Q2. Wendy’s International, a hamburger chain, is losing sales to competition. They know they are in maturing business where competition (McDonald, Burger King, Roy Rogers etc.) is very high and buyer’s power is high. Currently Wendy gets order by phone and by walk-in customers. They have added chicken to their menu but that has not helped in increasing sales. All the companies in the fast food industry are selling similar products: chicken sandwiches, beef sandwiches, fresh salad, fries and so on. Customers can always turn to other hamburger stores if Wendy’s is no longer attractive to them. * The case doesn’t mention about Wendy’s suppliers but suppliers’ power can have a significant impact on Wendy’s profits. An efficient supply chain can help to lower inventory costs and increase product quality. Based on these analyses, I will recommend the following strategies for Wendy’s: * Strengthen Customer and Supplier Intimacy. An extended supplier chain management (SCM) system can help to cut inventory costs and allow scalability. The Bancroft Chemical is required by law to store information on its employee' medical histories for 25 years. Currently, employee medical claim forms are stored in files in document retention centers, where they are difficult to access. John Port, plant manager wanted some medical information on an employee but got two different reports for the same employee. It turned out that there were two employees with the same last name. Recently some medical information was leaked and the employee was denied insurance due to pre existing conditions. You have been hired by the Bancroft Company to help them solve this problem explain how information technology (be specific about which one) can help Bancroft fulfill its requirements and provide quick access to information. I will recommend Bancroft Chemical to use a cloud-based database to solve its current problem.
“Cloud Computing refers to a model of computing that provides access to a shared pool of computing resources over a network.” (Laudon and Laudon, Management Information Systems-Managing the digital firm, Twelfth edition, Pg 170) The biggest advantage of cloud computing is in storage. Bancroft now stores all the employees’ medical histories in files in the document retention centers and it is required by law to store those records for 25 years. Consider about the massive amount of files, the place needed for storage, and the difficulties in accessing files, cloud computing can be the best solution since all resources like employees’ medical record can be storage over the network; in other word, storage costs can be saved.
An employee medical record database should be established for Bancroft Chemical. In the process of establishing database, duplicate reports, incomplete reports, or inconsistent reports should be removed. Although it may take a lot of time and effort to set up the database and to migrate all the data to the cloud, it will help to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Bancroft Chemical in the long-term. Bancroft Chemical also mentioned that some recent medical information was leaked and since the employees’ medical histories are sensitive personal data, I will recommend Bancroft Chemical to use a private cloud computing system. “A private cloud is a proprietary network or a data center that ties together servers, storage, netweorks, data, and applications as a set of virtualized services that are shared by uses inside a company.” (Laudon and Laudon, Management Information Systems-Managing the digital firm, Twelfth edition, Pg 183) Bancroft Chemical can also migrate some less critical data to the cloud at first and then some more sensitive records as clouds become more secure.

Ethical issues are involved for both Mr. Smith and the P&G Company.
On the employees’ side, Mr. Smith is creating ethical problems for the protection of intellectual property of his company. It is irresponsible for Mr. Smith to browse non-work related website on company’s time. There are potential risks of receiving web bugs, which could be harmful to the users’ computer and database. The corporation’s intellectual property will be at risk if computer crime or computer abuse occurs. Employees should be notified of those risks and stay away from any websites that may contain harmful information to the company.
On the company’s side, P&G is creating ethical problems for the protection or individual privacy. It is obvious that P&G is using employee monitoring to check employees’ web usage and created a profile about individuals and their behaviors. Although the company may have the rights to do so, it should notify all of its employees before it applies employee monitoring; a written ethical code may be helpful in this case.

Global supply chain is more challenging and complex than a domestic one. Global supply chains usually span greater geographic distances and time differences than domestic supply chains and have participants from a number of different countries. One example is a case such as Phar-Mor which fabricated their inventory in most of their retail stores in order to conceal a massive fraud by the leading executives. Or the Waste Management scandal which did things such as capitalizing items which should have been left on the income statement in order to increase their assets. Lastly, Enron, which had such an elaborate scheme in place that it was hard to decipher and was only uncovered when the CEO stepped down. It is not to say that SOX could have prevented these scandals but instead it helped create this act that will help set place 11 laws or sections to help deter such elaborate frauds in future leading companies. ...Fraud Case on Phar-Mor, Inc. Introduction Phar-Mor, Inc. was one of the top ten deep discount store that grew rapidly in a short period of time during the 1980s. Phar-Mor pricing strategy was to sell products at an even greater discount than other deep discount stores like Wal-Mart. While the practice of selling at such low cost attract customers, Phar-Mor was experiencing losses. The prices were cut so low that profit would not be generated. And this was how the fraud began. To prevent the truth from damaging Phar-Mor’s appearance, the president and other top management employees decided to cook the books by using creative accounting practices that were against the rules of GAAP and GAAS. Other than that, there was also an embezzlement of cash by the president and CFO of Phar-Mor. When the fraud was finally uncovered, investors have lost over one billion dollars, and the fraud was estimated to be over $500 million. Soon afterwards, Phar-Mor had to file for bankruptcy. November 2, 2010 Executive Summary After nearly four years since its founding, Wil-Mor, the joint venture (JV) between American-owned parts manufacturer, Wilson, and Japanese-owned manufacturer, Morota – is fast approaching a crossroads. The JV was formed in 1993 to support the “transplant” model of assembling Japanese-designed cars in the United States. From an American business mindset, Japanese automakers like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan had a fiercely, almost irrational, loyalty to their suppliers. This loyalty, coupled with the growing market share of Japanese cars and increased domestic supplier competition, made the Wil-Mor JV a natural outgrowth for longstanding licensing partners Wilson and Morota. However, Wil-Mor’s first 18 months was fraught with unexpected setbacks. Neither parent company anticipated the leadership characteristics required to harmonize cultural differences and Wil-Mor’s initial leadership proved so divisive that it had to be removed after a year into operations. The success was unusually rapid and even had Sam Walton, of Wal-Mart, worried; and in July 1992 Mickey Monus (President), David Shapira (CEO), and Patrick Finn (CFO) felt like they were on top of the world. They had 25,000 employees and sales of more than $ 3 billion. Accounting issues: Phar-Mor bankruptcy was one of the largest private companies in 1992. The fraud was executed primarily by upper management from the President, CFO, and COO to name a few. Phar-Mor executives embezzled money by using it for personal use and creating the World Basketball League. Phar-Mor accounting issues included falsifying financial statements. The false financial statements were submitted to banks and allowed them to increase the credit line from $435 million to $600 million. Phar-Mor defrauded Corporate Partners, Chemical Bank, Westinghouse Credit Corporation, and Westminster National Bank for a total of $517 million dollars (Mintz & Morris).
