tendencies. For example, SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressants obtained from pharmacies contain an insert that warns of “possible development of suicidal ideation”. There is considerable published literature that indicates young males are especially at risk for this side effect. Mainstream psychiatry’s “treatment of choice” for depression is use of SSRI antidepressants aimed at increasing activity of a neurotransmitter called serotonin in the brain, perhaps coupled with counseling. However, my biochemical studies of 3,600 depression patients show that 18% have elevated serotonin activity and are intolerant to SSRI antidepressants. In most cases these persons stop compliance after discovering that the drug makes their...

“Chardon High School Shooting”

...“Chardon High School Shooting” School shootings have become recurrent in the past 15 years. Though violence in young adults, teenagers, and children continues to rise, we like to think of schools as safe havens from the harsh reality of society. It is scary to think that the schools we feel our children are safe is now a concern and even a nightmare. We entrust the institutions to keep them safe and protect them from harm. It is disturbing and frightening when the violence is happening inside these institutions as well as outside. Parents have no place where they can feel their child/children are safe, but with them. Bullying, one of the major issues students face in school, has become a dilemma in today’s society which for many reasons has caused young adults, teenagers, and children to react negatively. T. J. Lane, age 17, is a suspect in the Chardon High School shooting, which took place in Chardon, OH. It was February 27th, 2012, at 7:30 am in the Chardon High School Cafeteria when Lane, whom at the time was attending Lake Academy, a school for at risk youth; fired ten shots from a .22- caliber handgun killing three students, Daniel Parmetor, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and injured two other students Joy Rickers, 18, and Nick Walczak, 17. After Lane fired the ten rounds killing the three students, he fled the building through the east door of the parking lot and into the woods. The gates do once again open at 2:00p.m where the students are able to leave the school and take the school busses home. But recently students have started to complain over the newly tighten security, the students are annoyed by the new morning checks, they have to wait in line for around 15-20 minutes before entering the school. Some students are also starting to feel more paranoid and unsafe then they did before the extra security was added. A student at Springfield Highschool says – “I feel like a wrongly convicted criminal entering a jail of potential mass murderers, and I can tell my classmates feel the same way I do, everyone is sticking to who they know”. School Shooting and Obesity

...America’s issues – School shooting and obesity First, I want to find out, why there are so many school shootings in USA. I think, it could be, if the child doesn’t have any parents, or if the child gets bullied. It could be the entertainment. The teenagers do what the TV shows and games do. They shoot someone or themselves. But isn’t it the same in Europe and the other continents? Let’s take a look on the statistics. United States of America / USA - 90 school shootings and 231 deaths, 13 of the 90 shootings did not result in any deaths. The first noticed shooting was in 1966. Europe - 16 school shootings and 91 deaths, 3 of the 16 shootings did not result in any deaths. The first noticed shooting was in 1913. Canada - 9 school shootings and 26 deaths, 1 of the 9 shootings did not result in any deaths. The first noticed shooting was in 1902. South America, Asia, and Australia - 8 school shootings and 29 deaths, all shootings resulted in at least 1 death. The first noticed shooting was in 1997 Okay, now we have agreed that, school shootings in USA are a bigger problem than the rest of the world. We have to go back in the history. Once upon a time, there were these people in Europe called “pilgrims” and they were afraid of being chased. So they all got in a boat and sailed to the New World where they wouldn't have to be scared ever again. But when they came to the New World, they saw some other people called “Indians.” They were scarred for them, so they shot them all. ......

School Shootings

...William Tubao Kaplan May 7, 2014 The issue of school shootings is important to students and should be to the general public. A school shooting involves an educational institution and a firearm being discharged at its facility. It may also refer to shootings near or on a school bus or near a school when it is in session. School shootings could occur anywhere in the world where firearms are available for access. These types of shootings in particular have generated a political dispute on stricter gun control. There are well known shootings in the United States, Europe, Canada, and other countries. The United States has the highest number of school related shootings. This paper will examine a few of those incidents and compare how the media and academic articles portray them. Overall, media articles show that coverage of school shooting events such as the ones that occurred at Virginia Tech University and Sandy Hook Elementary School tend to primarily focus on the number of victims, reactions of family, the misfortune of the event, as well as the mental state and background of the shootings. For an example, in the Los Angeles Times article “Gunman kills 20 kids, 6 adults at Connecticut elementary school”, they focus on the number of dead, imagery, and the emotion after the shooting such as parent’s reactions and children’s reactions. In the article they seem to dramatize the whole situation by saying things like “Evil visited this community today”. Although it is a......

To this day my uncle says it was his most memorable moment of his entire shooting career. Unfortunately, IU ended up getting rid of that old rifle range and all the fun that came along with it. But now I believe that it is time for the city of Bloomington to resurrect an indoor shooting range. After talking with some of the members of Martinsville’s gun club, they said that the demand for an indoor shooting range is very high. An indoor shooting range will allow the committee to learn and become educated about guns, gun safety, and self-defense. According to the nearest indoor rifle range to Bloomington is in Indianapolis. That’s entirely to far away. A shooting range would also provide people, especially college students, a temporary stress relief from school. Another reason why Bloomington needs a place like this is because guns in general been given a very bad connotation with them. The community is in dire need of a place where they can better understand guns and gun safety. Shooting an Elephant

...Shooting an Elephant: The Death of Free Will George Orwell’s essay, Shooting an Elephant, was first published in 1936 in the autumn issue of New Writing, a London periodical. According to Adrian De Lange, Shooting an Elephant is one of Orwell’s most famous essays (Bloom 9). It cannot be established whether or not it was an actual account of something that Orwell experienced, something he witnessed or if it is solely fictitious, but is accepted that this essay was written out of Orwell’s experiences while he was a member of the Imperial India Police Force in Burma, described by Orwell as, “five boring years” (Abrahams 194). There are many apparent and some not so apparent themes in this work. The harmful results of Imperialism, prejudice, and living by your own conscience are all valid and thought provoking themes. A theme that is also valid and beneficial to examine is the dangers of isolation and alienation and how those states can manifest in dangerous, even deadly ways. Isolation and alienation can be very damaging on the human spirit. That damage can lead to actions that do irreparable harm to an individual as well as a community. In Shooting an Elephant the narrator finds himself isolated because of his role as policeman in a foreign country and by the hostility and mistrust of the Burmese citizens he must police. This isolation leads to vulnerability and weakness when faced with mob pressure. When given into, peer pressure leads to......

School Shooting

...School Shootings Sandy Hook is one of the deadliest school shootings in the US history, resulting in the death of twenty six people (5). There have been seventy four school shootings only during the eighteen months after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012(4). Even though less than 1% of youth homicides take place in a school setting, it can cause long term damage to the students and school staff members(6). Students who witnessed school shootings are more likely to resist returning to school, have sleeping problems and to develop the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The federal government should interfere to protect our students and stop school shooting. One of the most common answer to the problem is strengthen gun laws (1). The solution suggests that making it harder to buy/register a gun will probably reduce school shooting as it will be harder for minors and psychos to obtain arms. People would be required to have a mental check, a background check, to lock up the gun and to undergo mandatory training before being allowed to own guns in their homes. This solution is built on the believe that guns are the main reason why school shootings happen. In reality, such a law will help reducing unintentioned crimes not the planned crimes. The law will help teaching the good citizens how to use guns correctly but criminals do not follow the law and they will find an illegal way to commit their crimes. The fact that committing a mass in a public place by a gun is......

American Shooting

...RUCHI Page 1 3/19/2011 American School Shooting’s Mass Shooting’s or multiple murders are people who have killed more then one victim. A mass murderer kills four or more people at one location during one continuous period of time, whether it is a few minutes or a period of days. An example of a mass murder would be Richard Speck, who killed eight student nurses in July of 1966 in a single night in their south Chicago Townhouse. Killers who murder several members of their family also fall under the mass murder category. Sociologists discover school shooters generally act on a perceived wrong done to them by others and view a climatic closure to the situation as the only way out. Frustrations accumulate into rage that motivates a spree. On August 1st 1966, Charles Whitman, a student at the University of Texas in Austin and a Marine, climbed twenty-seven stories up the university’s tower carrying a small arsenal. Upon reaching the top, he barricaded himself on the observation deck, after killing several people inside, and proceeded to randomly shoot people from there. According to Wikipedia, the sniper fire started shortly before noon and continued for several hours, until several police officers managed to gain entry to the observation deck, killing Mr. Whitman. It was later learned that Charles Whitman had complained about severe headaches and that he had a brain tumor, leading to much conjecture that this was the reason for his instability. Mr. Whitman, all......

School Shootings

...Professor Jeremy Fackenthal Philosophy 212 October 17, 2015 SCHOOL SHOOTINGS Tragic events like school shootings occur far too often in today’s society. There were 41 documented shootings in 2015 alone; resulting in many deaths and injuries. These crimes are senseless and if the cause for such actions are known, that still does not provide any comfort to the victim’s family behind the reason for committing such a horrible act. The mass shooting in Oregon at Umpqua Community College showed how heartless and evil one person can be. Students reported that Christopher Mercer entered classrooms and asked students about their religion, for those who acknowledged that they were Christian, he proceeded to shoot them in the head, while others who answered something other than Christian were shot elsewhere on the body, usually the leg.( Oct 2, 2015). I think that the shooter believed that he was doing some a good deed by shooting and killing these people. I think that this incident is in direct contrast to Christian natural law ethics. This law says that God give us commands that tell us how to act and what is right and wrong. Also that God gives us a capacity for reason, so that we can know on our own between what is right and what is wrong. Teleologist think that all humans are directed toward the highest good, which is God and that there is a good for each person which is happiness, which we are all trying to attain. But I do not think this was the case for the......

Mass School Shootings Should Not Get Media Attention

...Sally Ngo 3/23/2015 Professor Davis Mass School Shootings Should Not Get Media Attention “So our hearts are broken today -- for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain…” Obama delivered this speech to the solemn crowd about the horrific school shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Should the media be allow to broadcast school shootings? The media is an accomplice in almost every single public shoot out. Nobody realize the risks local television stations and radio stations are doing by broadcasting school shooting. Could the media be at fault for creating mass shooters? Yes, because when events like this occurs, all major television stations drops their current duties and focus their attention on the shooting, and suddenly it becomes a major media event. Because they want to be the one who has the breaking news first. And that is what the perpetrator is aiming for; to become famous. The perpetrator now a name for him or herself and instantly he/she becomes an overnight celebrity. All major television and radio stations will talk about nothing else but him/her, the spotlight will......

School Shootings

...School Shootings When I think of school shootings my mind immediately goes back to the Columbine High school shooting. This was the first school shooting that I was actually old enough to remember and understand. I still remember having a moment of silence for all of those involved. The New world encyclopedia states “Columbine High School shooting was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The incident drew worldwide attention. It led to widespread discussion over gun control and the prevention of school violence.” (Funk & Wagnalls) According to Wikipedia from 2011 to 2015 there has been 99 school shootings including grade schools, high schools, and colleges. This is a problem that needs more national attention in my opinion in order for there to be some form of change. The killers in school shootings (mass shootings) are what we call mass murderers, they typically want to send a message. It was stated the two students in Columbine sought revenge on bullies; this shooting/bombing was meant to send the message to them. According to a few articles I read they define their personalities as, “pseudocommando” these individuals kill in public during the daytime, plan their offense well in advance, and come prepared with arsenal of weapons, very similar to that of the school shooting killers. (Knoll) According to Warnick, the......

School Shootings

...SCHOOL SHOOTINGS I am going to write about the topic school shootings, based on the two texts “Warning” by Terry McCarthy and “It’s only me” by Nancy Gibbs, who both deal with an event which happened 10 years ago. A school shooting is an incident in which gun violence occurs at an educational institution. It most commonly describes an act committed by either students or intruders from outside school campus. They are to be distinguished from crowd-containment shootings enforced by law personnel and are also differentiated from other kinds of school violence, or terror attacks involving multiple weapons. The incident was committed by a, at the time, 15 year old boy called Charles Andrew Williams, Andy for short. He recently moved to Santee, California, a suburb with around 58.000 inhabitants. He was described as being a “good Christian boy” from rural Maryland. Andy was bullied at school, neglected by his father and rarely saw his mother. His parents divorced when he was 5, and things were not good at home. Even his own friends taunted him, but he just slacked it off, like he kept it all inside. His friends described him as being a “follower” and someone you could easily manipulate with. Andy started hanging out with a different group people called the “Grommits”, who were basically a couple of dope-smoking skateboarders. Andy’s friends noticed he started acting different – he ditched school and got into trouble. He talked openly about “pulling a Columbine” and......

Motivation Behind High School Shootings

...The Motivation Behind the Columbine High Shootings Every major spectacle carries with it the potential of a new way of looking at the past and implications of a future. Usually within a brief period after the event, a consensual "explanation" is fashioned through the news media and by the political pundits who occupy much of the space and time dedicated by the media to the event. Political pundits seated in front of the camera become part of the event, often becoming a part of the process of transforming an event in time to a spectacle. In this case, the event was the murder of 13 and wounding of 23 persons at the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The event took place on April 22, 1999 and, because of the subsequent suicide of the two teenage perpetrators, observers could only speculate on their motivation. While students were still hiding from the gunmen and while the police were still plotting their strategy, the media coverage began. Perhaps two impulses led to the coverage. First of all, the victims were not the children of the Hutus or East Timorese or even the Kosovos. These were "our" children and the parents our "friends." Their grief could have been ours. In fact, in a month plus a few days, five million dollars were donated to the survivors and the victim families even without there being a major fund-raising drive (Morning Edition, NPR, June 8, 1999). Secondly, the event had the earmarks of a media spectacle, that is, by transmogrifying the......
