Monopoly Market - Research in Taxi Services in Mumbai

...Extended Essay Economics Research Question: Does Meru Cabs have a monopoly amongst long distance commuters in South Mumbai? Traditional Cabs Mega Word count: 3,996 Abstract Through this essay, I wish to investigate the market structure in which Meru, a privatized taxi service provider that networks throughout the city of Mumbai, functions in. As the popularity of Meru continues to grow rapidly, it invoked a few rather interesting questions; what kind of market structure does it comply to? “Does Meru Cabs have a monopoly amongst long distance commuters in South Mumbai?” Meru are one of the first to introduce quality taxi services in Mumbai, and cater to both North and South Mumbai residents. To investigate the market structure, many forms of data collection were considered. These include a survey with forty-five people amongst which half were from my building and locality (South Mumbai) and friends and family residing in the north. Also to further explore, I carried out a tabulated observation at the Mumbai Domestic Airport (North Mumbai) to tally mark the number of travelers traveling in different kinds of taxis and took an interview with Meru. The data obtained has been analyzed and represented with the help of diagrams such as pie charts, tables, and graphs. The market structure of taxi providers in Mumbai have characteristics of an oligopoly, however, Meru appear to be reaping the benefits of a monopoly. Nevertheless, the market structure deems the......

On this site, the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired, beginning the campaign for independence. On the morning of April 19, 1775, seventy-seven minutemen fought their first skirmish against the British (Tour Lexington, 2013). Today, Lexington continues to honor its place in American history with numerous statues, monuments and historical sites (Tour Lexington, 2013). Lexington’s historical significance provides an opportunity to capture tourism from both domestic and international visitors. Lexington is a mid-sized town of just over 32,000 people situated within the Greater Boston Area in Massachusetts (DemographicsNow, 2012). With families occupying 90% of all households within the town and a highly-ranked school system, Lexington attracts wealthy professional residents (Berg, Biedron, Bueller, Horst, 2011). AUTOMAKERS NEED TO KNOW! Surprisingly 6 per cent of all US car sales are made to people 16 to 24 years old. Because this is a sizeable target market segment, automobile companies have spent millions on design and advertising trying to win this segment’s brand loyalty. However, the distinctive stylish designs created for the Pontiac Aztek, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Toyota Echo failed to interest young potential auto buyers. Why did the cars fail to attract buyers? CNW Marketing Research studied young auto buyers to learn what really motivates them to purchase. They found that the average price of autos purchased by this group was only $15,000. The research found that young people were interested in style, but first wanted low price, good value and long warranties. Was the research correct? Sample Proposed Research Topic.

...Proposed Research Topic: A research project discovering whether or not individuals with disabilities have higher rates of unemployment Purposes: The goal of this proposal is to see if there is a correlation between higher unemployment rates and disability status. This project is important because according to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, everyone should have an equal opportunity to work. If there is a large correlation between disability status and unemployment rates, then we must question why that may be if we have laws giving them equal opportunity. Scope: I will analyze data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for years 2009-2012. The variables will be disabled/not-disabled. The persons included in the data were population age 16 and over, who are not in (prisons, long-term care hospitals, nursing homes, and active duty in the Armed Forces), that resides in the 50 States and the District of Columbia. I plan to conduct a hypothesis test to draw an inference from the two samples and create a histogram to show the raw data. The possible limitation in the data is that it was collected by a voluntary response mail in poll. That means that only those that chose to participate was included in the data. In the survey, there is a set of 6 questions where if the response is “yes” the individual is defined as disabled. There is a chance that the questions might be answered inaccurately if the question is not read properly. There are also many people......

Proposed Laws and Human Services

...A proposed law in several states that impacts the delivery of human services is requiring mandatory drug testing to be done for those who receive welfare from the government. States have proposed drug testing of applicants and recipients of public welfare benefits since federal welfare reform in 1996. It began to pick up speed in 2011. At least 18 states introduced proposals or had carryover bills that would require drug screening or testing for public assistance applicants and/or recipients in 2014.This has actually passed in some states, but it has been difficult for some to pass this. Unsurprisingly, there is an outrage by those who receive welfare. There are those that say that if you can be drug tested for a job, you should for welfare because you are still receiving money, like you would in a job. I think that the most reliable resource available to learn more about the implications of this law would be by reading the proposed legislation. Being aware of what is being done and said will highly help. Just standing on the sidelines and not actually acting is what can make the effects worse by doing nothing. Also, by having a meeting or some type of communication between the head of the organization and the senator that is proposing this legislation to help clarify any issues and even help to improve on the legislation that is being proposed. Other reliable resources could be other agencies that have dealt with similar laws in their areas, and how they coped with......

Proposed Research

...Proposed Research Topic: It will examine how the weather conditions affect the usage of the different car models offered by the car sharing service. Purposes: For Car Sharing Models it is very important to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. One factor which influences the demand of the customers could be the weather. This question has to be answered to react on the customers needs. Due to the fact that the competitive situation in this branch is under pressure it is very important for Car Sharing Models to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. To achieve a high acceptance of the customer the planning of the buying department has to be adjusted to the customer needs. The result should answer the question if the customers choose cars by considering the weather conditions. The result could be that customers are using more of convertibles when the sun is shining. Another result could be that the people are using the X1 more when it is snowing because this model has an all-wheel drive. Moreover the customers could use the other BMW models less when it is snowing, because the rear wheel drive is less comfortable and less save on a snowy underground. Another result could be that the type of the vehicle does not depend on the weather. Saifullah Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Received 8 March 2012; accepted 26 July 2012 Abstract This study was conducted to determine the comfort conditions of Pharmaceutical Laboratories in Malaysia. Four laboratories were selected as investigation sites. The Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system of the laboratories must be designed for providing good indoor air quality (IAQ) to the workers in the laboratory and keeping the expensive equipment in good condition. For the investigations, a number of measurement equipments were used to obtain the IAQ data of the laboratories (i.e. dry bulb temperature, air humidity, air flow velocity, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, etc.). Some random subjective assessments on the workers in the laboratories were made to acquire information on the workers such as their thermal comfort rating, activity level and their clothing con-ditions. In this study, air temperature for Laboratories 1, 3 and 4, are 22.38, 20.53 and 19.50 LC, respectively, slightly below the ASH-RAE recommended air temperature. Besides, the total......

[1] The informal sector, with its enterprising individuals and groups, can be seen as counterbalancing cure to many ill effects of globalization. [2] Firstly, the informal sector absorbs all the victims of globalization—displaced workers, forced retirees, educated unemployed and many more. While the informal sector cannot offer jobs, it can offer income opportunities. In this sense, the informal sector is itself a safety net. Secondly, the informal sector cushions the impact of globalization on the surviving formal sector. It provides a counterbalance that reduces the impact of high inflation and real income fluctuation on fixed wage earners. The informal sector supplies cheap labor, cheap raw materials, and cheap domestic services to the wage sector. The......

Market Research

...Market research is the process of collecting valuable information to help you find out if there is a market for your proposed product or service. The information gathered from market research helps budding entrepreneurs make wise and profitable business decisions. The key to any successful business is to understand what it is that your customers want and giving this to them in a way that is profitable for you. purpose of market research Gain a more detailed understanding of consumers’ needs – Marketing research can help firms to discover consumers’ opinions on a huge range of issues, e.g., views on products, prices, packaging and recent advertising campaigns. Reduce the risk of product/business failure – There is no guarantee that any new idea will be a commercial success, but accurate and up-to-date information on the market can help a business make informed decisions, hopefully leading to products that consumers want in sufficient numbers to achieve commercial success. Proposed Research

... Developing Research Proposals Handout Prepared by Ted Zorn, University of Waikato This is a handout I often give to students when I expect them to provide a research proposal for a course project. That is, it’s intended for fairly brief proposals, not a prospectus for a masters or doctoral thesis. It gives students an example of the sort of thing I want, plus some commentary (in italics) about what I’m expecting in each section. I sometimes change the particular example given, in order to encourage them to think about particular kinds of projects. For instance, the example provided here was used in a Leadership Communication course. I’ve used the same format, but a different research project example, for a course on Organisational Communication Technology. Feel free to adapt it to your purposes. Research Proposal Proposed Research Topic: Purposes: Alvesson (1996) claims that a situational approach enables leadership to be viewed and studied as “a practical accomplishment” (p. 476) rather than starting with a conceptualisation of leadership as whatever the appointed leader does. This approach seems particularly well suited to self-managing teams (SMTs), in which leadership is presumably shared. In this project, I will explore how members of a self-managing team enact leadership in their regular team meetings. In particular, I will focus on how SMT members influence the direction of the team as well as the relationships and identities of individual members and......

Carter Cleaning Service

...MGT 3375 October 20, 2011 Carter Cleaning Compnay 1- It’s great that Mr. Carter recognizes that there is diversity in the work place but just because you have a substantial number of women and minorities working for you doesn’t cancel you out from being looked upon as being discriminatory. The meer fact that the minority applicants are being asked questions that the other applicants are not being asked is grounds for discrimination. Unless the position that the employee is being hired for warrants these questions they should not be asked questions about their families or arrest records. 2- EEOC guidelines require that the workplace environment is free from sexual harassment. With that being said, it is the employers responsibility to resolve this situation as soon as possible. The appropriate way to approach this situation is to first advise the employee to address the harrasseer and let them know that their behavior is inappropriate and unwanted. As their employer, I would issue a statement making sure that everyone understood that this type of behavior is not ok and that any violaters will be punished. I would explain to my employees the channels to go through to report it and provide protection for retaliation. 3- According to the Equal Pay act of 1963, the 73 year old that is being paid less than the younger worker, though it seems morally wrong, does not violate the act. In this particular case, I would try to create a supervisory position for this employee...
