Kudler Fine Foods:
Human Resources Focus
Introduction
Kudler Fine Foods is a specialty food store serving local consumers in the San Diego, California area. The company was founded by Kathy Kudler in 1998. Its three stores, located in fashionable shopping centers in the California cities of La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas, offer upscale, gourmet domestic and imported foods and ingredients. Each store contains the following departments: Cheeses and Specialty Diary Products, Condiments and Packaged Foods, Fresh Bakery and Pastries, Fresh Meat and Seafood, and Fresh Produce (Kudler, 2012).
Human Resources (HR) for the company is very disjointed and segmented, with no centralization of employee files and records. Some of the records are maintained in the individual stores, while others are kept in the HR Department at company headquarters. Payroll and workers’ compensation processes are handled by third-party vendors. Time sheets are completed manually and there is no automated record of vacation or other leave time (Kudler, 2012).
Information technology (IT) can be used to streamline the HR functions and processes at Kudler, making them more efficient and accessible. This paper will discuss just a few of the possible ways in which IT can specifically support these functions and processes.
Human Resource Management System
Kudler would certainly benefit from the acquisition and implementation of a Human Resource Management System (HRMS). Use of such a system would enable the company to maintain all employee records and files in one location at headquarters, while still allowing store managers and supervisors access to any data for which they have approval to view. The use of an HRMS would allow Kudler to…...

...Running head: KUDLER FINE FOODS: HR FOCUS Kudler Fine Foods: HR Focus Name School Business Systems II 502 Instructor Date Kudler Fine Foods: HR Focus Kudler Fine Foods is owned and operated by Kathy Kudler. It is a local upscale specialty food store that provides high quality domestic and imported foods. In the San Diego metropolitan area, the company has three locations; in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas. La Jolla is the Kudler Fine Foods headquarters. With Kudler’s current growth, the store is in need for an upgrade to their Human Resources (HR) management system (Apollo Group Inc, 2012). To get an idea as to what Kudler Fine Foods requires in a new HR system, an understanding of the store chain’s current system will be needed. For Kudler’s payroll system, the store uses Quick Books and outsources the processing of payroll to Intuit. Intuit tracks each employee’s information in their own database, which includes (Apollo Group Inc, 2012): * Personal information, such as name, address, marital status, birth date, etc. * Pay rate * Personal exemptions for tax purposes * Hire date * Seniority date (which is sometimes different than the hire date) * Organizational information (store for budget purposes, manager’s name, etc.) If there are any changes that are required of an employee’s records, the employee’s supervisor must submit a form in writing, where an accounting clerk with Intuit can enter the changes in their system. ...Kudler Fine Foods Operations Focus This paper will define how Kudler Fine Foods can benefit from Internet purchasing and how this new system and process will be implemented. This paper begins by analyzing Kudler’s current purchasing processes and systems and makes recommendations to systems and processes that Kudler could use to improve their current processes. Incorporating an Internet-based purchasing system would add convenience and provide Kudler with sustaining a robust customer and supplier relationship. Currently Kudler has no purchasing department in any of their locations but standard purchasing procedures have been implemented. Currently each department manager in each location determines requirements for the items his or her department sells. These managers place purchase orders directly with suppliers using standard purchase order forms in each location. Departmental managers have the responsibility to obtain the best price, quality, and delivery possible. Managers also receive and verify the orders to decipher if they received the correct items and quantities that arrived in undamaged condition. Items are documented on an order received form and forwarded to accounting in order for the invoices on the items to be paid (Kudler Fine Foods website, 2011). The department managers at each location must check with their counterparts in other locations on the pricing, quality, and delivery of the merchandise they order. Managers are also encouraged to combine......

...Operations Focus: Kudler Fine Foods Carlos M. BSA/502 Business Systems II August 18th , 2013 Paula Billups It is said that the internet has become an advantage for Small business to compete with the bigger corporations in many ways. However- not many Small Businesses have taken advantage of such a great resource to its full advantage. Many things can be done on the internet, such as verifying different supplier pricing as well as possibly setting up an automatic delivery, the options are limitless. In one of the first proposals to Kudler Fine Foods, we explained the advantages of considering an online inventory vendor. While trying to increase revenue, Kudler Fine Foods must also consider cost reduction. In dealing with fresh produce or food in general, food storage is critical. We must be able to deliver to the consumer fresh produce while minimizing food storage, at the same time of not running out or having a zero stock store policy. This can be a difficult task at hand, however by partnering with a company such as Clearlyinventroy.com and implementing a specific program to allow an auto shipping of a product or produce once it reaches a certain amount; we can expect this to help minimize the loss of products. Now Clearly Inventory only assists in the process of stocking the inventory, it does not in any way actually have the products to sell to Kudler, however that is where another advantage of using the internet comes into play. There are many vendors......

The management and owners of Kudler Fine Foods Stores, in keeping with the standards and attitudes set forth in their mission statement are in the beginning processes of initiating a frequent shopper program throughout the entire Kudler fine food organization. Once in place this new frequent shopper program will enhance the company’s ability to analysis its customers’ in-store purchasing behavior by tracking how many times an individual consumer is in the store within any particular week, month, or year. The program will automatically track those items, which are purchased during those visits, and in what quantities those items are purchased by that specific customer. This information, which is critical to inventory control and would be used by the management team and Kathy Kudler in their monthly operations review meetings to maintain customer service levels, control excessive merchandise, and curtail inventory stock outs (Virtual Organizations Portal, 2007). The competition’s customers have access to goods by way of retail locations as well as online stores therefore it is imperative that Kudler Fine Foods develop a strategic plan to be able to compete in a global marketplace. There are areas to look in to in order to be able to keep up with competition and even surpass them. There are unlimited options for consumers in this day and age of technology and the global marketplace. One option that would need to be taken is to introduce stores in several countries. The initial investment would be costly and it would take some detailed planning to coordinate a plan for expansion. ...Kudler Fine Foods is a gourmet grocery store located in Southern California established in 1998 by Kathy Kudler. Kudler Fine Foods currently has three locations, and they are planning on opening a fourth location and consolidating the third stores with the new one. The company also plans on expanding to San Francisco, and other areas outside of the state of California in the next 5-10 years. Although Kathy has a passion for food and her clientele, she lacks experience in management and organization, as well as financial matters. The three stores are currently being run by Kathy, and a store manager and assistant manager at each store. Kathy visits the three stores daily and makes all the final decisions personally. Currently they do not have a website, and they are not electronically tracking orders, monthly earnings or spendings. This lack of use of technology makes tracking this information time consuming and difficult. Kathy also does all the purchasing herself, and since Kudler Fine Foods is dealing with mainly perishables, tracking inventory becomes a huge consideration. At this time, there is no contingency plan if Kathy gets ill and is unable to personally tend to the business. “All organizations need to have contingency plans for Unexpected events. Note the chaos in New Orleans when hospitals and other organizations were not prepared for a major hurricane” (Nickels, McHugh, & McHugh, 2008, p. 189). Problem statement: Kathy Kudlers’ lack of trust is prohibiting......

...Kudler Fine Foods Operations Focus Ian Solace BSA/502 April 16, 2012 Christine Lin Kudler Fine Foods Operations Focus Kudler Fine Foods is a growing, upscale food retailer that currently uses exclusively manual processes to place orders for all of its products. In an effort to help streamline practices and increase profitability, it is recommended that Kudler move toward an Internet-based mode of ordering and fulfilling stock. This type of ordering system could save Kudler both time and money as well as reducing inaccuracies inherent in the manual ordering process. Current Ordering System Currently, there is no central purchasing department for the string of three stores. It is the responsibility of each of the three department managers within each store to determine requirements for the items in their departments and to place purchase orders directly with suppliers (Apollo Group, Inc., 2011). The department managers are required to fill out a standard, manual purchase order form for each order as well as receive and manually verify each shipment as it comes in. To place an order, these forms must be mailed, faxed, e-mailed, or even handed to suppliers (Apollo Group, Inc., 2011). These forms then become the primary tracking and financial documents for all merchandise orders (Apollo Group, Inc., 2011). This vast amount of paperwork must be maintained and stored in the accounting department to ensure vendors are paid. Another hurdle exists in that each department...
