From day one we've defined our relationship being what we made it and made sure to keep the outsiders out. You became my protector thinking i need not one. You became my thought of reason when I could not decide you brought the purpose to this relationship which gave me something to fight for and someone to cherish life for me became a routine and I wasn’t living to make myself happy you taught me how to in this relationship and I thank you. not only do I love the fact that you love me too much I love the fact that God created someone just for me at this time, for these moments and memories that we've shared...In the being of our relationship you told me that you were a very simple man then I did not understand yes you had expectations yes you demanded the basics of a relationship but most importantly was communication. This was something I knew and cared little about now I see why, the more I communicated to you and the more you communicated to me I seen the differences that our relationship had compared to others.

That Thursday when I needed you I felt so alone. That day I felt something wasn’t right besides us not talking I knew something was about to happen. I went home thinking nothing of it I sat there debating if I should leave to go to your school and surprise you but my pride and stubbornness had got the best of me. Replaying the events that took place that night still haunts me. The very thought of me not supposed to be at home but with you will never leave I blamed myself and then that’s when everything went…...

...Professor Worthington English 102 23 September 2012 How do Poems Travel?” Words, thoughts and ideas are hidden away beneath the realms of a poet’s subconscious (Meyer 1166). A poet himself, when requested to analyzetheir own writing and discovering wherehis poetry derives from, is like making a child sit still for the duration of a photo shoot. Poet Billy Collins describes writing about ones work, is like switching rooms along with all the contents in it (1166). Poems are not premeditated by their authors; instead the poet engages his writing utensil allowing the poem to guide their thoughts ;( Meyer 1166) spilling them onto the paper before him. His hand glides through the lines of the paper, never dictating his pencil, (Garbett, “Billy Collins”). Collins willfully submits to his work (1166). Writing poetry is not controlled; a poet’s thoughts begin in the mind and become drafted to paper before us. As readers we see the final product (Meyer 1167). If one knows the end of a dramatic movie, in a sense makes us not want to watch it. What is the point? You know how it ends. The poet does not want a predestinated agenda of their vacations, seeing the unknown, exploring the surrounding and even goingbeneath the surface of find a real meaning is a way poets look at writing. Mishaps are not always unfortunate. Mistakes can thrive into something better and more beautiful (Garbett, “Billy Collins”). When mistakes are made in writing lead the writer a drift from the original......

...What is Poetry Becoming-Concrete, Visual, Digital, Performance, Experiential? The title of this article caught my eye because I feel that poetry is slowly fading away. If poetry is dead, who killed it? Poetry is becoming distinct in the school system; it is important for teachers to introduce poetry to students. I think poetry is abstract rather than concrete. The author points out key facts about what makes poetry good. Some people view poetry as always rhyming and others view poetry as relaying messages. Good poetry is one that is created by a knowledgeable and skilled author. As I mentioned before, I think poetry is more abstract but the author seems to think otherwise. In the article, it states that there are many forms of poetry such as word art, concrete poetry, visual poetry, pattern poetry, visual riddles and puzzle poetry. The author states the perception of concrete poetry has been around since the 1950s when a Brazilian concrete poetry manifesto was published. Although the term is modern, the idea of using letter arrangements to enhance the meaning of a poem is an old. Visual poetry is art in which the visual arrangement of text, images and symbols are important in conveying the intended effect of the work. I think poetry is an emotional expression. This article expands my knowledge base because it introduces me to an artistic form of communication called poetry. Poetry is all about communicating thoughts, feelings and emotions. Poetry is......

...Structure of Chinese poetry The structure of Chinese poetry is very complicated. It is hard to learn but so beautiful to read. Chinese poetry includes various versions of Chinese language, including Classical Chinese, Standard Chinese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Yue Chinese. Some kind of Chinese language is so rare and old that I have not even learnt. And Chinese poetry has a long history which started from Western Zhou till now. So Chinese poetry can provides an exceptional platform for both public and private expressions of deep emotion, offering a rare vantage point for students and observers to view the inner life of Chinese writers across more than two millennia. Chinese poetry was divided to two primary types, which were Classical Chinese poetry and Modern Chinese poetry. Classical Chinese poetry is traditional Chinese poetry written in Classical Chinese which typified by certain traditional forms, or modes, and certain traditional genres. Classical Chinese poetry was divided to a lot of kind of poetries, which include Classic of Poetry, Chuci, Yuefu, Six dynasties poetry, Tang poetry, Song poetry, Yuan poetry. The poems of Classic of Poetry tend to have certain typical patterns in both rhyme and rhythm, to make much use of imagery, often derived from nature. The poems of the Chuci anthology are mostly of the seven-syllable form, and are formed in a unique way. Lines generally consist of three syllables. Yuefu are Chinese poems composed in a folk song style. Six......

...INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY Poetry: for and against Submitted by: Arusha tufail Reg# 734 POETRY: FOR AND AGAINST POETRY: The word poetry is taken from a Greek word poieo which means I create. It is an art form in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. It consists largely of oral or literary works in which language is used in a manner that is felt by its user and audience to differ from ordinary prose. BRIEF HISTORY OF POETRY: Poetry as an art form predates literacy. In preliterate societies, poetry was frequently employed as a means of recording oral history, storytelling (epic poetry), genealogy, law and other forms of expression or knowledge that modern societies might expect to be handled in prose. Some writers believe that poetry has its origins in song. Most of the characteristics that distinguish it from other forms of utterance—rhythm, rhyme, compression, intensity of feeling, the use of refrains—appear to have come about from efforts to fit words to musical forms. However, in the European tradition the earliest surviving poems, the Homeric and Hesiodic epics, identify themselves as poems to be recited or chanted to a musical accompaniment rather than as pure song. ARGUMENTS ON POETRY: The Plato has criticized poetry as an imitative art in his book Republica. Plato narrated in his book that to have an ideal state, it is necessary to ban all imitative art forms as they......

...Denise Burnside Assignment 4 ENG 125 Instructor diGualco 2/11/2013 Poetry is unique way to express life challenges with a little rhythm and rhyme here and there. The way poems a rouse feeling and imagination is what makes them so resourceful. There are so many things about a poem that could have meaning. The perfect words for a poem could take imagination on a journey. The poem that caught my attention is “Mirror” by Sylvia Plath. “Poetry has a compressed quality; the language of poetry refines ideas and feelings, making them both incisive and penetrating. Poets are always in search of just the right word, just the right tone (Clugston, 2010)”. “This search produces the beauty and dignity that have always characterized poetry. As well, this artful process sometimes produces witty assertions wrapped in clever phrases or humor. When original thoughts of this kind have a memorable quality, they are called aphorisms or maxims (Clugston, 2010).” The content of this poem is what caught my attention and aphorisms (clever phrases). I really like this poem because it holds so much truth. My understanding was that, this was simply a mirror telling the story of its purpose and survival. I think the mirror represented certainty. It's the only place that you can find unbiased truth. We tell untruth to ourselves, others lie to us and so I think that what Plath is trying to represent is that when you finally do see the truth...

...Nature of Poetry: Genres and Subgenres Introduction, Out of Chaos Order and Pattern formed by Rhyme: Order and Pattern formed by Rhythm: Major Types • Epic • Narrative • Lyrical The student should also recall that many of these terms can be found in Prof. Rearick's literary glossary at this link. Introduction, Out of Chaos Poetry is as old as the human heart. Long before there were libraries, before people were writing down lines, before there were even cities, commerce or any manifestation of what we think of as culture, there was poetry. More than one critic has noted that literary works are, in some way, an attempt by writers to take the unacceptable chaos of human life and bring order into it. An overt reference to this is Wilde's famous observation given through the voice of Miss Prism, describing her own three volume novel: "The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means." (The Importance of Being Earnest, Act II, Emphasis Mine). To Wilde fiction tried to take the chaotic quality of the unfairness of life and turn it right. Perhaps Poetry is pleasant to human ears because it attempts to the most random of things, human speech, and tries to bring it into some sort of order and pattern. Order and Pattern formed by Rhyme: Most students think that poetry is made when words are brought together which have the same kind of sound at the end of them, but this is only one type of the many kinds of rhyme. Old English poetry, for......

We Real Cool Poetry Analysis

...Thompson ENWR 106 March 9th, 2015 Tarnished Gold Chicago poet Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African- American female poet to win the Pulitzer Prize and went on to serve as the U.S Poet Laureate from 1985-1986. Among Brooks’ many works is the short poem; “We Real Cool” which sums up the reality that youths will have to face if they lose school. “We Real Cool” was written during the Civil Rights Movement in 1959, a period of great segregation. In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to segregate schools in the case of Brown vs Board of Education, however segregation was still prominent in society and this frustrated many African- Americans. Aside from separation, the effects of Segregation caused a lot of black youths to lose sight of their role in society and what it meant to have a bright future. By being told that they do not belong numerous times, being victims of prejudice and being treated as inferior they began to impact their outlook on life. Consistently being told that they have no future led youths to believe that it was nothing more than a false pretense, as seen in the boys who seem to be struggling with identity. Anyone who has ever played hooky can relate to “We Real Cool”, instead of attending school seven young men decide to hang out at a bar and play pool. Brooks is attempting to send a message through her poem and she accomplishes this through the use of symbolism and word choice. According to Gwendolyn Brooks, one day......

...Visual poetry is literary verse written on the page with intentional form to add meaning to the poem. The form may take on a recognizable shape, or may use a free formed pattern to create a new rhythm when reading the poem out loud. These shapes and rhythms are typically tied to the central ideas and themes contained within the poems, and often serve to reinforce those concepts. Visual poetry is poetry or art in which the visual arrangement of text, images and symbols is important in conveying the intended effect of the work. Confusingly, it is sometimes referred to as concrete poetry, a term that predates visual poetry. When I Was a Baby When I was a baby  I cried  spreading my voice  through the house,  beckoning for a response. When I cried  My blue pajamas  wiggled, squirmed  and turned  against the rails of the crib prison When I was a baby,  my small hands  grasped the air  as I inhaled,  gathering one more breath  to cry out  for a meal and a cuddle When my tones  reached through the air  to my parents  they would finally wake When I cried, they'd come to me  I'd stop crying,  look innocently  upward  and  smile as I was  lifted into caring arms  When I was a baby Visual poetry uses the page as a canvas to visually represent the themes, subjects, or sentiments of words in a variety of shapes and forms. The beauty of the visual format lies in the poet’s ability to mark, prescribe, or record process; the replication of shape; or the......

...Poetry (from the Greek "poiesis" — "ποίησις" — with a broad meaning of a "making", seen also in such terms as "hemopoiesis"; more narrowly, the making of poetry) is a form of literary art which uses the aesthetic qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning. POETRY Poetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Early poems evolved from folk songs such as the Chinese Shijing, or from a need to retell oral epics, as with the Sanskrit Vedas, Zoroastrian Gathas, and the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ancient attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively-informative, prosaic forms of writing. From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more generally regarded as a fundamental creative act employing language. Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretation to words, or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, metaphor, simile and metonymy[1] create a......
