Literature and the Individual in Early Modern Masterpieces

...Literature and the Individual in Early Modern Masterpieces John Milton was a unique individual with the artistic ability to write various forms of literature in several different languages that catered to a wide scope of genres. Milton had a profound impact on the English language because of his contributions to the English dialect (Crace, 2008). Milton was a devout protestant that was not afraid to show his dedication to his beliefs regarding religion and his civil rights, even if it meant casting a different outlook on religion entirely. Within today’s society it can be concluded that Milton revolutionized the English language this will benefit the American Culture in the past, present, and future times. Milton’s response to earlier writer’s regarding his religious and political beliefs were quite exquisite. Milton was highly educated in all subjects including, theology, philosophy, and mathematics. Therefore, he was active in the country of Europe where he had the opportunity to meet great Renaissance writers like Galileo (Longman, p. 1796). Milton took it upon himself to sacrifice his poetic writings to set that aside and work full-time toward the Puritan Reformation, in which he focused on religious and political pieces that focused on Puritanism. He adopted strong beliefs as an individual who encourage other people to adopt the same outlooks on religion and politics. Therefore, the classical authority that of Milton’s defining markers can be clearly defined through......

Beowulf: a Historical Masterpiece

...Beowulf: A Historical Masterpiece Written in approximately 750 A.D., Beowulf is the only remaining transcript of the 10th century. Even before it was written though, it had been circulated though it’s original oral narrative. Many of the events and characters tie to battles and actual figures in history that pre-date the Anglo-Saxon invasion in 450 A.D. Though originally pagan in nature, due to the Anglo-Saxon conversion to Christianity Beowulf was told through a Christian poet. The poet does reference to biblical thoughts and ideas, it’s mixed within the basic Anglo-Saxon principle. Which is pretty impressive. The fact that one can use Beowulf as a way to look at and understand the Anglo-Saxon culture, which may have been lost without it, is an historical feet all on its own. The values shown in the characters in Beowulf are the same values the Anglo-Saxon had. When it came to the values of the warrior class, it’s especially similar. Beowulf is in a sense the quintessential Anglo-Saxon warrior. Warriors at that time were first and foremost loyal to his people and his thane. A warrior was also brave and valorous. Without these what kind of warrior would one be? The warrior had to be courageous to go out to battle without certainty of coming home. Along with courage, a warrior also had to be proud. Not too proud as to offend the thane or his lady, just enough to make him seem worthwhile. Strength was a very sought after trait in a warrior. Strength was so highly viewed in...

Literary Masterpieces

...A literary masterpiece is a piece of literature that has an theme and not only speak of specific events that occurred to a single character, but instead create characters who overcome difficult life situations and characters who are dimensional that uphold characteristic traits that reflects people of modern society and today's society. Characters in a literary masterpiece is important because they are the most memorable and their personalities make the literature stand out more clearly due to the fact that their qualities can be compared and contrasted to anyone of any time period in history. However, the theme is the most important in literary masterpieces because everything within an literature work depends on the theme. The theme outline the whole story and what is going to take place. The prior expectations regarding the literary masterpieces and my expectations of this course are based off not only my own knowledge but the way I critically analyze literature and my experiences with literary masterpieces. In all honesty, when it comes to a literary masterpiece, I expect them to fall into literature categories such as, novels, short stories, poems, comedies, dramas, mysteries, nonfiction and fiction. The reason being is based off my experiences from my very first English literature class. Where we had to read literary masterpieces such as, Alice Walker short story,"Everyday Use" and "Color Purple". Also, Langton Hughes poems," Let America be America" and "Still......

Food Mart

...Foodmart and Masterpiece entered a contract stating that Masterpiece promised to complete the work requested exactly as required within the six month timeframe. Masterpiece construction soon realized that because of a recent increase in business they could not complete the work. Masterpiece hired a subcontractor to complete the Foodmart renovation. Foodmart was unhappy with the poor quality of work and became aware that Masterpiece had subcontracted the work out to Build Them to Fall Construction. Foodmart received an injunction and sued Masterpiece for breach of contract and specific performance. In defense Masterpiece stated they had the right to delegate duties or discharge the contract claiming commercial impracticability. Deciding if Masterpiece breached the contract is difficult to determine because according to the UCC, a party can perform contracted duties through a delegated third party unless otherwise agreed upon (LII/Legal Information Institute, 2005). Not enough information has been provided to determine if the contract specifically stated acceptance or no acceptance of third parties completing duties. Masterpiece either way should have notified Foodmart of their decision to use a third party. Foodmart will win the breach of contract for the poor quality of work performed. Though Masterpiece subcontracted out the work they are still responsible for the quality of the work. Foodmart will also win on the commercial impracticability defense claim by Masterpiece.......

Expectations of Literary Masterpieces

...Literary Masterpieces ENG/106 March 31, 2014 Expectations Regarding Literary Masterpieces Coming in to a new class can be a daunting experience, especially when one does not know what to expect. It can also be an exciting experience, especially when one has a special fondness for the subject being taught. As a psychology major, ENG/106 is not a required class. As a bibliophile, there was no question that I would use the need to fulfill an elective requirement as a reasonable excuse to take this class. There are many preconceived notions around the study of literary masterpieces, and some people have a hard time pushing past the bitter memories of stuffy high school English teachers and 30 page book reports on Crime and Punishment to be worked on over summer vacation. I am lucky enough to have had a wonderful experience with the classics, and my expectations for ENG/106 come from a place of fondness, respect, and genuine awe. With that being said, there is more to understanding literary masterpieces than simply enjoying a good read; one should also recognize the preconceived notions that often come with the subject, as well as have an understanding of why literary masterpieces are important and how they influence modern society. My Experiences and Expectations My experience with literary masterpieces began at age seven when I first read Charlotte’s Web. While that may not be considered a literary masterpiece, it......

I did not have the most pleasant experience with reading literature until my freshman year. I was certain that I would not understand “old books,” they would be boring and last the “cool” kids did not have time to read books. They were too busy being cool to worry about nerdy things like that. I was wrong about those things. Since I have grown a bit I notice that those “old books” are transformed into movies that have sold out in theaters. There are many things that discouraged me from reading decent literature growing up from being worried I would not comprehend the story, being under the impression that they were boring and that reading was not a popular thing to do. The Maker and His Masterpiece

...The Maker and His Masterpiece Bailey Campbell August 24, 2014 Honors English IV What is the Doctrine of Creation and what is the full meaning of this important document? The Doctrine of Creation are guidelines and the background of how God intended to create the earth and how He created us to be rulers. Knowing why God did what He did makes the worldly sense of creation easier to understand and also easier to know that to Him, we were perfect. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,” Genesis 1:1 states that God created the heaven and the earth. With that, everything God made was how he wanted it be. Therefore, there are no faults in His creation. Creation to Him was like painting a beautiful picture that symbolized his love and blessing of the world. Within the world, God first created wisdom. Wisdom was created to know of the world while the world was being created in the image and standard of God. Now with the blessings God was giving the earth and showing wisdom the knowledge to know everything, God blessed everything. He blessed the birds in the sky and blessed the fish in the sea. In Genesis, He is satisfied with everything that he has made. In each little place God made, He thought was good. He made this breath-taking garden but did not have anyone to look after this masterpiece. That is when man was created. God made man a little differently than He made the earth and everything else. God made man in his own image, intended man to become......

Elements of Musical Masterpiece

...Millions of songs have been created that express an artists perspective with their lives. But very few are memorable and can consider to be a masterpiece. Anyone can create a song even myself but for a song to be a masterpiece it needs to have five elements: timeless, uniqueness, simplicity, technique, and immunity. A great example that I believe meets these elements is the song “Three little birds” by Bob Marley. Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians of all time and I think the reason why is because of this song “Three little birds”. It meets all the elements: timeless, simplicity, technique, uniqueness, and immunity. The first element this song includes is timeless. The song was recorded in 1977 and released in 1980. Many songs were released since then and then were faded away but “Three little birds still manages to be alive. Every generation has heard of this song and is still being listened to future generations. The song doesn’t fade away out and doesn’t look to fade away anytime soon. The song is also simple based on the lyrics and melody. It brings a positive attitude with the first two lines: Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be all right. With the next few lines saying a bright sunny day and three birds singing melody. And the song will repeat these lines, and thats it. Its very simple the song just states to not worry, everything will okay, and enjoy the small things like the bird’s melodies. The melody is also simple because it......

An Epic Masterpiece

...An Epic Masterpiece Gladiator is set about 2000 years ago in the Roman Empire. The director, Ridley Scott, gives the audience the feeling that they are actually in the city of Rome 2000 years ago watching the gladiators battle each other to death with many different beautiful types of scenery and sets, such as the battle scene in the very beginning of the film, which is a beautiful forest covered in snow with trees lined on the outside of the Roman base, and Caesar’s palace, which is very big with tall rooms and many different pillars and marble floors. The most notable set in the film is the famous Coliseum of Rome which stands about twenty stories high, holding about 20,000 people to watch the gladiators battle to the death, looked as if it were the actual coliseum being used by the gladiators. Scott gives the film a sense of realism by showing blood and gore as it might happen if they were actually fighting in a ring. The film’s main character, Maximus (Russell Crowe), is made a slave by the new ruler of Rome, Commodus, (Joaquin Phoenix), because his father, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), was murdered by Commodus in a jealous rage because Marcus decides to make Maximus his successor, which does not go over well with Commodus. Maximus is taken away to be executed, but escapes and sets out to find his wife and child dead and is captured by slave-traders to become a slave. He is bought by Proximo who makes him fight as a gladiator around different arenas to make......

...Running header: GROCERY, INC. Grocery, Inc. September 5, 2009 Masterpiece Builders “Grocery contracted with Masterpiece Construction to renovate the store on Main Street in My Town” (Cooper, 2009). Masterpiece Construction increased its workload during the period covering the promised renovations for Grocery, Inc., causing Masterpiece Construction to subcontract the work for the renovation to Build Them to Fall. Once Grocery, Inc. realized the poor quality of work, the company petitioned for an injunction and filed a suit for breach of contract against Masterpiece Construction. Grocery’s request for specific performance is burdensome because Masterpiece Construction does not have enough labor to complete the contract for Grocery, Inc., thus creating a hardship for Masterpiece Construction. The personal service contract is the main reason the courts would not grant such a request because the “courts would find it difficult or impracticable to supervise or monitor performance of the contract” (Cheeseman, 2004, p. 311). Masterpiece Construction attempts to escape responsibility for the improper workmanship by formulating two arguments; these arguments include (a) commercial impracticability and (b) the right to delegate duties. Unless the original contract stipulated no delegation of duties by another company, Masterpiece Construction is within its contractual rights to seek help from Build Them to Fall; however, the inferior workmanship from Build......

Intro to Masterpieces of Drama

...Introduction to Masterpieces of the Drama (by Alexander W. Allison, Arthur J. Carr and Arthur M. Eastman) 1. “The implications of such natural playacting are vast, for good and for ill – for good, because individual and social happiness depends on right acting; for ill, because misrepresentations, deceit, mischief, and falsehood can also be learned by imitation.” "Much of what we know we learn by imitation, by acting parts, by practicing what we shall say or do." Language, for example, is taught by making the learner repeat what has been said. Filipino children exposed to English cartoon shows tend to become fluent in the language used. Those who are exposed to violent shows like wrestling become aggressive, as a result of idolizing the characters involved. People tend to "copy" what they observe in their environment. What makes drama vast is the fact that "the essentials of drama not only inhere in social experience; in basic ways they determine it." Materials of drama were used, including music, dancing, and the reenactment of important deeds and occasions. There are five epochs in which drama flourished, namely The Greek Classics, The Middle Ages, The Elizabethan Drama, The Neo-Classical French Drama and The Modern Drama. Looking back at the history of drama, it can be seen that each of these epochs has its own contributions to the modern drama. The Greek Classics was the epoch in which drama has begun. The most influential playwrights were Aeschylus,......

Foodmart Inc

...Foodmart Inc. suing Masterpiece for breach of contract, specifically regarding Masterpiece’s performance on a renovation project. The second case concerns Jeremy Atwater, an employee of Foodmart, who is being sued by a car company named Smooth Sales Used Cars over the legality of a contract. The third lawsuit involves Brian, a manager of Foodmart, as a defendant versus Harry, who is suing him for breach of contract. In the final case, Foodmart itself is being sued by Todd, who accuses Foodmart of damaging his business because the grocery store did not give him a sauce that he wanted. Foodmart versus Masterpiece Foodmart contracted with Masterpiece Construction to renovate one of its stores in Any Town, specifically the one on Main Street. In the contract, Foodmart requested that Masterpiece complete the project within six months. Because it had too many other contracts, Masterpiece Construction was unable to finish the renovation in six months. To solve the matter, Masterpiece hired a different company, namely Build Them to Fall Construction, to complete the job. Build Them to Fall, however, did a very poor job. Foodmart was not notified by Masterpiece that they subcontracted with another company to finish the renovation. Foodmart sued Masterpiece for breach of contract and for performance issues. Foodmart’s argument was that Masterpiece agreed to renovate the store in six months and they were the ones hired to finish the job, not another company. Also, Masterpiece should......

Foodmart Inc

...contract with Masterpiece for the renovation of the store on Main Street. Foodmart had an express contract, an agreement in written form, that Masterpiece had 6 months to ensure the renovation (Cheeseman, 2010). The specifics that are necessary to know are if Foodmart had any clauses in the contract preventing Masterpiece from subcontracting other work and if Masterpiece had to hold work done to a certain standard. The article mentions that Foodmart has noticed the poor quality of work being completed and passed for acceptable. Masterpiece is ultimately responsible for the final product and if the quality is not acceptable by the 6 month deadline, Masterpiece is at fault. Masterpiece does not have the authority to change the terms of this contract based on new contracts. By agreeing to this, Masterpiece agrees that the deadline is reasonable and any new contracts signed should already take this into consideration. Masterpiece can try to rule this as an unconscionable contract, a contract that courts refuse to enforce in part or in whole because it is so oppressive or manifestly unfair as to be unjust (Cheeseman, 2010). Masterpiece must prove the parties possessed severely unequal bargaining power, the dominant party unreasonably used its unequal bargaining power to obtain oppressive or manifestly unfair contract terms, and the adhering party had no reasonable alternative. Basically they must prove that Foodmart had unjustly formed the contract and brought Masterpiece......
