Leadership and Power Paper
The Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half is an article about Ho Ching, the First Lady of Singapore. This paper will answer several question about Ho Ching’s influence based on the reading. It will answer whether or not Ho Ching is an influential leader and why or why not. It will answer what types of tactics she uses to influence others based on a portion of her speech. This paper will also provide answers about her sources of power and characterize her motives. Lastly this paper will answer whether or not managerial differences based on gender play a role in Ho Ching’s influence.
Is Ho Ching an influential leader? Why or why not?
Ho Ching is an influential leader based on the reading passage. She is influential because she is the wife of Singapore’s Prime minister. This means that she has the ear of one of the nation’s most powerful men on an almost daily basis. Ho Ching says that she and her husband engage in spirited debates because they do not always agree. By engaging in these debates, she attempts to influence her husband’s opinion. Ho Ching is also influential because of her position as the chief executive of Temasek Holdings where she manages a portfolio of $50 billion. She acquired this position through influence gained from education, experience and in part through family connections. Ho Ching has the power to influence many markets throughout Asia as the chief executive of a powerful holding firm.
Based on the excerpt from Ho Ching’s speech, what type of tactics did she use to influence the behavior of others?
Ho Ching uses inspirational appeals, ingratiation, and rational persuasion to influence listeners during her speech. Ho Ching says “the sparkle is beginning to return” to Asia. Ching intends to inspire pride in the resurgence of Asia as an economic power. Calling Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore the “four Asian Tigers” is ingratiating to the members of these countries because Ho Ching acknowledges them specifically as powerful. Ho Ching mentions that Singapore’s trade with India has grown over 50%, and they have enjoyed a respectable CAGR of 7.5 percent. This statement is an example of rational persuasion. Ching uses these numbers to show that Singapore has traded successfully with India and that others can share similar success.
What are her main sources of power?
Ho Ching gained influence through her education and experience. However, her power stems from her husband Lee Hsien Loong and his powerful father Lee Kwan Yew. The connections of her powerful in-laws landed her the job of the chief officer for Temasek. She now wields substantial power due to her position as the leader of one of Asia’s most powerful companies.
How would you characterize Ho Ching’s motives?
Ho Ching’s motives can be characterized as high need for socialized power. Ho Ching’s motives would be characterized as high need because she chose to take the highly influential positions of the First Lady of Singapore and the chief executive of Temasek. Both of these roles show that she wants to exert a high level of influence over many people. Her motives can also be described as socialized. Based on the reading, Ho Ching’s decisions are intended to better Singapore, Temasek, and the Asian financial community.
What role, if any, does managerial differences based on gender play here?
Ho Ching displays some of the managerial differences based on gender based on her speech. She seems to be focused on the broad interests of her company. Her speech imploring investment in India appears to be a selfless attempt to bolster trade in Asia.
Conclusion
This paper identified Ho Ching as an influential leader and explained why she is. It examined the influential tactics she used in the excerpt from her speech. This paper also answers where Ho Ching derives her power from and characterizes her motivations. Ho Ching is more than just a First Lady. She is the top executive of one of Asia’s most powerful organizations. Her decision have an impact on Asia’s economy and thereby the world.…...

...Positive Influence Plans for Business Teams LDR/531 October 15, 2012 Positive Influence Plans for Business Teams Teams are an important part of an organization. The team process creates an environment that allows employees to respect one another and work cohesively to meet an objective or goal that the organization has assigned (Michael, 2012). Michael (2012) defines “TEAM” as “Together Each Achieve More” because teams are composed of individuals with specific skills, knowledge, and levels of abilities; each will achieve more if there is positive influence and understanding throughout the duration of the project in a team environment (p. 21). Understanding of Teams Can Lead to Positive Influence A project has been assigned to your department with a completion anticipated within one year. The organization has decided to form a team to be responsible for accomplishing the objectives of the project in which the collective knowledge can be gathered, documented, and delivered in a thorough efficient manner. It is important that the team has adequate resources, leadership and structure, climate of trust, as well as some form of incentive or reward systems to keep motivation throughout the project (Robbins & Judge, 2011). The team has to understand the abilities, personalities, roles, and importance of diversity that can affect the dynamics of the team performance (Robbins & Judge, 2011). ...Leadership and Power Nathaniel Thomas LDR/300 August 13, 2013 Alan Preizer Leadership and Power Mini Case Ms. Ho Ching’s influence as a leader is reflected in the changes within the organization to disclose its annual report along with performance details that were FYI to Temasek executives only. Her appeal to investors, “to look to India for opportunities for Asian growth” is demonstrated in the account of the conference of Indian companies. Additionally, her determination to influence investors in Singapore to expand their economic concerns by investing in India, continually progresses forward. Hope for sustained progress continues August 1, 2013 when former cabinet minister and former NTUC Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Boon takes over as chairman of Temasek Holdings.” (Ramesh, Y2013 ar, 1). Based on the excerpt from Ho Ching’s speech, she uses a number of influence tactics. When she points to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis her approach is rational persuasion, “But that sparkle is beginning to return” is an inspirational appeal. The ingratiation and inspiration comes when she states, “Now is India’s turn.” Ching employing the tactic of exchange continues by stating Singapore’s trade with India which grew 50 percent since 1997. ...Week 3: Leadership and Power Paper LDR/300 The Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half Mini Case Ho Ching, the wife Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s current prime minister and son of a founding father of the country, is the Chief Executive Officer at Temasek Holdings; who according to the text, “was ranked 18th of Asia Most Powerful Business People and 24th of Forbes World's Most Powerful Women” (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2009). While this demonstrates the power capacity of Ho Ching as a leader; it does not establish the level of influence that she commands or her skills to apply influential tactics necessary to be able to modify followers’ attitudes and behaviors in the desired direction. In order to determine whether Ho Ching is an influential and competent leader or simply a positional leader; one must review and establish what are the sources of power that she possess, as well as her individual characteristics, and her capacity to apply the influence tactics to change the attitudes, values and behaviors of others. Ho Ching is a Stanford-educated electrical engineer, this in itself already demonstrates that Ho Ching is an intelligent individual, and intelligence is a commonly used characteristic to describe potential leaders. Furthermore, according to Nahavandi (2009), “It is clear that the complex task of leading requires a person with cognitive ability to remember, collect, and integrate information, analyze problems, develop solutions, and......

Leadership Paper

...Leadership and Power Paul E Fultz LDR/300 April 28, 2015 Glenn Nelson Leadership and Power Leadership and power are terms commonly used in business relations and these terms are often interconnected. There has been an ongoing debate about the differences between leadership, management, and power. In addition, to be an effective leader it is vital to understand and try to express these distinctions as well as understand the significant role of power in leadership. Power can be described as a person or entity with much control, authority, and/or influence over other people or organizations. The premise of power can be directly related to leadership due in part to the influence process. It can also be said that power is the ability or probability to influence. “People have power when they have the ability to affect others’ beliefs, attitudes, and courses of action. Ministers, doctors, coaches, and teachers are all examples of people who have the potential to influence us. When they do, they are using their power, the resource they draw on to effect change in us” (Northouse, 2013). So these different types of positions within different career fields (doctors, ministers, etc) each have a certain amount of power related to a certain level of leadership. The level of each one’s power and leadership, whether high or low, can be directly associated with how influential they are. Authority also comes into play when one speaks of power, leadership, and influence tactics.......

...Leadership Approach Paper Leadership Approach Paper Cathy M. Espy-Cook LDR/531 Organizational Leadership December 6, 2011 Bobby Bates Leadership Approach Paper Leadership is a subject that has long excited interest among people. The term connotes images of powerful, dynamic individuals who command victorious armies, direct corporate empires from atop gleaming skyscrapers, or shape the course of nations (Yukl, p. 1, 2010). Behaviors are an important approach in leadership. Working as a manager in an organization leaves much opportunity to view outstanding leadership behaviors as well as bad leadership behaviors. In observations poor leadership took a reactive approach in areas of multi-tasking the managers often pushing their work off on other supervisors he or she managed or employees that he or she knew would get the job done with no questions ask. Poor leaders need to begin with the basics in knowing what defines leadership. One common indicator of leader effectiveness is the extent to which the performance of the team or organizational unit is enhanced and the attainment of goals is facilitated. (Yukl, p. 10. 2010). Strength of the behavior approach to leadership is a wide scope of what a leader does in certain situations. There are a variety of studies with creditable research that agree with the behavior approach to leadership. The behavior approach to leadership can be divided into two categories task and relationship. Engaging in a proactive......
