1.The role of an innovation leader is to instill a communal feeling among the group they are leading. Doing so will aid in the process of forming new ideas. The group must share a sense of purpose, values, and rules of engagement. This is not always an easy task because there are different approaches to successfully doing this job. Innovation usually involves a diverse set of people. The innovation leader has to figure out a way to bring these people together and find some common ground. However, people with differing views/opinions are not willing to come to agreements right away. Innovation leaders must observe the group and the situation, then act accordingly in order to create a "community". One of the biggest challenges an innovation leader faces is keeping a balance between allowing ideas to flow freely and being confrontational.
2.Direction-setting is a style of leadership in which the leader sets a vision and then motivates others to follow it. This style does not work for leading innovation. It actually prohibits innovation by setting one certain goal and aiming for it. Innovation is about people within a group/industry coming together and bouncing ideas off of each other in order to create even better ideas. If there is already a vision in place, there is no incentive for people within the group to come up with new ideas. They will simply be focused on that one vision. There are instances when direction-setting leadership is necessary. For example, this may be necessary at a company that knows what it's position is in the industry and wants to remain that way. If this is the case, there is already a vision that people within the company should be aiming for. However, if companies want to evolve and continue to be innovative, this leadership style will not work.
