...Hardware and Software Firewalls Explained A firewall is a protective system that lies, in essence, between your computer network and the Internet. When used correctly, a firewall prevents unauthorized use and access to your network. The job of a firewall is to carefully analyze data entering and exiting the network based on your configuration. It ignores information that comes from an unsecured, unknown or suspicious locations. A firewall plays an important role on any network as it provides a protective barrier against most forms of attack coming from the outside world. Firewalls can be either hardware or software. The ideal firewall configuration will consist of both. In addition to limiting access to you computer and network, a firewall is also useful for allowing remote access to a private network through secure authentication certificates and logins. While many people do not completely understand the importance and necessity of a firewall, or consider it to be a product for businesses only, if your network or computer has access to the outside world via the Internet then you need have a firewall to protect your network, individual computer and data therein. Hardware Firewalls Hardware firewalls can be purchased as a stand-alone product but more recently hardware firewalls are typically found in broadband routers, and should be considered an important part of your system and network set-up, especially for anyone on a broadband connection. Hardware firewalls can be......

...HARDWARE Introduction The term computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer which by interconnection and synchronization make up the computer system. The hardware can be divided in two groups: parts that are found in the central unit – housing of the computer called components and external parts called peripheral units. There is a range of computer components, but we will mention the most important, explaining their function and role in the computer. We can point out the following basic elements of computer system: * Motherboard (mainboard) * Processor (CPU - central processing unit) * Memory (RAM - random acces memory) * Graphic Card * Audio Card (Sound card) * Hard Drive (HDD - hard disc drive) * CD-DVD ROM (Compact disc / Digital video drive-Read only memory) * Network card (LAN Adapter - locall area network adapter) * Modem (modulator-demodulator) * Power Supply (PSU - power supply unit) * Input-Output units (I / O) Each of the following elements have distinct and essential function and role in contributing to the work of the computer, depending on the quality and performance, hardware directly affects system performance. Preserving the compatibility of components is equally important as selecting the brand and quality. Each motherboard is not compatible with any graphics card, processor or memory, because there are different standards that are mostly defined by the manufacturer or are dictated by the...

Hardware Configurations

...NT1110 Unit 8: Video Summary 6 Hardware Configurations I watched 4 videos on Hardware Configuration. They were, in order, Device Manager, Driver Signing, Hardware Profile and Regional and Language Options. The 1st, Device Manager went over how to manage all your hardware devices. It covers how they are configured, their settings, drivers and resources. It’s found in System Properties. After this, was Driver Signing which is Microsoft’s way of confirming that its devices and drivers have been tested and are compatible with Microsoft’s operating system. Each driver and device is checked off in the System Properties verifying its authenticity. There is also driving signing options for hardware installations with software that is not Windows. They are Ignore, which means install anyway. Warn, which means the system will prompt you to choose and Block, which blocks unsigned software. The next video was Hardware Profile. This is a list of devices enabled at the start of a computer and loading into the operating system. It too is found in System Properties. It covered how to change your hardware profile. It’s usually used for laptops. We can change what devices our system uses 1st for instance, changing the network connections when traveling. The last video was Regional and Language Options. This is found on the Control Panel. Here, you can set language or choose how you want your numbers, currency, time and dates displayed. You can go to Customize to make changes.......

Hardware Failures

...Hardware Failure Transient faults, intermittent faults and Permanent faults are the three types of component errors. A transient deficiency happens once and then vanishes. In the event that the operation has repeated then the system will function typically. An irregular fault emerges, then goes away, surfaces again and the cycle repeats. A typical reason for an irregular interruption is a faulty or loose contact on a connector. These issues are frustrating and hard to maintain due to their intermittent behavior. Finally there are permanent faults created by faulty parts. The system will not function until the part is swapped. Worn out chips, programming bugs and processor errors are all patterns of undying flaws. Byzantine Failure The processor is special component, and it can fail in three ways, fail quietly, Byzantine and break. All lead to an alternate type of malfunction. A fail-stop, shortcoming happens when a processor quits working. It generally will not acknowledge inputs and will not output anything, with the exception of maybe to say it is no longer working. Byzantine liabilities happen when a flawed processor keeps on running, giving wrong answers and perhaps working with other defective processors to give the notion that they are working as they should. Compared with fail-silent errors, Byzantine issues are complex to diagnose and more complicated to manage. A slow-down fault happens when a certain processor executes slowly but surely. That processor may be......

...called Flash memory. It is also know as shadow RAM. It contains the following key components: 1.A microprocessor "socket" which defines what kind of central processing unit the motherboard uses. 2.A chipset which forms the computer's logic system. It is usually composed of two parts called bridges (a "north" bridge and its opposite, "south" bridge), which connects the CPU to the rest of the system; 3.A Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) chip which controls the most basic function of a computer, and how to repair it; and 4.A real-time clock which is a battery-operated chip which maintains the system's time, and other basic functions. The motherboard also has slots or ports for the attachment of various peripherals or support system/hardware. There is an Accelerated Graphics Port, which is used exclusively for video cards; Integrated Drive Electronics, which provides the interfaces for the hard disk drives; Memory or RAM cards; and Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), which provides electronic connections for video capture cards and network cards, among others....

Hardware and Software

...Hardware Hardware is the physical components that make up the electronic devices for example keyboards, mice, monitors etc. One main difference between hardware and software is that hardware can be touched and software cannot. RAM RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory. It is a type of memory that is most commonly found in computers and other devices such as printers. There are two types of RAM. Dynamic RAM and static RAM. The two types of RAM differ in the technology they use to hold data, with DRAM being the more common type. In terms of speed, SRAM is faster. DRAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second while SRAM does not need to be refreshed, which is what makes it faster than DRAM. Flash cards A flash card is a small data storage device that uses a flash memory chip to store data. Flash cards can be quite small in size, with a capacity of a few gigabytes of storage. The memory in these cards is non-volatile, so it does not require a power source to remain intact. Graphics tablet A graphics tablet is a piece of a hardware that is a computer input device. It allows you to make hand drawn images similar to that of a pencil and paper. It consists of a touch screen tablet and a stylus to draw. Monitor A monitor is like a small version of a TV. It displays the user interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact with the computer. Older computer monitors used Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) which made them large and heavy. Modern monitors are...

Hardware and Software

...Industry-related computer systems are an important aspect of every business. Every company’s system has specific features that differ from other companies. The two main aspects that make up a company’s computer systems are software and hardware. Depending on the type of company, their software and hardware may be high-end, or low-end. In regards to my company, I usually use high-end software and hardware. Running an online retail store requires the use of many programs at once. Although running an online store might not seem like much work, it requires a great deal of attention. Using high-end hardware and software places my company at an advantage. According to Technology Guide 1: Computer Hardware, the author states, “In many industries, exploiting computer hardware is a key to achieving competitive advantage” (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011, Technology Guide 1: Computer Hardware). Business System Specifications In regard to my company’s personal computing software and hardware, we use several devices that run off different applications. One of the hardware devices we use is a phone system called MagicJack. “Magicjack is a device about the size of your thumb which plugs into a USB drive in your computer” (Block, 2010, para. How does the magic work?). This hardware device requires a software application to be installed on our computers that enable a phone to be connected to receive phone-calls. Whenever a customer calls our toll-free number, a dial-pad appears on our......

Hefty Hardware

...Executive Summary Hefty Hardware has identified communication issues between their IT department and their business department. An analysis was performed and uncovered that Hefty Hardware had two core issues, the first issue identified was a disconnect between the IT Department and the Business department. Two solutions that were suggested to help bridge the gap between the two units were team building training and additional personnel. The recommended solution is to provide team building training to each department individually which will allow them to work as a team to and build their core business structure to improve how they do their jobs, which will eliminate the need for additional personnel. The second core problem that was identified was actually found to be two-fold, there were issues with communication between the IT department and the Business department and the business department complained of the IT department taking too long to complete a project which uncovered a time management issue within the IT department. After the analysis was completed it was recommended that the IT department and the Business department undergo training for effective communication. The effective communication training will teach the units to listen effectively and provide value and useful feedback to not only their teams but to the other teams as well, this will help clarify what is being and what needs to be so that everyone involved is completely aware of what is going on or going...

...Hardware and Software Your Name Date Class Name Teacher’s name The system that best resembles the hardware and software used at the nursing home located in PA that I used to work for is the Power Macintosh 9500. According to Wikipedia.org, the system was sold between 1995 through 1997 and has the following hardware installed, “It was powered by a PowerPC 604processor, a second-generation PowerPC chip which was faster than the earlier PowerPC 601 chip. The 180MP and 200 used the enhanced PowerPC 604e processor. The CPU was connected via a daughterboard, and so could be swapped easily. Available were single-processor cards ranging from 120 to 200 MHz, and a dual processor card with two 180 MHz CPUs. It was the first Macintosh to use the PCI standard, with six PCI slots available, with one always needed for the graphics card.” The exact breakdown of system hardware can be seen at the Apple website at the following link, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP492. The overall operations of the system are great for its age and can even be enhanced with a new program entitled “Leopard” (also available from Apple) that could help the overall performance of the system and was actually the oldest model that is compatible with that program. As for the software, we all know that there are significant differences between workgroup, personal, and enterprise uses such differences can be seen with the different programs each use has to offer, some examples of the differences are......

Hardware

...Hardware and Software December 9, 2011 CIS/207 The difference between Hardware and Software The point of this essay is to describe the hardware and software used to support personal, workgroup, and enterprise computing within my current organization, but I will first have to describe the difference between hardware and software for those who aren’t computer savvy for a better understanding of what is being used and discussed. Hardware What is hardware? Computer hardware is any physical device, something that you are able to touch and use. It is best described as a device that is physically touched. A CD-ROM, Monitor, Printer, hard drive, display, keyboard, memory, motherboard, processor, and a power supply are all what we call hardware. Software What is software? Software is a collection of instructions that enables a user to interact with the computer or have the computer perform specific tasks for them. Without any software the computer would be useless. Without the software you wouldn’t be able to interact with the computer. I personally think this is the most important part of the computer, something like the engine for the computer without a operating system. Personal Support In my organization the use of hardware to support personal is for extra data storage, the organization needs external storage to keep record of personals pay, leave, time, and progress reports. The use of the hardware keeps the organization providing feedback to......
