Personal Responsibility for Educational Success Since we were kids, our family and society teach us how to be behave in a responsible manner. They teach us values in order to feel, think and act with respect for ourselves and others. The objective of this learning is to generate independent and productive individuals that are responsible for their actions and that they work every day to improve, contribute and succeed in all aspects of their lives (family, work, education and community). For me, personal responsibility is the accountability for all activities and decisions we made every day, accepting the consequences that come from those actions and how it impact those around you. Ruyter (2002) states that personal responsibility is to be responsible to themselves and to the necessities and safety of the society. In the present time, studies reveal that people tend to refuse take responsibility for their actions and blame others for their mistakes (Doherty, 1998). This is why is very important that families and schools encourage children, adolescents and young adults to practice personal responsibility in every aspect of their life (Mergler, 2007). Every member of the society has a responsibility with the community, with family, with school and for every action they perform. Each area involves a different set of accountabilities and duties, and each change with every new circumstances that arises. For example, as a husband or wife you have certain responsibilities with your relationship, with the kids, the house and with the bills. As a worker you have to be accountable for your duties and projects, to be on time in a daily basis and to respect and work with your co-workers. When it relates to education, personal…...

Personal Responsibility and College Success

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal Responsibility and College Success When a student makes the decision to commit to a college education, they must be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizational skills and time management, goal setting, and follow through. Frequently students fall short on these responsibilities and attempt to blame others for their failures. The student must realize that they alone are responsible for reaching their academic goals. The best way to predict how a student will perform in college is by using their high school grade point average (Haskins, 2009). The grade point average is a good indicator of the students’ level of commitment and personal responsibility toward their education. Students who have performed well in high school show that they have the potential ambition and personal responsibility to excel in the realm of higher education. Personal responsibility can be defined in many different ways to different people. In Ron Haskins article written in 2009, The Sequence of Personal Responsibility, he states that “When applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity” (paragraph 3). Another view is that personal responsibility requires self awareness of a person toward their personal success (Mwangi, 2012).......

Even though teachers are there to teach me, implementing my personal responsibility values will ensure my college success by using solid time management strategies, identifying my goals, and managing my stress. Definition of Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility, to me, means being aware of my commitments, knowing what my resources are to follow through with those commitments, understanding my deficits, exploring ways to better them, and being active with my goal planning. My management of time and stress will be the two biggest hurdles to overcome. When I am considering how best to manage my time, I look at four specific areas: structuring time for my schoolwork, using an effective calendar, scheduling family time, and managing my stress. Dave Ellis(2011), author of Becoming a Master Student, summed it up so well by saying, “Time is an equal opportunity resource. All of us, regardless of gender, race, creed, or national origin, have exactly the same amount of hours in a week. No matter how famous we are, no matter how rich or poor, we get 168 hours to spend each week-no more, no less.” Relationship between Personal Responsibility and College Success The first...

...Fallon Cooper Gower GEN/200 April 30, 2012 University of Phoenix Personal Responsibility and College Personal responsibility varies for each individual, but for me it encompasses all areas of my life. It determines how I choose to live my life via my moral compass. Education and personal responsibility are two aspects that can sometimes be hard for people to take control of. It is much easier to point a finger when things do not go as planned, such as failing a test or turning an assignment in late. In order for students to be successful in college, they must practice personal responsibility by holding accountability for their actions, identifying educational goals, and using time management skills effectively. I have made mistakes in my college career, and I do not always blame who I should. Sometimes, I would much rather blame the teacher for failing a test or not agreeing with my grades when either turning my assignments late or not turning them in at all. The truth is that I should hold myself accountable for my actions. It was up to me to get the work done and to turn in the assignments. It is also my personal responsibility to study for the tests and to put in the correct amount of time each week in order to pass the course. I appreciate the teachers that do not give in the rules that they have made, and those who hold us students to our lack of responsibility. Learning includes making mistakes, but if we do not learn from our mistakes then that is solely our......
