Entry 1:
“Madonna and Child”
Studio of Raphel Sanzio
Italian (1483-1520)
This piece caught my eye when I was visiting the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at Saint Gregory’s College on April 2. It was a piece done by Rhapel Sanzio, who was a child prodigy, and was a contemporary and equal of Leonardo and Michelangelo. Raphel was commissioned by the Pope Julius II to decorate the papal apartments in the Vatican. This piece is a copy of the “Connestable Madonna”, which was also painted by Raphel, and is in the Hermitage Collection in St. Petersburg. This copy is done with tempera and oil on wood panel, and depicts Madonna holding the holy child reading what is believed to be the Word. They are outside, and the background shows a tree, lake, and other natural landscapes.

Entry 2:
“Oklahoma Landscape”
Connie Seabourn Ragan
1951-
This is also a piece I saw when visiting the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at Saint Gregory’s, painted by Connie Ragan, a local Cherokee artist. This piece stood out to me because of use of watercolor and the very entergetic, almost frenzied landscape the Ragan depicts. It very much breaks the traditional genre of early American landscape paintings. The very intense colors of the painting is balanced out between warm and cool parts of the painting. Overall it is very balanced with the elongated and shortened froms, and smooth and rough textures, and it is all punctuated by the small central black birds. Being from Oklahoma my whole life, it was very easy from me to relate to this piece and see what the artist was trying to depict.

Entry 3:
“Esther Before Assuerus”
Francesco Barbieri (Il Guercino)
1630
This is one of the bigger paintings that I saw while visiting the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at Saint Gregory’s. This painting was inspired by the story of Esther from the Bible. During the biblical times entering the king’s chamber without summons was punishable by death. Although, because the king loved Esther, he held out his staff showing that he would hear what she had to say. Guercino shows this most intense and dramatic scene of the story by showing the exact moment the King holds out his staff, as Esther faints with relief. The background of the painting is not completely discarded, but all of the attention is directed to the figures and their gestures. The piece is done with oil on canvas and the artist uses many different textures in the clothing of the figures, with delicate and precise brush strokes adding even more emphasis to the event.

Entry 4:
“Suit of Armor with Shield and Halberd”
Vincenzo Zenon
1446
It was very cool to come across this suit of armor by Vincenzo Zenon while at Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at Saint Gregory’s. The armor has three distinctive inscriptions on it that gives most of the information about the armor. It tells us who it was made by, when it was made, and where it was made at. Most likely, it was made by many different craftsmen that were all under the master craftsmen, Zenon. One of the most prominent inscriptions is on the top part of the shield there is a winged lion that is resting its paw on a book. The lion and the book served as major symbol for Venice and for St. Mark the Evangelist. This armor was completely made out of metal and stands about six feet tall.

Entry 5:
“Madonna and Child”
Spinello Aretino
(1333-1410)
I found this piece interesting at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art at Saint Gregory’s because it was also a piece titled “Madonna and Child”. I liked seeing the different interpretation that Aretino had of Madonna with her child, and the somewhat different style that he used. It was painted with tempera and gold on panel, and show Madonna seated on a cushion, clothed in white and wrapped with a blue mantle. She is holding her child on her left knee, who is clothed in grey and red and holds a goldfinch in his hand. The goldfinch is an important part of the piece because it is fond of eating thistles and thorns and because of the crown of thorns Christ wore, the goldfinch is a symbol of the Passion of the Christ. This piece was most likely part of a portable altarpiece used by a traveling priest.…...

...English 101 Lincoln’s Challenge Everyone has certain moments in their lives that have a lasting impression. Some people get a new job, meet fascinating new people, or get married. The experience that made an impression, even changed my life was going to Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. This academy was one of many big changes in my life. The benefits of this academy will help me through the difficult trials of life that I will face in the years to come. Lincoln’s Challenge was a place for “troubled” teens to obtain a GED and get discipline. It was a military-based school in Rantoul, Illinois. Young adults from the ages of sixteen to eighteen would come there, voluntarily, to change their mischievous behavior. Last year I dropped out of MacArthur High School and enrolled in the academy. I was a junior when I left the high school, and I was truly scared out of my wits. What I had heard about Lincoln’s Challenge Academy, or LCA, were not too pleasant. I knew my past wasn’t the best, but from what I had heard from a few friends the other teens that were going to attend were going to be much worse. When I arrived at LCA in January, I was absolutely terrified. I didn’t want to leave the comfort of my home, parents, friends, or especially my bed! What made matters worse was that I would have to gone for six months without my phone! However, the promise of two three-day breaks in March and April and family visits every Sunday made the knot in my stomach shrink a little bit. When......

For some patients, the preoperative period may last for months, during which testing and other procedures may be done. For an emergency, such as an appendectomy, the preoperative period may last only a few hours. During the preoperative phase, preadmission testing is done to assess health history, family medical history, and any known allergies to medications. During which time explanation of the surgical procedure and patient education is taking place. Patient education advises the patient on pre-surgical preparation such as bowel preparation, nutritional and fluid intake the day before the procedure and when to stop eating, and how to proceed with medication therapy the day before surgery. Diagnostic testing includes ECG monitoring, blood testing and vital signs. The trauma of surgery can greatly be relieved by psychological preparation of the patient before surgery, so during preadmission testing psychological evaluation is also taking place to assess the patient for any fears or anxiety related to the surgical procedure. ...The Experience Your arrival to the residence starts with you examining a house that is physically well-kept. A beige house with tan shutters, and landscaping throughout the yard that is reminiscent of a magazine cover. The sound of a bird’s chirping, and bumblebees buzzing in the summertime, makes you feel warm. You walk up to our home feeling a sense of welcoming. When you finally walk into our house, the experience begins. The captivating smell transports you into another dimension. My mother loves to cook, and the aroma of spices and vegetables simmering in a pot leaves a strong impression throughout the home. The sound of a cook hard at work distracts you with clanging, chopping, and shaking of her tools. The warmth of the air with these sweet aromatic smells makes you feel invited and happy to be there. Upon entering you will also meet our dogs. They are very pleased to greet you, but all guests must first be approved by man’s best friend. Their submissiveness is very playful, and it is always customary to give a scratch or pat on their head. Both dogs wag their tails in excitement and with their tongue hanging out of their mouth they pant from the affection. The house is bright and airy with photographs of memories hanging about the walls. Strategically placed, every picture has a purpose in its occupied space. Mirrors enlarge the room, thereby giving the illusion the room is quite spacious. The softness of the chairs makes you feel right at home when you......

...Valuing Life 10/3/2012 By: Lisa Graham-Jones Instructor: Professor Wright Or Life is precious and shaped by many different experiences along the way. What if you were unable to experience this thing we call life? If the hands could turn back time and your mother decided not to let you live, but instead destroy your life before being able to experience the world we know of today? Many bypass this thought process when considering abortion. Women instead think of themselves and their situation when debating the option of abortion. Life is valuable period. Regardless of whether there are good outcomes of abortion, or negative outcomes of abortion, I am against abortion. Regardless of what is going on in life, women know that the only way to not get pregnant is through the choice of abstinence, but they still choose to have sex. With this being a problem it makes abortion look really evil due to careless and selfish choices that women are making today. Abortion has been overthrown and battled in many courts with different cases and the procedure of abortion has granted because the right of the constitution protects the choices that women make with the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. The constitution protects the rights of women in many different ways including the choice of what women want to do with their bodies. These three amendments make abortion legal and create a bigger problem of diminishing this evil operation for the fact that abortion has been approved by......

...Experience Paper A visit to the Cloisters Museum The Creative Voice Experience. Practical contact. Observation of facts. We live in a “soft” world where the greater percentage of the arts are viewed through some type of electronic device with a screen and usually muddled with banners of advertisements or endorsements. We view static images on screens where texture and brush strokes could never be appreciated. We watch videos of classic Shakespearian plays devoid of the elements and senses of a live performance. True experience cannot be had remotely. Experience MUST be experienced! I decided to visit the Cloisters Museum and Gardens to reach outside my comfort zone and visit a place that I not only have never been to, but had also never heard of. The Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that focuses on the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The museum is located in northern Manhattan and overlooks the Hudson River. That particular day was fairly warm with light rain. Upon entry into the museum my initial reaction was how cold and damp it was in comparison to the day. Because I had not been there before, I was initially most impressed with the structure more than the art itself. It is clear that people have gone to great lengths to recreate a structure that incorporates all of the elements of medieval times. I am by no means a historian and as a result I am usually stricken by something that appeals to me visually over its historical......

Pregnancy: a Long. Eventful Life Experience

...Pregnancy: A Long, Eventful Life Experience Pregnancy occurs everyday world wide. Many women dream of the day they can start their own family. Although some women enjoy pregnancy, it can seem like the nine months take forever to come to an end for some people. The nine months of pregnancy are equally divided into three trimesters. Pregnancy, an event of developing a baby, is separated by months and trimesters and is a long, eventful life experience. Months one, two, and three are the first trimester and include weeks one through twelve of a pregnancy. During week one of pregnancy, the egg and sperm join to make a cell called a zygote. The zygote divides multiple times and the bunch of cells move towards the uterus. Then during the second week the dividing zygote, now called a blastocyst, goes into the uterus and burrows into the side of it. During week three, part of the blastocyst will develop into the placenta that will help provide the baby with nutrients. It will also produce a hormone called HCG that will stop the woman’s menstrual period and make the body produce increased levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones that will begin growth of the placenta. The fully formed placenta will be the life support system for the baby (Dattel 13). In week four, the heart and lungs of the baby will begin developing, and the baby will have a heartbeat (14). By week five the baby is approximately 0.5 inches long, and the arms and legs will appear as short stumps. At the time of...

Explain How a Firm Can Experience Diminishing Returns in the Short-Run and Economies of Scale in the Long Run. (15 Marks)

...Explain how a firm can experience diminishing returns in the short-run and economies of scale in the long run. (15 marks) Economies of scale is a long-run concept experienced by firms whereby lower average costs is achieved as a result of an increase in the scale of production. It can occur both internally and externally. Examples of internal economies of scale include: technical, marketing, managerial, financial, network and specialisation of the workforce. The law of diminishing return states that as additional units of a variable factor (such as labour) are added to a fixed factor(such as premises), the extra unit of output from the variable factor will eventually diminish (this is a short-run concept). <Insert cost curve envelope> The above diagram illustrates a cost curve envelope. As a new firm starts to produce a good or service in an industry, they under produce at point Qa. The firm then starts to utilise their resources and eventually reach optimum efficiency as shown in the diagram above at point Qb. If a firm starts to overproduce and over utilise their resources due to massive order by a large firm required within a short time period, they will produce at point Qc at cost AC. At this point, each extra marginal unit of labour added to the fixed cost will produce fewer marginal units of labour and therefore the firm experiences the law of diminishing returns as total output is still increasing but at a diminishing rate. In the long run a firm......

...show and wanted to sing the song “Awesome God.” The school violated her rights due to her performance not bearing the imprimatur of the school and her viewpoint being discriminated (O.T. v. Frenchtown Elementary School District Board of Education). Application of First Amendment to the Scenario The First Amendment is designed to protect all citizens by giving them the right to express themselves in different ways. In doing so, we still have to be careful on how we do it. Students have the right to express themselves as long as it does not cause any disruption. In my school district, we abides by the First Amendment by not forbidding all mention of religion in the school system (Pamlico County Board of Education, 2015). The only part that is prohibited is the advancement or inhibition of religion (Pamlico County Board of Education, 2015). My school district feels that there’s nothing unconstitutional about using religious subjects or materials as long as it is in compliance to the neutrality of the education program (Pamlico County Board of Education, 2015). Conclusion When working with students assignments that deals with religion, we as educators have to take various things into considerations. We have to allow students the opportunity to express themselves even when dealing with religious expressions. We have to make sure that we grade the student’s work based on academic standards and not our own beliefs and when we are displaying any work with religious......

...will understand the central role that ethics plays in shaping the practice of business and the life of a people, society, and nation. The Nature of Ethics Suppose you see a person being mugged in the street. How will you behave? Will you act in some way to help even though you risk being hurt? Will you walk away? Perhaps you might adopt a “middle-of-the-road approach” and not intervene but call the police instead? Does the way you act depend on whether the person being mugged is a fit male, an elderly person, or even a street person? Does it depend on whether there are other people around, so you can tell yourself, “Oh well, someone else will help or call the police. I don’t need to”? ethical dilemma The quandary people experience when they must decide whether or not they should act in a way that benefits someone else even if it harms others and isn’t in their own selfinterest. Ethical Dilemmas The situation described above is an example of an ethical dilemma, the quandary people find themselves in when they have to decide if they should act in a way that might help another person or group, and is the “right” thing to do, even though doing so might not be in their own self-interest. A dilemma may also arise when a person has to decide between two different courses of action, knowing that whichever course he or she chooses will result in harm to one person or group even though it may benefit another. The ethical dilemma here is to decide which......

Life-Long Learning: the Really Valuable Experiences in My Life

...Running head: The Really Valuable Experiences in My Life Life-long Learning: The Really Valuable Experiences in My Life r IRN: University of Phoenix COMM 299 Tamashea Hawkins June 2, 2005 Abstract The most important life-long learning experience that I have had to deal with is financial responsibility. Understanding the value of money is something that is not learned overnight. Learning to budget properly, save for my future, and live within my means was a very difficult and long learning process. Although I have never been late on any bills, faulted on any loans, or been penalized by any financial institutions for insufficient funds for payment transactions, there were times that at the end of a pay period I found myself rolling change for groceries. I soon began to realize that if I wanted to get ahead I needed to educate myself on realistic financial goals. Whether it is savings for short or long term financial goals, investments into retirement’s accounts to augment my military pension, or buying a home to live the American dream of living without having to pay rent. These are just a few of the things that I needed to understand and set my goals to accomplish. Life-long Learning: The Really Valuable Experience in My Life Money seems to be one of the biggest necessities of life, it seems that the more money you earn, the more you spend. I woke up one day and realized that if I continued to live the lifestyle that I was......
