Sarah Lee

...| 337 | | Conclusions from financial analysis: Sarah Lee’s profits are not high due to the fact that they are paying off their debt. Due to an exetremely high ROE and ROA Sarah Lee is still a great company to invest in. Question 7) Sarah Lee which remained without much focus on the more profitable portions of its company changed that strategy dramatically with its retrenchment plan in 2006. Sarah Lee making this move should increase their net profit margins dramatically. This retrenchment plan was set to increase corporate profits by getting rid of the unprofitable portions of Sarah Lee. Though a few of the portions that Sarah Lee divested were profitable the margins were just way too low to increase stockholders wealth. Focusing on the more profitable industries Sarah Lee will increase its stock dividends and the overall wealth and profitability of the business. Sarah Lee fully divesting the snack portion of their was a perfect decision considering the low margins, and the one- time tax break of seventy million was much better than the declining three million a year profit margin. However dropping its direct sales portion was a bad decision from a stockholder perspective because though declining it still had a huge profit margin. Though the new gain from divesting this portion was huge there was still a potential for sales greater than the margin that will be added to the more profitable portions of the company. Sarah Lee’s corporate profit margin will benefit......

Sarah

...As a white upper middle class teen living in an affluent neighborhood with authoritative parents, Sarah was expected to conduct herself in a certain manner than was a reflection of the morals and ideals held by both her parents. Sarah appears to be cloistered in her academic and socially acceptable sphere of her parents influence in the beginning until she starts high school and starts to experience a whole new set of peer influenced ideals. She is bombarded with anxiety of the socially acceptable norm and her hopes for further interactions with this new peer group that causes her cognitive dissonance with her belief system and parental rules. She was under continued stress from her friends’ insistence that she come to the party because it would be fun. Their constant reassurance that she would be missing out if she did not go was a catalyst to her decision. Sarah is internally conflicted with upholding her beliefs in obedience to her parent’s rules and those of her own wants in a more intrinsic need to be accepted by her peers. Sarah was willing to subject herself to her friends’ ideas and wants due to her introvert need of acceptance. Her friends influenced her to break her long held beliefs for a night of fun. Her yearning to be seen as one of them and not an individual lead her to be easily influenced. Sarah’s lack of real concern for her parent’s rule is a prime example of the nature versus nurture argument. She was hesitant for a while due to her conscious......

Sarah Talley and Wal-Mart

...1) Was this a Distributive or Integrative negotiation?- was it the optimum approach and why or why not. Sarah Talley and Wal-Mart are in a distributive negotiation as they only haggle about the price for 4th of July Watermelons (Lewicki, Saunders& Barry 2011). Rather than giving a “why” Wal-Mart persists with the position that the price is “too high” (Sebenius & Knebel 2006). In price-only negotiations only one party can win. Furthermore, there is a huge power difference due to Wal-Mart’s high position of strength which is based on their size (Lewicki et al. 2011). In the end these negotiations ended with Wal-Mart having to pay higher prices and with Frey Farm selling less volume at lower profits as they became a co-managed supplier of another Wal-Mart supplier. So it was not the best outcome. 2) Other than not doing the deal, list the BATNA’s Sarah had for this deal. According to Ury and Fisher (2011), BATNA’s are a method to improve your standing towards a stronger other party. It is a contingency plan. Sarah Talley must establish the lowest acceptable price (= her bottom line) to avoid the worst possible outcome. That makes it easier to resist pressure and temptation (Fisher& Ury 2011). Talley’s BATNAs include searching for other possible buyers. Then she might see that accepting Wal-Mart’s price might be better than losing them as a customer. She could also open a Frey Farm store to sell her products. Talley could wait with closing the deal until real......

There were two costly ongoing wars of 8 years, subprime mortgage crisis had taken hold and the nation was hurdling towards recession. Senator McCain represented the status quo of Republican Party which was believed to be responsible for the crisis at the time. Sarah Moore Grimke and Fredrick Douglass: a Fight for Rights

...Sarah Moore Grimke and Fredrick Douglass: A Fight for Rights America is the land of the free, but without abolitionists fighting for such freedom, there is no America. This essay is a comparison between Fredrick Douglass and Sarah Moore Grimke and how they fought for African American and women’s rights respectively. Fredrick Douglass was born into a life of slavery, but he learned to read and after a few attempts, escaped. He started out as an agent of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and from then, wrote books and newspapers promoting the cause. He later became a consultant of Abraham Lincoln. Sarah Grimke, on the other hand, grew up in as a daughter of a plantation owner. She had high goals and expectations but her family shot them down. Sarah and her sister fought for slavery and sexism and were expelled from the plantation. They were among the first to fight for women’s rights. Back in the 1800s, African Americans were slaves and treated like property. They were whipped, overworked, starved, and had no freedom. They were denied education and shot if trying to escape. On the other hand, women had very little rights. They were simply housewives who looked after the children. They were not allowed to aspire to anything and forced to simply support the husband. Back then, the worst person to be was an African American female. Some females were chosen as breeding moms and raped repeatedly to bear children to sell. If not, the master would call some women......

Jan Steen: the Marriage of Tobias and Sarah

...The marriage of Tobias and Sarah was a painting done by Jan Steen in 1673. The piece of art was done using oil, painted on a canvas material. Jan Steen, who lived between 1626 and 1679, also named the work The Marriage Contract. According to Nash, Orr and Stewart (84), the theme of the picture is drawn from the book of Tobit 3:7-17 in the Old Testament. It was done based on the status of marriage during that time. The picture shows a priest instituting a wedding. The two lovers are sitting by either side of the president, ready to sign the marriage contract forms; that is probably a short time after exchanging vows. There are also other witnesses, as the setting proves the more to be in a religious place of worship. Tobias marries Sara as her parents watch the signing of the marriage contract, as visitors take to the party. It is Sara’s seventh marriage due to possession by a demon. However, Raphael the Archangel casts out the devil (Nash, Orr and Stewart 84). The piece of art represented the kind of life present in the Netherlands during the Seventeenth Century. He aimed at exposing the knowledge he had about his surroundings. There are two main reasons that led Jan Steen to paint the painting. Firstly, Steen spent much of his life in Leiden since he belonged to the Rhetoricians. Secondly, he wanted to expose the positive aspect of the community he belonged to. He achieved this by redesigning some of the previous paintings and adding a positive aspect to them. For instance...

...Positivism means “scientific” and positivist methodologies argue it’s possible and desirable to study social behaviour in ways similar to those used by natural scientists to study behaviour in the natural world. Positivism A basic principle is that social systems consist of structures that exist independently of individuals; they represent behaviour at the institutional level of society and people experience structures as forces that push us to behave in ways that shape our individual behavioural choices. Example: The rules of language structure the way we socially interact. Systems Actions The forces shaping social behaviour can be discovered using similar methods to those used in sciences such as Physics - systematic observations that create highly reliable knowledge, organised and tested using something like Popper’s HypotheticoDeductive model of research. Study of the causes of behaviour (social structures) rather than their effects (the different choices people make). Structures are real and objective forces; although they can’t be seen, their effects can be (empirically) observed. Reality Methods Quantitative methods are generally favoured because they allow for the collection of factual data. Objectivity Facts The researcher should not directly interact with the people they are studying since this might influence their behaviour (non-participant observation is acceptable, but participant observation is more......

...Managing a Daily Teaching Schedule After searching the web for tips to assist with time management, I came to realize the most common stress a teacher carries is dealing with several papers whether they are test, forms, assignments, or anything else a teacher needs in the class. TIP # 1: Use colored folders to file papers: Select different colors for each subject or for each Period of the day. I feel like that is an important tip because if I am going to have the same color for each class, I could place a paper in the wrong subject and spend hours trying to find that paper. I might even have to do it over because I no longer have it to make copies. This can cause a lot of unnecessary stress and take up valuable time. TIP # 2: Designate one day for every month to organize (for example, the third Tuesday of the month) as “filing day”. Use it to file all the papers that have accumulated on your desk during the month. This tip can be a life saver at some point because day after day builds up more papers on my desk and in the file cabinet that I do not need. Furthermore, I can lose track of assignments and possibly lose an important paper for a student. Organizing can help me keep track of my daily papers and stay ahead of the game. TIP # 3: Make a list of all the things that you need to get done in a given time period (day, week, month, etc.) Realistically approximate the amount of time each task will take to complete.. Prioritize the tasks in order of......
