How Lucky You Are

...How Lucky You Are Whenever I hear the word lucky, the first thing that comes to my mind is winning the lottery. Winning in the lottery would mean a life filled with luxury. It would mean that I could live in a big fancy house with ocean view. I could drive my Ferrari to work, if I actually bothered to work. I never think of how lucky I already am, even though I never have won the lottery. I live in a country where I am safe. I wake up every day and know that I will get food and be able to wear some nice cloths. This is not the case for everyone. In some countries, you never know what to expect when you wake up. You could be shot because there is war, or you could starve because your family cannot afford food. Some of the people who live under these conditions try to immigrate to another country. Sometimes the immigrant is completely alone without any family, because the family is unable to run away from the country. If the immigrant then succeeds their immigration they do not know anything about their family anymore. For all they know they could be dead. This is what the story “How Lucky You Are” from 2010 by Depi Alper is about. The story takes place in the urban environment of South London in Corydon where the main character named Max lives. Max is a troubled teenager who lives with his mom. Max’ father left to find himself. Max hates him for this mainly because he could hear his mother cry weeks after the father left: “Yeah right, Dad. That's why I heard her crying......

There are five types of organizational power: reward, coercive, expert, legitimate and referent. Reward and coercive power are commonly used within organizations. However the use of these two together can decrease the power of the individuals over time. 5 Types of Managerial Powers in ME: by Justin Johnson, Demand Media Businesses are run by people in power. There are, however, different kinds of power that allow those wielding them to use varying approaches and methods with varying degrees of effectiveness. There are five basic types of power in business, and it is important to learn how to recognize each type, and how to use each type effectively in business situations.   Coercive Power Coercive power is the most primitive type of power in the workplace. Coercive power exists when a person in authority threatens a subordinate with some type of punishment if a certain duty or activity is not completed or performed correctly. It is important to note that coercive power is used most effectively in scenarios where the business is in a crisis or is somehow threatened. Coercive power can also be used effectively when attempting to make cuts in personnel as a result of management shifts and transitions. Legitimate Power Legitimate power exists when the subordinates of someone in authority comply with orders given to them because they......

How Lucky You Are

...First; sorry if the english isn't completely right. English is not my native language, so I've done my best. How Lucky You Are is a short story written by Debi Alper in 2010. The story takes place in Britain, more precisely in the southern part of London . In the beginning of the short story the main character, Max, is in his room. He is thinking back to the day his father left Max and his mother and back to the day he met Ishraqi – an Iranian girl who in a few hours changes Max’ life. This part of the story takes place at the UK Borders Agency. This place is an important part of the story because it is here he meets Ishraqi, who has an appointment there, and it is here his life changes. The short story is written in past tense, and the narrator is a third person that is all knowing, because the narrator knows what Max is thinking . The short story consists of three parts; the first part is where Max is home and is thinking back to when his father left him and his mother. The second part is where Max is thinking back to the day he met Ishraqi and the third part is where Max comes home to his mother and is completely changed because of Ishraqi. Max is a 16-year-old boy who did not care about school. He wanted to take as few exams as possible. He goes to a school named The Brit School. It is a school for performing arts and technology. It was the ideal school for Max, but he found it boring with subjects like Maths and English . He did admit though that The Brit School...

How Lucky You Are

...Terminsprøve - Delprøve 2 ”And know always how lucky you are”. That was what the woman, Alexsa, told Max, the main character in the short story “How Lucky You Are” written by Debi Alper in 2010, after they had realized that Ishraqi, an Iran girl, who Max has just meet, and felt in love with, was going back to Iran, where her life would be in danger, and she is in ignorance if her parents are alive, or where they are to be found. But what does Alexsa mean when she say, that Max will have to always know how lucky he is? And I wonder how it would fell when someone you love is reluctant leaving you forever and there are nothing you can do about it? The story presents a tense, but exciting relationship between two young teenagers; Max and Ishraqi. Common to both of them, is that they seem to be outgoing persons, smiling and obliges to new acquaintances. Ishraqi seems to be a mental strong character; “I do not even know where my parents are or if they are still alive”. Clearly she is moved by the ignorance about her parents, but she has managed to live on, and she is trying to build a new future, far away from Iran, in which her future looks dark and are not existing. She can still smile, enjoy and express love although the things she has been through has left vestige inside her. She too seems to be willing to open up, tell her personal story to somebody she just met, tells that she is an outgoing, trusting person. Max kind of has more, different types of......

How Do You Think

... HOW DO YOU THINK MARION HODLE LACKAWANNA COLLEGE ABSTRACT Are you a creative thinker? Can you be inspired to write or draw from a walk through a museum? Can you come up with a few good ideas from just lying in the grass at the park? If this is the way your mind works and how you go about solving problems then you’re a creative thinker. If you get inspirations or some of your best answers by looking up facts, reading up on subjects and linking information you already know to be true, you’re a critical thinker. Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally. It’s a persons ability to engage in independent thinking. They can understand logical concepts between ideas, like linking thoughts. They can identify and construct arguments and detect common mistakes in reasoning over things. Creative thinking involves solving problems systematically. It also includes the identification and importance of ideas. Critical thinking can reflect on a person’s beliefs and values. Critical thinking is not based on how much a person knows. Even if you have a good memory and know a lot of facts it still does not mean you are a good critical thinker. A good critical thinker knows how to use his knowledge to solve problems and seek relevant sources of information. Critical thinking does not mean a person is critical or argumentative. It can also play a role in cooperation and reasoning. We use critical thinking to enhance our social situations. Some people...

How Self Aware Are You?

...How Self-Aware Are You? In the article The Manager’s Job: Folklore and Fact (1990), Henry Mintzberg describes managerial work as a set of different roles which include interpersonal, informational and decisional roles. Managers are entitled to formal authority and their role is important and interdependent with others both inside and outside the organization. As managers become the “nerve of the organizational unit” (p.169), they get an opportunity to obtain information from their interpersonal relations. They will process this information to make a decision for the organization. Introspective and self-aware are important characteristics that relates to effective management. The main focus should be on manager’s understanding and response “to the pressures and dilemmas of the job” (p.173). As managers face with new challenges, assistance is unavailable from management science so they tend to rely on their intuition to find solutions. For instance, managers need to find ways to improve the production process in response to technological obsolescence. A manager who has an introspective personality is more likely to enhance his learning and perform his duties effectively. On the other hand, the article titled “Managing Oneself” by Peter Drucker (2005) is based on deep understanding of an individual’s strengths, performances, values, interpersonal skills, belongingness, and greatest contribution. With response to the five questions posed by the author, I have done a......

...figures, the following observations may be made: (Insert Figures 2, 3, 4a and 4b here) (1) In all sample countries (except India and Philippines), the share of working-age population in total population will decline significantly between 2005 and 2050. -7- In 2005, in only India and the Philippines, the share of working-age population was 60 per cent or below; but by 2050, only these two countries will have the share above 60 per cent. In 2050, Japan, Korea, Spain, Italy8 and Germany will have less than half of the population in the working-age category, while in other sample countries, the share will range between 50 and 60 per cent. (2) The largest declines will occur in Japan, Korea, and China. The case of Japan illustrates how rapidly the demographic trends translate into working-age population share. Thus, in 1990 Japan’s working-age population share at 70 per cent was substantially higher than that of US and UK; but by 2010, Japan’s share is expected to be much lower and the gap is likely to widen significantly (Sanyal, 2005). There is a strong case for the rapidly ageing northeast Asian countries to explore opportunities for expanding their economic space with countries such as India (as well as Philippines) which will exhibit rising working-age population share. The OECD countries, particularly UK and US are already well-disposed to taking advantage of such demographic complementarities. But Japan and South Korea, and to a lesser extent Europe,......

How Unethical Are You?

...are asked this question How ethical are you? They usually reply that they are ethical but you are probably not. We sometimesmake unethical decisions unconsciously. This article explains four related sources of unintentional unethical decision making. They are implicit forms of prejudice, bias that favors one's own group, conflict of interest and overclaiming credit. Implicit forms of prejudice is also known as unconscious stereotypes and attitudes towards people. In the mid 1990's professor Tony Greenwald (university of Washington) developed a tool called Implicit Association Test (IAT). This test exposes your decisions making based on race, gender, religion and so on. Bias that favors your group. We have probably all done this. Referred a friend, or relative to get a job. We tend to do favors for those that are similiar to us. Perhaps same race, religion, employer or attend the same school. This is called in group favoritism. While discriminating these who are different from us is consider un-ethical. We tend to judge African Americans, Arabs, poor, gays and lesbians. On the contrary, 75% of testakers (IAT) will choose the young, rich and white. Conflict of interest can lead to intentionally corrupt behavior. Experiments show how powerful such conflicts can unintentionally change decision making. Several examples are a physician accepting payments from clinical trials, lawyers fees based on their clients settlements. Overclaiming credit is when you give yourself too much......

... 24 Hours Media Fast Most people get scared of fasts and never want to do them, but not me. I was actually very excited for this fast having any form social media. During this 24 hours fasting I have given up all social media excluding phone calls and texting. Once the fast got going, I don’t think I realized how long fast would be though. But I made it through the 24hours and I learned a couple of things along the way.                   Although I wish I could say I made it through 24hours without any struggles, I would be lying if I said that. But that should be expected from most people as no one can simply make it through something like this without a little bit of struggles.                  My mood worsened and I became more lethargic. My thoughts were shaming and I began to question taking a career path that requires I stay active on social media. I shamed myself for not pursuing a career of substance and contribution. I wasn’t using the extra time for constructive activities; I was feeling sorry for myself. I missed communicating with the people I follow. I missed sharing my disconnected thoughts on Twitter. At my lowest point, I just wanted to sign on to Facebook to read status updates from people who think the Onion is a real news outlet. I missed the feeling of tumbling down the internet’s rabbit hole at 3am, just like any good addict misses their drug of choice. The question I was left to answer was this: If I don’t share my life on social media, does Wit &......

...............................................................30 References ..............................................................................................31 Grading Systems at the Secondary Level, p.3 Abstract Educators employ grading systems to assess and to evaluate the knowledge students have gained from a lesson, unit, or course of instruction. The grades that are assigned by teachers are reported to many audiences as communication of students’ achievement. Given the centrality of grades for many important audiences, it is crucial that grading systems are reliable. The purpose of this study was to examine teacher practices and philosophy when assessing student achievement. This research was framed by two questions 1) “How much inconsistency exists in grading systems in a suburban high school?” and 2) “Do inconsistencies in the grading systems of teachers make grades unreliable?” This proposal involved researching the grading practices of approximately 80 teachers in a medium-size suburban high school. The primary source of data collection was through surveys. The data was analyzed for inconsistency among grading systems and reliability of assigned grades. The results of the surveys clearly revealed the inconsistencies that exist in the grading systems of the teachers in this suburban high school. What is equally clear, however, is that college admissions counselors are aware of the inconsistencies in grading systems both within and between schools, and......
