In the Summer of 2009, my father took me into the city to see a parade. As a marching band high-stepped along the rail from where I was standing, I was in absolute awe. The brightly colored uniforms and boldness of the sound shocked the audience with enthusiasm. From that moment on, I decided that no matter what, I would be part of a marching band. As I went onto High school, band has helped me develop musical skills and the building blocks for the future such as commitment, self-discipline, and leadership.

As time passed, I learned how to make positive choices, as well as responsibility. This lead me to stay on task and focus on what is necessary to achieve my goals. I have made many sacrifices along the way, such as re-evaluating friendships and passing up excellent job opportunities in order to continue my passion for marching band. The role of Drum Major flared in front of my eyes. I decided to take advantage of such opportunity. After gaining such honor, I began to set high standards for myself and became an example for others.

Throughout the years, I learned the meaning of hard work and the satisfaction that comes from it. Although I am not pursuing a career in music, I would still like to minor in it. Since there is no specific major for Pre-Dentistry school, I need to figure out a major that will prepare me for the Dentistry world. Marching band has given me the opportunity to develop a solid foundation and the hopes to soon become part of Illinois and the Marching Illini; the best band in the land.…...

Band of Brothers

...Krysta Desper Mr. Connors U.S. History I CPS 10 C 17 January 2013 Band of Brothers In the summer of 1942, young men in Army training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, are given an opportunity to be part of a unique unit of paratroopers. This unit offers $50 dollars a month extra for hazardous duty pay, which draws a lot of the volunteers. These men begin a very rigorous training regimen under Captain Sobel, whom most of the men come to hate. Their training includes basic infantry skills - use and maintenance of various weapons, map reading, and communications. They also practice jumping with parachutes, beginning with towers of varying heights, then to the actual jump from an airplane. The hardest part of their training is a run they must make, up to the top of Mount Currahee, which is an Indian name that means We Stand Alone Together. After several long months of this training, the men of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, are shipped to Uppottery, England, where they continue their training. They are being prepared for the greatest military maneuver ever undertaken; the D-Day invasion of Normandy. The 506 is to parachute behind the German lines and work their way back towards the beach, to meet the Allies there, and hopefully cut off German supply lines to the front in the process. On June 6, 1944, the invasion comes, after having been postponed for bad weather. The drops do not go well, due to anti-aircraft fire and low visibility, but as the men hit the ground,......

Band Theory

...BAND THEORY OF SOLIDS According to quantum free electron theory of metals, a electron in a metal experiences constant(or zero) potential and free to move inside the crystal but will not come out of the metal because an infinite potential exists at the surface. Bloch Theorem: According to this theorem, the periodic potentials due to the positive ions in metal have been considered. (i.e. the electrons moves in a periodic potential provided by lattice). If the electron moves through these ions, it experiences varying potentials. The potential of an electron at the positive ion site zero and is maximum in between two ions. i.e. the potential experienced by an electron varies periodically with the same period as the lattice. The potential is negative because of attractive force between electrons and positive ions. Along X- direction in the crystal, the potential function V(x) has the periodicity of lattice given by V(x) = V(x + a ) where, ‘x’ is distance of the electron from the core and ‘ a’ is the periodicity of the lattice. The energies of electron can be known by solving Schreodinger’s time independent wave equation for motion of an electron along x-direction is given by Bloch showed a type of solution for the above equation, given by ψ(x) = uk (x) eikx where uk(x) represents periodic function given by uk (x) = uk(x+a) Here, K = 2π/λ = propagation vector and λ = wavelength of debroglie’s wave associated with the......

The Speakled Band

...DR GRIMSBEY ROYLOTT / SHERLOCK HOMLES/ THE SPEACKLED BAND “The speckled band” is the title of this story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is about Sherlock Holmes trying to solve a locked room mystery in Dr Grimesby Roylott’s house which is called Stoke Moran. Dr Grimsby is a money hungry freak who has no friends. Dr Grimesby Roylott has a fascinating past and we can deduce much from this. For example; “he spent time in India and that is where he met Helen’s and Julia’s mother and developed an interest in Indian animals.” Overall Dr Roylott has an obsession with Indian animals. Another point we can make about Dr Grimesby Roylott is that he is really muscular and creepy. This is proven by the following evidence; “seized the poker and bent it into a curve.” This quotation shows that he is an incredibly strong and scary man. Overall we could say that you would not like to mess with him. DR Grimesby Roylott is actually a very clever man. This is proven by the following evidence; “Dr Roylott planned out the room where Julia Stoner died, so a snake could go throw a ventilator, down a bell pull and into her bed so it could bite her. This quotation shows that he is smart by planning a head. Overall he is smart most of the time but a bit stupid at other times. There were a few red herrings in this story. One of them was the gipsies; “It must have been those wreched gipsies.” The other red herring was the Indian animals (the cheater and the baboon);......

...and the Band Played on

...“And the Band Played On” Film Analysis “And the Band Played On” was a very informative film. It follows Dr. Don Francis, from his involvement in the Ebola outbreak in Africa to his work on the first cases of AIDS in San Francisco to his departure from the CDC. It provides viewers with the truth about the discovery of HIV and AIDS, shedding light on the cover ups and lack of concern of numerous government officials in the 1980s. I found the film to be an eye-opener, providing me with a history lesson on AIDS while showing me just how corrupt people can be. The Facts I learned a great deal about the disease and its beginnings that I probably never would have known had it not been for the film. Before viewing the film, I was unaware of the details surrounding the discovery of AIDS. I knew that it was a growing concern during the 1980s and that it was mostly linked with homosexual males, but I did not know anything specific. From the film, I learned that the first case was a woman in 1977 (Pillsbury, Sanford & Spottiswoode, 1993). Though I was aware that AIDS was never a disease that only affected homosexual men, I still found this surprising. Bathhouses were also a major concern during the AIDS crisis, which I was also news to me (Pillsbury et al., 1993). I was unaware that bathhouses where many gay men met others for anonymous sex were so commonplace in San Francisco in the 1980s, let alone that there was a push to close them because of their role in the spread...

...number and title: 05 Compare/contrast two music groups or two teams Date of submission: 05/02/15 When you think of classic rock what comes to mind? What bands do you think of? For some it can be Metallica. For others it may be Megadeth. What came before that though, was also just as incredible. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath paved the way for those heavier 80's band. The godfathers of thrash are direct products of 60's and, more specifically, 70's hard rock bands. The debate remains the same though, who ushered in heavy metal? Some argue Black Sabbath, while others claim Led Zeppelin. Let's get a better look at those two bands though. Who are they, where did they come from and what did they leave for a legacy? Let's go back to 1968 Birmingham, England. Times were hard, growing up was harder. You either ended up in the factory, military or a criminal. If you lived long enough that is. For some there was an alternate escape. Music was a way to not think about how bad things were and how much worse they could become. Four young men were about to embark on a lifelong journey of music, mayhem and madness. John “Ozzy” Osbourne, Terence “Geezer” Butler, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi had come together to form a band called Earth. However things weren't going well for them. They kept getting confused with another band named Earth, so they opted to change their name. A theater across the street was playing horror movies, and they noted how people more or less paid to be......

Band Leadership

...When I first joined Band in sixth grade, I was awkward, shy, and I didn't know what “group” I belonged to. Band changed all of that for me. When I became part of the Band, I learned what it it mean to be part of a team, how to be responsible, how to support others in my group, how to be comfortable expressing myself and voicing my opinion, and what it feels like to be part of a successful team. Band has also taught me to put the needs of a group above my own. I understand how the good of the group outweighs the good of the individual. I want to be a leader in the band program so that I can help my fellow Band members learn all the lessons I've learned and have fun doing it. I want band to touch other student’s lives the way it touched mine. Leaders can make a difference in the success of an organization. To me, leaders should be someone that the other team members look up to and follow the example being set. Being a leader means giving more, working harder, and rising above the frustrations and continuing to smile. A good leader never asks their team to do more than what they are willing do. I want to be a leader so I can make a difference in peoples lives and help make the Band better. I am proud to be a part of the Band. If I am able to continue to be part of the leadership team, my goal is to continue to be a positive influence and help the band be successful. I want to help the other band students finish marching season and help them realize that they have......

And the Band Played on

...The film "And the Band Played On" was a very graphic portrayal of the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. It vividly depicted the medical, social, government, and political forces behind the AIDS epidemic's origin and rapid spread. It tells the political as well as the scientific struggle that occurred with the discovery of AIDS. The main character, Dr. Don Francis, heads the research of AIDS with little money and little help. The reason for the lack of funding was because AIDS was considered the “gay man’s disease” and there was more emphasis on who discovered the disease rather than actually helping those who had it. This movie was about the government and many other individuals being ignorant and looking the other way because homosexual males were seen as a lesser priority and an inferior group. CDC officials ran into a large barrier during their investigation; homosexual men refused to allow themselves to be submitted for testing, and the tracing of their sexual encounters. The CDC took a very long time to trace the spread of the disease to a single person, who turned out to be a homosexual flight attendant who was extremely promiscuous with other men. This was a large accomplishment at the time, but was only a small success in the process as a whole. Other major factors impeded the progress of effectively handling the epidemic. These included the initial lack of interest by media and......
