...By first glance at the title Stars, I assumed the story would have something to do with the author’s perception of the constellations during the night. By my growing knowledge of the Holocaust I then remembered the Star of David was very significant in determining Jews from non-Jews. It still baffles me to believe that this symbol, which is worn on chains by people of the Jewish faith today, could be used to discriminate one race from the other and aid in their humiliation and ultimately their death. During the reading, I was hearing the similar story of the suffering and measures taken by Jews while in the concentration camps. However, I discovered a different tone than most other stories. Even though Michael was frightened like the rest, he chose to act in order to save his cousin. His courage and quick thinking skills, which benefited Jews greatly during this period of persecution, not only saved himself but saved another by risking his life in exchange. A memory bubble came to me of the numerous times I stood standing in line at a bar without being of the legal age to drink alcohol. Most occasions I would hand the bouncer my authentic I.D. stating that I was underage and he would mark my hand with an “X” or something similar to show that I wasn’t allowed to drink while in the bar. Thinking on my feet, I learned that sometimes the “X” would come right off if I ran quickly to the bathroom to wash it off. Other times I would put Chap-Stick on the back of my......

My Morning

...Oscar Islas Professor Preasmyer Persuasive Writing 26 January, 2013 My Morning (Ex 14.11) I have a really hard time waking up in the morning, so I put on three alarms to wake me up. I put one on at 7:30am just too kind of get me shaken-up and be aware that it’s time to be up. Then I put another one at 7:40am to remind me to wake up again, if this alarm goes on it usually because I am still in bed. The third alarm I put on goes off at 7:45am. Now, if this alarm goes on I literally jump out of my bed and race my way to class, but I usually never wait that that long. The time I am usually up is 7:40am. When I get up I just lay there for a couple minutes and gather my thoughts. I like to run things through my head that I need to get done in the day. After I am done processing my thoughts and know what I have to get done today I reach over to my desk and grab my phone. I check all my social media before I get up from my bed. I check my Facebook notifications, and reply to anything friends comment on my status updates. After my Facebook quick check, I scroll through my Twitter and see what the popular trends are for the day. Usually it tells me the breaking news or anything that is happening in the world. Then I check my Instagram feed, instagram is a social media where friends you follow post pictures and edit them with awesome photo effects. Lastly, I check my emails. I usually hope and pray one of my professors cancel class but that never happens. When I am done......

Morning Beach

...Morning Beach It is early in the morning and the sky is still dim. The immured beach is quiet besides a flock of seagulls pecking at leftover food wrappers. The yellow, phosphorescent sunrise emerges in the distance. The warm, glowing rays greet me with a friendly hello. Miles of shimmering blue water and brown sugar sand encompass me. As I walk along blanket of sand, along the shore, my footprints show my path and are quickly washed away by the waves, turning the shore into a blank canvas. The crashing waves splash my skin feels as refreshing as an ice cold drink on a summer day. The howling wind whistles along the beach like an arriving train as I return to the main area. The rhythmically pounding waves sound peaceful. I walk to a long strip of shops to admire their exquisite commodities. Small, beachfront shops prepare for the day’s customers who will rummage through their merchandise. Key-holders set the seaside products outside their shops. Fashionable clothes and jewelry are propped in the windows, beside brightly colored seashells. I smell fresh coffee and pastries as I pass a Starbucks Coffee shop. As I continue my morning stroll, I only see joggers along the usually busy sidewalks of Clearwater Avenue. I head back to the beach. Some friends play a competitive game of Frisbee near the beach’s pier. The soft blanket of sand cushions one of the adolescents as he reaches high and then dives for the disk. I look to my left and hear the beach is now filled with...

Stars

...in about 150 BC He ranked the stars he could see in terms of their brightness, with 1 representing the brightest down to 6 representing the faintest. Modern astronomy has extended this system to stars brighter than Hipparchus' 1st magnitude stars and ones much, much fainter than 6. As it turns out, the eye senses brightness logarithmically, so each increase in 5 magnitudes corresponds to a decrease in brightness by a factor 100. The absolute magnitude is the magnitude the stars would have if viewed from a distance of 10 parsecs or some 32.6 light years. Obviously, Deneb is intrinsically very bright to make this list from its greater distance. Rigel, of nearly the same absolute magnitude, but closer, stands even higher in the list. Note that most of these distances are really nearby, on a cosmic scale, and that they are generally uncertain by at least 20%. All stars are variable to some extent; those which are visibly variable are marked with a "v". What are apparent and absolute magnitudes? Apparent is how bright the appear to us in the sky. The scale is somewhat arbitrary, as explained above, but a magnitude difference of 5 has been set to exactly a factor of 100 in intensity. Absolute magnitudes are how bright a star would appear from some standard distance, arbitrarily set as 10 parsecs or about 32.6 light years. Stars can be as bright as absolute magnitude -8 and as faint as absolute magnitude +16 or fainter. There are thus (a very few) stars more than 100 times brighter......

...Famous Stars in our Galaxy There are about 300 billion different stars in our galaxy. All of which contain different history, characteristics and general information. They each contain their own story of how they came about. Many of these stars are a part of a certain constellation and have been around for billions of years. Polaris is one the best known stars. (“How Do Stars Form,” n.d.) This star is known by many names like the North or Pole Star. Polaris has not always been the North Star and will not always remain the North Star. As centuries change the North Star will also do so. “A famous star called Thuban, in the constellation Draco the Dragon, was the North Star when the Egyptians built the pyramids.” (earthsky) Polaris will remain as the North Star for many more centuries to come. There was a time where people depended on their lives on this star to guide them. Fortunately, they used the North Star and the Big Dipper without getting lost. “. When slavery existed in the United States, slaves counted on the Big Dipper (which they called the Drinking Gourd) to show them the North Star, lighting their way to the free states and Canada.” (earthsky) Polaris is not hard to miss in the sky; it is the 50th brightest star and does not disappear. The reason this star will not disappear is due to the fact that the Earth’s axis is aligned pointing towards Polaris in the same direction North faces but will eventually shift over time. In comparison to the sun, this star is......

...Science of Stars Science of Stars This paper is about the science of the stars.   In this paper I will address how astronomers determine the composition, temperature, speed, and rotation rate of distant objects.   I will briefly explain the properties of stars in the H-R diagram from Chapter 15 of the course textbook “The Cosmic Perspective”.   I will also summarize the lifecycle of the Sun and identify where the Sun is in its lifecycle.   Studying Distant Objects Astronomers study light which comes from distant objects to determine its composition, temperature, speed, and rotation of distant objects.   This process is called spectroscopy.   Spectroscopy was first used to study celestial objects in 1863 by William Higgins.   By using this process he discovered the Sun and most stars are primarily composed of hydrogen gases. By using the spectroscopy technique it was discovered that different objects give off and absorb different spectrums of light. Where the object falls in the spectrum of light can be determined by examining its peak intensity at each wave length of light.   The light helps us to determine an objects composition, temperature, and rotation. There are three types of spectra used to evaluate light.   Objects which absorb light at different wavelengths are referred to as absorption spectrum. The intensity of light drops in objects which absorb light and therefore appear as dark lines on a rainbow of colors.   Objects such are stars, planets with......

...I was born the only child to two alcoholics. After my mother became pregnant with me, she quit drinking. However, my father did not. It may seem unfortunate to have an alcoholic as a father, but over the years I have realized that he plays a very significant part in my life. Typically, a dad should serve as a role model to his child. My father has inspired me to become the complete opposite of him. He is here to make me a better and stronger person. The August rain falling outside of my window reflected my mood precisely, gloomy like the gray sky painted with dark clouds, yet hopeful like the plants that longed for a taste of water. The morning of my fifteenth birthday had finally arrived. This was the day I had anticipated my whole life, my entrance to womanhood, but I knew it was not going to turn out as perfectly as I had hoped. My dad had to ruin one of the most special days of my life with his absence. "It's whatever," I thought and remained optimistic. My mother and I sat in my room and awaited my father's arrival. My father's disappearance was nothing new though, simply a reoccurring nightmare. It was now the evening of my fifteenth birthday and my father was still nowhere in sight. We did not know where he was or who he was with, all we knew was that he was lost and desperately needed to be found. My mother and I spent the entire evening of my birthday searching for my father. After hours of searching, my mother and I finally......

One Morning

...The Lost Stranger It was just like any other winter morning at work. There were barely any customers at the auto parts store where I worked at and the temperatures were below freezing. There was a blizzard the night before and the streets hadn’t been plowed yet. I had worked the night shift the day before and unfortunately opened the store this morning because I was covering for another employee who had called in sick. Coffee, donuts and the freezing weather were the only things that kept me awake because I had not been able to get enough sleep. We were not busy so I went outside for a smoke. A couple minutes passed by and I noticed a car pulling into the parking lot and it sound like there was something wrong with it, it was making an unusual grinding and squealing noise. It sounded as if the belt was rubbing against some metal part or the pulley bearing had gone bad. As he got out of the car and was walking towards the store I put my cigarette out and threw it in the overflowing cigarette disposal. The man was in a very nice suit and was clean shaved with his hair slicked back but looked tired and seemed like he had been on the road for a while. He proceeded to walk in the store; I walked in with him and asked if he needed any help. He told me that he was from out of town and was trying to get to his daughters house but the car kept making the squealing noise and he was worried if there was something major wrong with the car and if he would even be able to make it to......

Mornings in Jenin

...Saja Hassouneh 21210344 Mornings in Jenin The novel, Mornings in Jenin, starts with prolepsis scene when Amal, the protagonist (dynamic character) and also the autodiegetic narrator, was 47 years old. The novel opens with a stunning prelude set in Jenin in 2002. Amal, the granddaughter of the founder of the family Yehya, looks directly into the soldier’s eyes. He is about to kill her as she thinks while he is pointing his gun towards her front head: ‘’He had killed before, but never while looking his victim in the eyes. Amal saw that, and she felt his troubled soul amid the carnage around them. She knew, from the soldier’s blink, that she would live. The petitions of memory pulled her back, and still back, to a home she had never known. ‘’ The prelude sets up the novel giving readers a view of events that will happen later in Amal’s live: providing a background, which is Jenin in 2002; revealing what’s going to happen to Amal in the future and what got her to this current moment; establishing the tone of the work; and introducing the theme of the novel which is the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel. Moreover, the author reveals Amal’s character as an American citizen (and not as a Palestinian) to disclose to the readers if the officials might express regret for killing Americans unlike Palestinians. The prelude doesn’t tell whether the Israeli soldier got the guts to kill Amal or not but at the end of the novel she got shot and died while protecting her......

This Morning

...This Morning by Lucille Clifton Lucille Clifton was an American poet, writer, and educator from New York. Her work emphasizes endurance, mostly focusing on her African - American experience and family life. Common topics in her poetry include the celebration of her African American heritage, and feminist themes, with particular emphasis on the female body. This poem is mostly about how the speaker view her identity. The purpose of this poem is to show that the speaker’s belief in herself. The first sentence, “This morning I met myself coming in” means that as the girl wakes up, she recognizes who she is and then she describes herself. There are metaphors used in the second stanza, the sentence “a bright jungle girl shining” represents an image of a girl who is very active. This metaphor also describes things in nature, it shows that the speaker see herself as an unique, and special. “This Morning” it’s a metaphor for the present time, is that she found herself or appreciates herself. In the last stanza, it says “And all day I have been a black bell ringing I survive, survive, survive.” it means, out of all the things that she has been through, now she has finally got through her problems and found the person she truly is, in Lucille Clifton’s case, it means she found where she stood in the society as an African - American. The speaker kept repeating “I met myself” in line 3 and line 12 to show that she survives from her problems. A simile is a figure of speech that......

...In this paper I will explain how astronomers determine the composition, temperature, speed, and rotation rate of distant objects using various methods. I will explain the properties of stars. I will also summarize the complete lifecycle of the Sun and determine where the Sun is currently in its lifecycle.Light is a type of energy. Light behaves like a wave because it acts as a disturbance in the magnetic and electric field of space. Light can behave as a particle, because it sends all its energy to one place. A particle of light is called a photon. Photons can be absorbed into objects, bounce off objects, or fly through space. Scientists use the electromagnetic spectrum to organize and explain all types of electromagnetic energy that exist throughout the universe. Electromagnetic waves are organized in the electromagnetic spectrum according to their wavelength from the shortest, which are known as gamma rays to the longest which are known as radio waves. Electromagnetic energy is created by vibration. The vibration produces waves that carry energy. Each magnetic wave emits a different level of energy. These energies travel silently at the speed of light and produce a signature wave with a unique range of length, energy and frequency that scientists can identify and measure. One way that the energy of an electromagnetic wave is measured is by measuring its frequency. Frequency refers to the number of waves a vibration creates during a period of time. In general, the higher......
