Transformational Leadership Models: Level 5 Leadership

...Transformational Leadership Models: Level 5 Leadership Abstract Level 5 leadership is one of several models of the transformational leadership theory developed by Burns and Bass among others during the later part of the last century. Level 5 leadership originated as a result of the research done by Jim Collins (2001) about how some companies transformed from good to great. It was found that the chief factor provoking such transformation was the presence of a leader mixing great humility and extreme resolve, which became to be the definition of a Level 5 leader. Level 5 leadership works best when combined with other elements also identified by Collins (2001). Some people are born with the “Level 5 seed” and some others don’t, but it will be the environment that at the end will determine if the characteristic of a Level 5 leader will flourish within an individual. Transformational Leadership Models: Level 5 Leadership Given that Level 5 leadership is a transformational leadership model, before going into details about it, and so as to establish some background, the next paragraphs will briefly touch upon the fundamentals of the transformational leadership theory. Transformational Leadership Transformational, sometimes also referred as transforming (especially in older texts and documents), leadership was originally mentioned by James V. Downton in his 1973 book Rebel Leadership: Commitment and Charisma in the Revolutionary Process. Following further development, in......

Level 5 Leadership

...Level 5 Leadership The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve A] Verghese Kurien – called the “Father of White Revolution” in India – There are some amazing leaders around world who never cease to inspire me. After reading the article on Level – 5 leadership, one name that immediately came to my mind was of Varghese Kurien who revolutionized milk production in India. Humility + will = level 5 Verghese Kurien (1921 – 2012) was a leader of remarkable vision, creativity and compassion. He came to a small town in Gujarat named ‘Anand’ to serve on a government bond since the government had sponsored his education abroad. During this time the local dairy farmers in Anand were being exploited by large diaries and did not get their fair share of milk price. This was compounded by an inefficient way to get their milk to the market. This is the time when India’s demand for Milk was increasing. They were the second largest importers of milk. Kurien was touched by the plight of the farmers. Kurien also saw this as an opportunity rather than accepting the situation as it is. He truly believed in transforming the lives of the farmers through a business model which can be run as a self-sustained engine – a true trait of a leader to think a long way ahead much beyond his times! He setup a dairy co-operative and insisted that farmers buy a pasteurizing machine; the investment which totally paid off. Milk could reach big cities without getting spoilt and the co-operatives flourished. The......

...Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Assignment 1 Becoming an Effective Leader Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Assignment 1 Becoming an Effective Leader AC 1.1 – Evaluate your own ability to use a range of leadership styles, in different situations and with different types of people, to fulfil the leadership role. Having reflected on my own leadership style, I have thought about the way in which as a leader, I have historically led a team. Over the years working within a nursing background I found it difficult to be a specific type of leader due to the thinking that as a nurse you never led, you were a manager that was led. I was far from the truth… I have worked with very different people from all levels of abilities from cleaners through to consultant doctors and have led differently depending on the person I am leading. A scenario I can recall was a time when I instructed a cleaner to decontaminate a side room ready for another patient to occupy. I used a Delegation style approach to the task and 4 hours later, I found the task was not completed due to poor time management by the cleaner. This had a negative consequence of delaying another patient’s admission to the unit until the task was completed and caused conflict between myself and the cleaner as she had not undertaken the task I had set. The positives of this leadership style so I thought, were not to dictate to her what she has to do, but to allow her to lead......

...Identify factors that will influence your choice of leadership styles and explain why your leadership styles are likely to positively affect your team. Before we look at what leadership styles there are it is important to define what the difference is between management and leadership. The biggest difference between managers and leaders is the way they motivate people to follow them. Managers have a position within the organisation, their teams work for them to complete tasks and in turn manage situations as they occur. Leaders on the other hand do not have teams when they are leading. Instead, formal control is given up, as to lead is have followers and this is always a voluntary activity. Telling people what to do does not inspire them to follow, rather than to be effective they must want to follow. Kurt Lewin (1939) led a group of researchers to identify different styles of leadership. While further research has identified more specific types of leadership, this early study was very influential and established three major leadership styles. • Authoritarian or autocratic • Participative or democratic • Delegative or laissez-fair Although good leaders use all three styles, with one of them normally dominant, bad leaders tend to stick with one style. When doing my own research into leadership styles I found that we now recognise and use four main subtitles which are: authoritative, consultative, supportive and......

308-Understanding Leadership (Ilm)

...Understand leadership styles Effective leadership is a vital necessity in any organisation. It has been proven that leadership within a business produces the most effective and efficient structure for generating productivity and profitability and is therefore essential in ensuring the smooth running of any organisation. Leadership is about getting people to appreciate and have trust in your vision so that they work with you to accomplish your objectives. Managing is more about directing and making sure that the day-to-day essential duties are being carried out effectively. The main difference between leaders and managers is that leaders have people who follow them while managers have people who work for them. A good manager will have strong leadership skills. There are a number of factors which can influence leadership styles, for example personality traits, level of control, organisational structure, and experience. Dependent on whether a leader is outgoing and self-confident or more reserved will influence which leadership style they choose. An outgoing leader will more than likely prefer to communicate face to face with their team members, whether that be as a group or on an individual basis, however a more reserved character would probably be more at ease meeting team members on a one to one basis potentially relying on written communication as opposed to face to face. The level of control which a leader wishes to maintain will also influence leadership......

The senior management team also have KPI’s which feed into team leaders, then technicians and then again into the graded staff on the shop floor. The site sets objectives for staff in March via a sit down dialogue session between the person concerened and there immediate supervisor, these should be a mutual agreed set of objectives that are SMART, however in reality the management simply hand down their own objectives in a watered down version, or part thereof, to each person so that they can achieve their own objectives and get their bonuses. This is then simply rolled out again by the person watering down these objectives to their subortdinates and so on. People on site then have a review in July and a close down dialogue in March followed by a new set of objectives for the coming year in march again. Level 5 Leadership

...THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE ORGANIZATION BEST OF HBR 2001 If there's one management expert who is synonymous with the term "highperformance organization," it is Jim Collins, who has spent the past 20 years trying to understand how some companies are able to sustain superlative performance. It may seem surprising that of the seven factors Collins identified as essential to take a company from good to great, he chose to focus on leadership in this 2O01 piece. However, even a casual rereading of the article will convince you that he was right to do so. Collins argues that the key ingredient that allows a company to become great is having a Level 5 leader: an executive in whom genuine personal humility blends with intense professional will. To learn that such CEOs exist still comes as a pleasant shock. But while the idea may sound counterintuitive today, it was downright heretical when Collins first wrote about it-the corporate scandals in the United States hadn't broken out, and almost everyone believed that CEOs should be charismatic, larger-than-life figures. Collins was the first to blow that belief out of the water. Level 5 Leadership TheTriumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve by Jim Collins What catapults a company from merely good to truly great? A five-year research project searched for the answer to that question, and its discoveries ought to change the v^ay we think about leadership. I n 1971, a seemingly ordinary man med Darwin E. Smith was named......
