Organizations as Machines

...Gareth Morgan Images of Organizations Organizations as Machines The central thesis of Gareth Morgan’s book ‘Images of Organizations’ is that all developed theories of organization are based on implicit metaphors. By this, the author tries to give a deeper insight into the nature and design of organizations, as they have tremendously changed and further developed over time. In the following, I will demonstrate how the metaphor ‘Organizations as Machines’ can be used to highlight certain aspects of organizations and to generate deep understandings of the nature of organization as well as organizational life referring to this distinct, very sophisticated metaphor. Viewing an organization as a machine shapes our perceptions, expectations and actions in profound ways. We take for granted our ability to design and operate machines to do exactly what we want them to do. We expect consistent performance, each part executing its function without variation. Planning in a mechanistic organization can be seen as the creation or construction of a detailed blueprint, everything exercised to efficiency and maximization with predictable outcome, standardized and designed as precisely as possible to diminish any possible endangerments. When seeing an organization as a machine, the plan would obviously be the focus. Despite, it is not important who created the plan or who participated in drafting it, but the quality of the plan is of capital importance. It is the basis, the......

From Physical Machines to Virtual Machines

...From Physical Machines to Virtual Machines Anthony V. Lear ITT Technical Institute From Physical Machines to Virtual Machines For years businesses have depended on multiple pieces of hardware, linked together and deployed with software, to connect users to the resources they need. As technology has advanced with today’s virtual software programs, we can now run another “virtual computer” on a physical client machine. With all the technology advances some people believe that virtual machines are equal to physical machines. First, let’s get some background of the physical machine (server/client) and what it has to offer a network. There are many options when it comes to the CPU, Motherboard, Memory (RAM), etc. These options include hard drives (storage), video cards, audio cards, and central processing units (CPU’s). Even though “it’s all just computation” (Nikhil, 2011, p.38) the combination of hardware can make or break the performance of a physical machine. IT professionals have to consider the needs of a network when choosing a physical machine. Depending on how it will be utilized on the network this will then elaborate on the requirements of the machine to provide the capabilities needed to perform its role on the network. For instance, if you require a file server to allocate resources such as software, programs, employee documents, etc. you will have to consider the servers hardware needs to meet this demand. The most important considerations for a file......

...Task 1(Project: CS674) Mishra A.(Y6 Kumar D.(Y6152) Venkat(Y Introduction: The Pattern classification for given problem is posed with serious challenge as on one side the data set is highly imbalanced in favour of B+E against B(So we have to avoid over fitting for generalization) & on the other side wrong classification can have serious consequences in diplomatic relationship between nations. So Our thrust has been to choose between various methods , one with sound justification towards our results & showing how was it better than others . Based on comparative study of various methods we have finally chosen Biased Minimax Probability Machine [1] & we would be proving superiority of our methods over SVM classifier with different parameters which we tried. Besides authors [1] have shown superiority of BMPM over DT, Naive Bayesian Classifier, K-nn classification, & other under/over Sampling methods. Methodology of BMPM: For two class Classification: Let Family {x}, {y} with mean vector & Covariance matrices {x, ∑x }, {y, ∑y} belong to class1 & class2 respectively. Let α be the worst-case accuracy for future data points from family of {x}, and β be the worst-case accuracy for future data points from family of {y}. Depending upon severity of the false positive & true positive rates α, β(Policy variables) it tries to find a maximal hyper plane to separate the two classes [pic] [pic] We can also have Non Linear Classifier by mapping the feature space into......

Stitching Machines

...STITCHING MACHINES A sewing machine is a mechanical device equipped with a needle (or needles) threaded at the point-end, which puncture the fabric periodically as it moves under the needle; each stitch is created as the thread loops onto itself (chain stitch) or locks around a second strand of thread (lockstitch), sewing the materials together. Sewing machines are used in both the home and industry, but are designed differently for each setting. Those for the home tend to be more versatile in terms of the number and kinds of stitches they can perform, but they operate more slowly than industrial machines, and have a shorter life span. Industrial machines are heavier, have a much longer life span, are capable of thousands of stitches per inch, and may be designed for very specialized tasks. Sewing machine is invented by Elias Howe in 1846 and successfully manufactured by Howe and Isaac Merritt Singer. Types of sewing machine systems -There are three types of sewing machine systems * Mechanical sewing machines * electronic sewing machines, and * computerized sewing machines Mechanical sewing machines are controlled by a rotary wheel. They have handles and disk to make changes in the tension or the length or width of the stitch. Electronic sewing machine has more features than the mechanical sewing machine. Instead of turning handles or disk, electronic sewing machines use buttons to adjust length or width of the stitch. Electronic sewing machines have......

How to Solve Destoner Machine Noies Problem

...In daily operation, DESTONER MACHINE may have some noises. How to find out the cause of the noises and how to solve the problem? First, when the destoner machine wind screen has noises, this always has close relations with the wind screen conformity. Due to the rough point of weld in corn processing, the wind screen small mouth margin height is not consistent. In allocation, it always has friction with the rotor end. Second, electromagnetism sound: it can be divided into high frequency and low frequency. It may be because of the bad conformance of the axle iron core chute, the rough iron core inner chamber and the inconformity of the rotor outer diameter processing. Usually we can adopt the method of changing rotor to solve this problem. Third, high and low voice from the motor: a. The destoner machine stator and rotor have uneven air gap. If the voice is sometimes high and sometimes low, and the voice interval time keeps invariant, then it may be caused by the bearing abrasion which makes the stator and the rotor not concentric. b. Unbalanced three-phase-current. c. Loose iron core. Fourth, if there has uneven crash, it may be caused by the crashing between the fan blade and the fan housing. Fifth, the noises from the stator and the rotor friction belongs to the limiting condition of chamber sweeping. Finally, other factors also may cause destoner machine noises, such as slot sedge part popping, vibration, long fixed bolt of the bearing cap. We should check......

The Happiness Machine

...The Happiness Machine How Google became such a great place to work. By Farhad Manjoo A few years ago, Google’s human resources department noticed a problem: A lot of women were leaving the company. Like the majority of Silicon Valley software firms, Google is staffed mostly by men, and executives have long made it a priority to increase the number of female employees. But the fact that women were leaving Google wasn’t just a gender equity problem—it was affecting the bottom line. Unlike in most sectors of the economy, the market for top-notch tech employees is stretched incredibly thin. Google fights for potential workers with Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and hordes of startups, so every employee’s departure triggers a costly, time-consuming recruiting process. Then there was the happiness problem. Google monitors its employees’ well-being to a degree that can seem absurd to those who work outside Mountain View. The attrition rate among women suggested there might be something amiss in the company’s happiness machine. And if there’s any sign that joy among Googlers is on the wane, it’s the Google HR department’s mission to figure out why and how to fix it. Google calls its HR department People Operations, though most people in the firm shorten it to POPS. The group is headed by Laszlo Bock, a trim, soft-spoken 40-year-old who came to Google six years ago. Bock says that when POPS looked into Google’s woman problem, it found it was really a new......

Machine Learning

...Machine learning According to Alp Aydin (2010), Machine learning is an area of artificial intelligence that developed from design acknowledgment and computational learning hypothesis. It investigates the study and development of calculations that can gain from and make expectations on information. Such calculations work by building a model from sample inputs keeping in mind the end goal to settle on information driven forecasts or choices, as opposed to taking after entirely static project guidelines. Machine learning is firmly identified with computational statistics; a specialty that goes for the configuration of calculation for executing factual techniques on computers. It has solid ties to numerical enhancement, which conveys techniques, hypothesis and application areas to the field. Machine learning is utilized in a scope of registering errands where outlining and programming unequivocal calculations is in feasible (Marshland, 2009). Concepts of machine learning 1. Bayesian networks A Bayesian network is a probabilistic graphical model that speaks to an arrangement of irregular variables and their restrictive independencies through a coordinated non-cyclic chart. For instance, a Bayesian system could speak to the probabilistic connections between forex market and political unrests. Given the instances of political unrests, the system can be utilized to figure the probabilities of the forex market dropping. Proficient calculations exist that perform surmising and......

Machines

...Should machines be used to do good and services instead humans? I believe they should not for many reasons. Machines can not be smart unless a human is controling it. So it would not matter if its an intelligent machine or not a human is still controlling it to do everything. When using a machine it could easily malfunction and it could be hard to fix the problem or it will just take a while to fix it. If a human is taking over instead of the machine there may be fewer problems. Machines have so many problems that it would not be worth having. Also, the more machines you have the less jobs there are for people because everyone thinks it would be better to have machines instead of people. When less people are out of work that means less money for those people and sometimes they will lose their homes or cars because they can not afford anything. Sometimes working with machines can be very stressful because they may not work at times or they could be running extremely slow and won’t get anything done. Machines are not smart at all, only when people are controlling them they are but not all the time. It may seem smart but its really not. In conclusion, I think machines should not be used to take over a human job because machines can not think only humans can think and make right or wrong decisions. Machines do not have brains, their not wired to think so why have them do stuff that we can do ourselves....

Potts • Steef L. van de Velde T his paper introduces a new neighborhood search technique, called dynasearch, that uses dynamic programming to search an exponential size neighborhood in polynomial time. While traditional local search algorithms make a single move at each iteration, dynasearch allows a series of moves to be performed. The aim is for the lookahead capabilities of dynasearch to prevent the search from being attracted to poor local optima. We evaluate dynasearch by applying it to the problem of scheduling jobs on a single machine to minimize the total weighted tardiness of the jobs. Dynasearch is more effective than traditional first-improve or best-improve descent in our computational tests. Furthermore, this superiority is much greater for starting solutions close to previous local minima. Computational results also show that an iterated dynasearch algorithm in which descents are performed a few random moves away from......
