According to Human Synergistics International (2016), The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) “assesses and provides feedback on thinking and behavioral patterns that people can change to develop themselves along multiple dimensions, including their ability to understand and manage their emotions.” It is a tool of self-answered questions that are then scored. The score lets the one taking the LSI know their leadership styles so they can then change or work on the areas where they are lacking and continue to develop in the areas where they are already strong.
Personal Thinking Styles
For myself, the strongest areas fall in positions 1, 2, 11, and 12, with numbers 11 and 12 being on top with a raw score of 40 and 99%. These areas are all considered to be “constructive styles” and encompass achievement, self-actualization, humanistic –encouragement, and affiliative traits.
Based on my LSI, achievement and self-actualizing are my strongest areas. Scoring high in achievement indicates a higher level of proficiency and an interest in attaining high-quality results on challenging projects. This reflects personally on my knack for identifying a problem and acting on it without hesitation. An example of this can be seen in my current job. Recently I noticed that one of the power points we were using was outdated and had inaccurate information. Due to my commitment to making things better, I went through and edited the power point and presented it to the rest of the team so they could use the updated version instead of the old one.
Scoring high in self-actualizing means that I have a way of thinking that results in the highest form of personal achievement. It means that I have a strong interest in working to become everything that I am capable of becoming. This is evident with my going back to school and earning my Master’s degree. It isn’t currently a requirement for my job, but I know that I am capable of achieving the goal and making myself a better person through education.
My second highest score (or backup) is affiliative with a raw score of 38 and percentile score of 93. Scoring high in this area indicates that I have a degree of sustaining satisfying relationships. For myself, I value the collaborative relationships I have built up in the workplace. According to Chan (2013), building collaborative relationships in the workplace includes being “clear and understanding’, making sure all “communication is two way”, keeping in sync with all team members by “regularly touching base” and maintaining “focus on the customer”. I see myself in all of these statements, as my team members and I regularly talk and collaborate and make sure that all of our students’ needs are being met.
My most limiting style, in my opinion, would be the perfectionistic position. On my LSI, I scored a raw of 18 and 38%. This is relatively low as far as the scale goes, but I do find myself wanting to make sure everything is perfect before it is presented to co-workers, students, or management. I am reluctant to share an idea unless I know for a fact that it is completely thought out and has support behind it. I believe that because of this, I tend to not share ideas in a brainstorming session because I am afraid that if it isn’t perfectly thought out then perhaps it will be shot down. I know that this isn’t true, but I feel that it has to be executed just right or else it isn’t worth discussing. I need to learn that ideas don’t have to be perfect, and that the whole purpose of a brainstorming session is to get the ball rolling for full development of ideas. These sessions are designed to be not so perfect, yet I agonize over speaking out if my idea isn’t the most fantastic one I have. Realizing this could make a huge difference and might get one of my ideas used, complete with its imperfections.

Impact on Management Style
Although I am not currently a manager in my department, I am the manager of my classroom. My LSI reflects how I manage my classroom pretty accurately. In regards to planning, I think the self-actualizing illustrates my planning style. According to the LSI analysis, I am effective because I am able to see possibilities and opportunities in most situations. I take an open-minded, flexible approach to my classroom activities and lab exercises, and I like to ensure that my students do the same. I don’t like doing the same old thing every day, yet at the same time I maker certain my students know exactly what we are doing every day so that they know what to expect. With leading, I feel affiliative is what drives my organizational skills. According to the analysis, I get satisfaction from my own goals, and may have a tendency to impose these goals on my students. I like to help my students discover for themselves the power of personal goal setting. With organizing, I think perfectionistic describes my style. Although I didn’t score especially high in that category, I am highly organized and know exactly what I am doing each and every day I go into the classroom, even weeks ahead of time. It sometimes can be a hindrance, as it tends to lead to a lack of flexibility on my part. It is certainly something I need to work on. Finally, with controlling, I think self-actualizing is a good indicator of my controlling style. I respect the abilities and talents of my students, and actively encourage them to work together toward success. I like to control them by not controlling them. I feel they need to figure some things out for themselves, even if it means they don’t necessarily succeed at first.
Genesis of Personal Style
I think most of my personal styles come from growing up in a household of 9 siblings. I am the oldest girl, second oldest child, and often had to be the loudest to garner my parent’s attentions. When I went out into the real world, I had no choice but to be successful. I didn’t want to end up like my family: poor, uneducated, and unfulfilled in life. I often use my personal life experiences in the classroom, and I think it helps my students to see that I’ve been there. This is especially true when they realize that I put myself through Respiratory school as a single mom with a special needs child. I know what it’s like to not have a babysitter, to have to work overtime, to have to need to miss class because my child is sick. I believe it makes me more human in their eyes, and also sets an example that they, too, can achieve their goals.
Conclusion and Reflection
I was actually a little surprised with my results. I don’t always have the most confident attitude with my work sometimes, and was delighted to see that the areas I did score well indicate that I am much stronger as a leader than I thought. I need to take this analysis and remind myself that I am a capable, strong leader and that those in my charge can benefit greatly from what I have to offer. I also have to remember that perfection isn’t always what I need to strive for. It’s okay to not be the best, as long as I continually strive to be better.

...Personal Thinking Styles Pursuant to my Life Styles Inventory (LSI): Self-description results my primary personal thinking style is “Avoidance” with a percentile score of 55% and my back-up thinking style is “Conventional” with a percentile score of 50%. As I reviewed my circumplex I became rather disturbed as I tried to understand the “Avoidance” scale. The LSI description of Avoidance states that the this thinking style is defined by tendencies of denying responsibility and your behavior, feelings of guilt and an obsession of your own concerns. I have trouble relating to these characteristics as I hardly stray from responsibility if it’s warranted or of having guilty feelings and am definitely not obsessive over my own concerns. In fact, I always own up to my responsibilities and/or any mess ups either at work or at home. I have not been in a role of a manager yet have supervised a number of interns and I have never been threatened by or with any responsibilities pushed upon me. In fact, I almost always took same on with confidence and a sense of dedication. I do agree with the assessment that at times I may not give myself full credit where I completely deserve it; I have attributed this more to humility than to insecurity. Although I am not hard on myself for mistakes and misjudgments I do, however, tend to dwell on things far longer than necessary. For example, if during a presentation I stumbled in answering a question I would live with the embarrassment of......

...A Life Styles Inventory Awakening The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) Self-Description helps individuals recognize certain thinking styles within themselves to help better understand how they can improve in personal and professional relationships. Each of the 12 styles are given a number from 1-12 and are arranged in a circular graph much like a clock. The styles are then grouped into three distinct categories: Construction Styles, Passive/Defensive Styles and Aggressive/Defensive Styles. After taking the LSI myself, I found it to be somewhat eye opening in certain categories. The LSI identified my primary thinking style at the 7 o’clock position as Oppositional, which is in the Aggressive/Defensive Style. Against the 9,207 people of which have taken the test, I scored 84% higher in this section. This indicates that this is a strong personality trait and very much like me. Some of the traits of this behavior are: the ability to ask tough questions; a negative, cynical attitude; a sarcastic sense of humor and some one who typically loves to argue. Many of these descriptions I would consider to be very accurate when it comes to describing me. The one that most closely relates to myself is the sarcastic sense of humor. For as long as I can remember I have had (and implemented regularly) a sarcastic sense of humor. I have also been told that I love to argue just for the sake of an argument. I see this regularly with close friends and loved ones. I believe this manifests mostly to......

...After participating in the LSI survey the results indicated that my primary thinking style was a tie between Achievement and the Self-Actualizing styles. The Achievement style indicates that my way of thinking is associated with personal effectiveness. My score indicated that my interest are in, as well as my proficiency at attaining high quality results on challenging projects. The Self-Actualizing style suggests that my way of thinking results in the highest form of personal fulfillment and is the final step in one’s personal growth and maturation process. With reference to the above I think that it is an accurate description of how I think and approach my day to day life. I approach all of my projects the same way with the expectation of quality results that I usually deliver and that is expected from me. At work I tend to push others to see outside of the box and take advantage of opportunities that are available to them. I would like to think that I get fulfillment from my contributions to the companies I’ve worked with in the past and currently as well as the development of the employees whom have taken my advice. My backup thinking style is Power. This style measures my tendency to associate my self-worth with the degree to which I can control and dominate others. It has been said that individuals like myself who seek power are motivated by the need to gain prestige, status and influence. Again I agree with the result of this evaluation. In my personal......

On the other hand, people who can objectively identify their strengths and weaknesses. But in the same time they found difficulties to recognize how they can enhance their strengths and how they can overcome their weaknesses. Therefore, Human Synergistic In. developed computer software called life style inventory, which will be referred as LSI. The LSI software helps users to assess their behavior, not only that, it work with them to improve strengths and reduce the effect of weaknesses. LSI is tremendously helpful software especially when you come to the working behavior, which requires interacting, dealing and working with people who are different from you. In the rest of this paper I will try articulate my life behavior base on LSI test. I found that my primary behavior is “competitive” and my backup is “approval”. First of all, I want acknowledge that LSI test somewhat touches my primary behavior which is “competitive”. I believe being competitive thinking person helped me grew up rapidly in my career. Competitive thinking style encourage me to increase my knowledge, in order to compete with other who some time been my colleagues or coworkers. He likes that I am responsible and very-detailed oriented and not afraid to speak my mind when I think a situation should be approached in a different manner than the one presented. Everyone at work tells me that I am not afraid to speak my mind but that they prefer it because they do not have to guess what I am thinking. Limiting Style The limiting style that I have chosen that I believe might be working against me is the Oppositional trait. The reason that I chose this is because my score ranged into the 57 percentile which was the lowest in my LSI results. The result of this style can limit my professional effectiveness in the organization I work in because as the description of the results state I do not want people at my place of work to believe that I will deliberately try to find a flaw in their work and much less make them feel uncomfortable around me and think it’s on purpose. This seems as negative attention that I really do not need at work or anywhere altogether. A behavior associated with this style that I would like to change is not letting people to close to me. A lot of times, I feel that I put up an invisible barrier where I do not let people get to close to me until I really get to know them which results in having few close relationships with people. ...Every manager supposed to know all of his strengths and weaknesses knowing that he/she will be dealing with people of all different behaviors. Knowing your strengths and weakness is the key asset to successfully manage an organization. For this purpose Dr. J. Clayton Lafferty developed The Life Style Inventory (LSI) for self-improving purposes for the reasons of increasing a personal and professional effectiveness. The LSI measures 12 specific styles of patterns of thinking that can either help or hinder a person from reaching his or her potential. The 12 styles measured by LSI are organized into three general clusters: Constructive, which includes: achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging, and affiliate thinking style. Passive/Defensive, which includes: approval, conventional, dependent, and avoidance thinking styles. Aggressive/Defensive, which includes: oppositional, power, competitive, and perfectionistic thinking styles. After honestly answering 240 questions I received the results that my primary personal style is achievement where I received the highest score of 95%. This style shows the following characteristics: focusing on achieving self-set goals, believes that individual effort counts, commits to make things better, take on challenging tasks and prefer to setting and accomplishing realistic goals rather than goals imposed by others. My secondary personal style is self-actualizing. This style shows the following characteristics: self-respect,......

...The LSI personality ``test was very impressive, especially the accuracy of my daily behavior styles. I think most people that intend on spending long periods of time dealing with the public and or directing and managing people for any long periods of time need to take this exercise. This exercise not only allows for you to understand behaviors, there is a better chance for you to also see why people do what they do. This exercise showed me in detail my behavior styles but also allowed me to see in further detail more than just the obvious way of being, this test allowed me to look in to more areas I hopefully develop. My strengths are power, self –Actualizing and conventional. Areas I may need to improve on are approval, avoidance and oppositional. I was surprise of the results that appear to be not very descriptive of me which included Competitive although the score was not tremendously high it does not appear low enough. Some of the key lessons learned in taking the LSI is, think about the question before you answer, and answer the questions honestly, these types of exercises are not only a benefit to you it’s a benefit for your work and your personal life as well. I have set some of the goal dates to look into a few of my behaviors that I would like to correct the most; they are within the 8, 6, and 10 O’ clock areas. I have set an attainable time frame to try and work on these areas not just because they showed up on the exercise but because they have been long......

...RUNNING HEAD: LSI Paper I am charged with the task of completing the Life Styles Inventory Survey to give a self-description of my thinking styles. The purpose of this assignment is to determine the impact that the personal styles have on my management style and to identify which one of my thinking styles may be reducing my overall effectiveness. After completing the survey, my circumplex shows that my primary thinking style is the “Conventional Style”(4 o’clock) and my backup thinking style is the “Power Style” (8 o’clock). I agree with the results of the conventional thinking style, but, I do not fully agree with the results of the power thinking style. According to the LSI results, the conventional thinking style is one that measures our inclination to act in a compliant way. Conventional thinkers worry about adhering to rules and established procedures. According to the LSI results, when we depend on on established procedures in determining how we do things, we risk losing our sense of uniqueness and individuality. I would have to agree with the results of this survey that I am a conventional thinker. As a child, my parents had very strict household rules that, simply, were not to my benefit to break. Therefore, I often abided by the rules. I think this is why I tend to do things strictly by the book. Doing things by the book gives me a sense of security in knowing that I followed the policy, in case something goes wrong. As a conventional thinker, I......

...after I completed the LSI( Life Style Inventory) assessment and read the results I had to pull myself away from my work to really think about my results. When I took the assessment I told myself I wanted to be as honest as I possible could, so perhaps I might get honest answers as to how I think and behave. Then answer question like, how do the ways I think and behave affect my management style for now and in the future? Knowing yourself is important to every aspect of your like. I spend a lot of time trying to get a better understanding for why I respond to certain situation in certain ways. For example, when, when I’m asked to do anything at work I immediately say, “no problem”. My coworkers jokingly call me the teacher’s pet or they say thinks like, “Your really trying to keep your job”. Some will even wink and say things like, “Job security”. I smile at their jest. I’m sure that it comes from a good place, but none of what they say can be further from the truth. I whole-heartedly want to do what ever it takes to help get the job done. Which is why I found the result of my LSI assessment so interesting. The LSI determined that my primary style of thinking is Constructive, which according to the LSI is a style of thinking that is self-enhancing and contributes to my satisfaction, ability to effectively work with others, develop healthy relationships, and to proficiently accomplish task. ...Life Styles Inventory Paper Title Page MGMT591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Student: Rodney Belk Dr. Kimberly Hunley May 15, 2016 After taking the lifestyles inventory interpretation test my primary and secondary personal thinking styles are more apparent to me. I have scored the highest in percentile of Oppositional and Power styles and very closely followed by perfectionist and competitive styles. My percentile scores in these areas were 99% for oppositional, 99% for power, and 95% for competitive. Regarding the primary style, oppositional, it is a very close perception of who I am. Taking the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) survey has really made me realized and confirm many things or styles that I've already knew about myself. On the Life Styles Inventory survey, I scored very high on the "Oppositional", "Power," “Perfectionist”, and "Competitive" styles of life. I strongly agree with this. I've always went about with that mindset. I can honestly say that for every decision I have ever made, I have taken these particular "styles" into consideration. At work as well as in my social life I have a strong tendency to be all of those things. I look at it as a way to survive. I believe in Darwin's concept of survival of the fitness idea. In order for me to live up to that belief, I need to be strong in a society that requires an individual to have those aspects in life. If you are weak, not driven, and make......

...LSI Paper Introduction The Life Style Inventory (LSI) is a survey in which one can identify their underlying thoughts and motivations that may shape their individual behaviors. The LSI is a series of self identifying questions which are scored and results tabulated. The results are scored in 3 major categories; constructive styles, passive/defensive styles, and aggressive/defensive styles. The three major categories are then broken down further into twelve subcategories. Enclosed will be a copy of the results of the LSI I have taken. Also, in the following, I will identify my primary and back up thinking styles and any styles that may be limiting my professional effectiveness and ways to overcome those obstacles. I will also discuss the impacts of my thinking styles on the four functions of management. Finally I will discuss how these thinking styles were developed in my life. Personal Thinking Styles My personal thinking style results varied and were extremely surprising. However, there were two particular areas which stood out the most. My primary thinking style is oppositional. This is a subcategory of the aggressive/defensive style. The oppositional style means that I tend to be aggressive and defensive when disagreeing with others. According to the results of the survey, I would rather put someone down in order to make myself feel better. Oppositional people also tend to have a strong need for recognition which may result in sarcastic responses. ......

That is exactly what I thought when I completed my Life Style Inventory and saw my report. In my life time I have taken a few self-evaluating, personality-leadership-management surveys and I must say I always learn something new about myself and witness growth and maturity. My LSI primary style is Affiliative with a score of 36 out of 40 and an 83 percentile. My results are shown in appendix 1. Both the high score and the high percentile tell me that this style strongly describes how I see myself and behave. The affiliative style falls in the constructive styles category. In general, this category measures our level of satisfaction, our ability to establish healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks. This style places high importance on family, friendship and business relationships. In my personal life it explains my dislike and avoidance of arguments and disagreements. I have been married 27 years, and yes I know it takes two to make it work but my high value of marriage makes me work harder at it. This style has shined a light on why people usually confine and trust me with their feelings. It takes me time to make a decision because I consider how other people are going to feel and be......
