English 102 Research Paper assignment

NOTE: You may basically combine your first two essays and add the research element for this assignment.

1. Choose one of the short stories already studied in class and the assigned play. 2. Write a 5-6 page literary research paper that compares and contrasts two characters in these works. For example, you could compare and contrast Dee Johnson to Biff or Willy or Phoenix Jackson to Linda. There are many more combinations to choose from!

3. Have your topic approved by your instructor!

4. IMPORTANT: You should have a minimum of five (5) sources for this paper. They must be literary sources. In other words, the only sources you should get from the Internet should be those from credible sites such as those available through the CCTC library databases. (Note: Wikipedia, Spark’s Notes, Cliff Notes are NOT acceptable sources for college papers!) Since you already have a short story and a play as primary sources, you only need to find three (3) secondary sources. COPIES OF THESE SOURCES WITH THE PORTIONS YOU HAVE QUOTED OR PARAPHRASED HIGHLIGHTED MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE PAPER.

5. This paper must by typed following MLA style, including a Works Cited Page, using information from sources such as the Purdue Owl or Noodblebib as a guide.

6. Final grade will be based on content, writing skill, grammar/mechanical errors, quality of research, ability to integrate research, and correct use of MLA style.

Tips for writing this paper:

1. Think of two characters that seem similar to you—List characteristics that are alike. 2. Consider the major DIFFERENCE between the characters/themes—This paper REQUIRES you to CONTRAST as well as compare. 3. Remember to distinguish between character traits and situations—for example, poverty is a situation; how a character deals with poverty may be a character trait. 4. PROVE your points with research—be sure to use a balance of primary and secondary sources. Use your secondary sources well—simply pulling one quote from a source in order to meet a requirement is not adequate. 5. Avoid simply retelling the story! Structure your paper around the character traits you are discussing.…...

...the information you find for future assignments in this course. Points will be taken off for a failure of your submission to comply with these instructions and provide complete information for your assigned country. (NOTE: links or web addresses are NOT sufficient unless you are specifically instructed. You must copy in the material requested.) However, I do expect there may be some discrepancies in what you are able to find. Do your best to find information that matches the instructions. If there are differences, find the closest match you can. For example, if you cannot find information for each of 3 consecutive years as discussed below, but there is information at some other interval – perhaps every 3 or 5 years, copy in 3 intervals worth. In addition, if for any of the items below you cannot find the requested information for your country, you may then, and only then, find the information requested for a country in the same region. For example, if your country is Vietnam and you cannot find the information requested for Vietnam for one item, you may substitute with the information for Thailand or China. One last note: references are not needed for these answers unless a reference is specifically requested. To get started, create a word document that will contain your findings from this scavenger hunt as the instructions ask you to record them. Put your name at the top of the document. Indicate the name of the country you have been assigned to study. Put all......

Directions: * Select one out of the following three questions. Write an essay of approximately and no more than 1200 –1500 words. (Use the “word count” function in your word processor). * Quoting: you should quote from the text. Here are some examples: (Symposium, 175E), (Exodus 22:1). Quotes should not stand on their own. They should be attached to some part of a non-quoted sentence (it can be as short as: For example, “……..” or Sophocles states, “…………”). * How to begin your paper: Jump straight to answering the question. Do not summarize the text, but rather write with a reader who is familiar with the text in mind. Also avoid general sayings such as “In human history, women have always been subordinated” or “Leaders tend to be very interesting figures.” One way to start your paper is with a question you will be answering. But don’t use the same wording – try to rephrase it, paraphrase it, or break it up. * Make sure you have a......

...Instructions Your discussion questions are due by the end of the announced time period. Answer the questions below, and type your answers in the “answer box.” Copy and paste the answer box into the discussion board forum titled “My Mother Never Worked.” If you are working with a partner or in a small group, type the full name of each group member into the subject line of your post. Answer Box 1. Answer question one under Purpose and Audience. Write the thesis IN YOUR OWN WORDS. I believe that the point that the writer is trying to prove is that her mother was a hard worker throughout her whole life who never once stopped working regardless of the circumstances or obstacles that she came across. I think that her thesis was never explicitly stated because the telephone conversation stated her thesis well. She stated her essay with the telephone conversation and in the pause between the response of the lady from the Social Security Office she goes back in time and gives a little background of all the jobs her mom had. The writer had a specific question and the lady had a solid answer. At the end of the passage the lady answered her question and gave her the news that she wasn’t eligible for death benefits because her mother never worked according to their records. In my opinion the thesis was in some way written throughout the whole essay when she was explaining all the jobs and task her mom actually had because at the end of the essay you don’t question the...
