Stylistic analysis of the article
“Don’t call me and I won’t call you”, Jim Shelley with the chilling story of one man for whom the party line’s over, published in Weekend Guardian. The extract reveals us a life-story of James Shelley, the story of his unusual addiction, the obsession to phone and to be phoned that led to his dismissal from the office, abandonment of friends and above all led to the personal psychological crisis.
The correspondent’s aim is to confess frankly in ironical way to his telephone addiction ( he’s used to call it telephone frenzy); in certain sense to ridicule his own obsession and some other addictions that occur in our life.
To demonstrate that his confession is honest and make it convincing the correspondent uses many special techniques. For instance, the narration goes from the first person, personal pronoun “I” is like the actual evidence of all events and creates the potential context of sympathy. Framing repetition “My name is Jim Shelley, and I’m an addict” used in the beginning of the article and in the end greatly shows the degree of sincerity and persuasiveness of the author. As regards the ironical attitude, the usage of “With these words I began to break the spells” as if he was possessed by evil spells, “I’d disappear for a quick fix a swift hint” terminology of drug-addicts compared to symptoms of his telephone frenzy adds as well the portion of irony. Cradling the phone- as if he treated the phone or a receiver as a little baby, undoubtedly, it sounds extraordinary.
To make the narration vivid and expressive the correspondent implies a gradation device and describes consecutively his story from the very beginning and till the apogee of his addiction ( I was dismissed, slumped in a corner, sobbing, clutching Yellow Pages).
Another proficient technique is historical past, mixture of tenses, present-past) shows that James at the moments is fighting his addiction; it brings some freshness and actuality of the narration.
The story is written in journalistic style and that’s why it aimed at the considerable scope of readers.
The subheading of the article “Jim Shelley with the chilling story of one man for whom the party line’s over” in its way is the representation of defeated expectancy, it can be anticipated a shocking and dreadful story but instead we observe an addiction that fully wrapped in ironical context.
Having read this work, some thoughts involuntarily crossed my mind first, any addiction is nullity; and a question that’s still stirring my mind Dare we to be addicted, to be dependent?…...

No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...

Axe Call Me Campaign

...is targeting a more specific group. Specifically, Axe’s target audience is straight white men in those ages 18-24. We can see this because people of color are not shown in the ads, and the men only want women in this set of advertisements. This ad uses several persuading techniques to better engage their target audience. Among these are: * Humor, because the situation is clearly outlandish, making it funny to the target audience. * Fear because the ad talks about how a supposedly real man is secure enough in his masculinity to keep his cool, putting fear in the viewer’s mind that if they can’t keep their cool, they’re not manly enough. * Beautiful people, because the women in the ad are basically models, implying that if you use Axe you will land gorgeous women. * Association, because this ad plants the association in people’s mind between Axe and manliness or Axe and getting lucky with the ladies. In the resolution of this Axe story, the real man and is rewarded for keeping his cool. By how Axe believes that any straight white man age 18-24 would want to be rewarded. This lucky man gets to go home with not one, but two girls. Of course, he should be grateful for this great opportunity, seeing as they are obviously only engaging in this sexual adventure for his pleasure. There’s no danger in this adventure either, seeing as there is no possible way that two women could be attracted to each other or have the intention of being in a real relationship.......

The Spirit Catches You and You Call Down

...1 1. What do you think of traditional Hmong birth practices (pp. 3-5)? Compare them to the techniques used when Lia was born (p. 7). How do Hmong and American birth practices differ? I find the traditional birth practices peculiar and very unsafe. The conceiving of a child should be done in a sterile environment by professionals, so that the risks of negative effects like infections, wounds, etc. is minimized. Nevertheless I think the tradition, that the placenta is buried by the father, so that the soul can return to it’s first jacket, in order to continue it’s after death journey, is a wonderful way of believing what comes after death. Professional doctors handled Lia’s birth the American way, with her mother lying on a metal table with sterile drapes and no anaesthetics. This is a big difference to the Hmon customs, where Foua would have squatted on the dirty floor and pulled the baby out by herself, while trying not to touch the floor and not waking her other kids, until the new-born starts to cry. Another difference is that the Hmong bury the baby’s placenta and the Americans incinerate it. After birth a soul calling ceremony officially in order to confirm the quality of Lia’s name and pleasing the soul to reside in Lia’s body to protect her from illness and evil spirits. 2. Over many centuries the Hmong fought against a number of different peoples who claimed sovereignty over their lands; they were also forced to emigrate from China. How do you think these......

"Call Me" by Blondie Song Analysis

...when it comes to a successful song. The song “Call Me” by Blondie uses a lot of repetition throughout the song. For example, the first and second verses have the exact same instrument chords, as well as the female vocals. The first verse begins at 0:16 with female vocals and a constant drum, bass, and distorted electric guitar. The second verse, which begins at 0:56, uses the exact same techniques. Also, The first and second choruses are an example of repetition. During these choruses, a male harmony is added, as well as a cymbal to emphasize certain words. There is a slight variation when it comes to the last verse of the song. The lyrics in the third verse are in a different language, and adding the organ in the background adds to the variation. Additionally, there is a variation between the first and second choruses compared to the third chorus. In the third chorus, an organ is added that emphasizes the idea behind the song. Also, the organ seems to add a feeling of importance because of the quickness of the beats. An example of contrast is only used once in the song, at the last interlude, at 2:09. During this interlude, unlike the other ones, an organ is added and plays a completely different beat. Instead of the organ playing the same static beat, it is quicker and changing to different keys more frequently. Repetition adds to the narrative of this song because it emphasizes the main idea of the singer. “Call me” is repeated during the entire song because that...

...the greats. Being raised without his biological father, cause of drug addiction and possession. The reason for selecting this individual is because I love the game of basketball. Shaq has been one of my favorite NBA players of all time. I’ve watched Shaq struggle on the court, but never off the court. I’m inspired to write a paper about one of the most dominating centers. One obstacle that Shaq had to face was money. Shaq was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 1992. He spent his first million that he earned within 30 minutes. Like most people, when you get a large sum of money you just want to go out and spend it, just like Shaq did. Not thinking about how to save or your future or if you can impact someone else’s life who may not have food to eat, or nowhere to sleep. Another obstacle Shaq had to face was his Los Angeles teammate Kobe Bryant. “It’s not about how much money you make; the question is are educated enough to keep it? 1. Suppose You Are Working as an Operator in a Call Centre in India and Receiving Calls from Americans and Londoners. How Would You Handle Such Calls?

.... I would answer the Americans and Londoners I can usually determine whether or not the caller is angry within the first few seconds of a call. When I come across an angry caller, it is important to simply listen to them before trying to defuse the situation. The caller may just want to vent his frustration. Sometimes, after a caller is given the chance to express displeasure, they will apologize and allow us to solve the problem with no further anger. While the caller is speaking, it may be helpful to jot down the major points of their problem on your notepad. Angry callers tend to go on tangents. Keeping notes will help you to find an answer to the problem more efficiently and will also allow you to maintain your focus. If the caller is threatening you, using violent language or swearing, follow your company’s policy guidelines for handling difficulty customers. If your guidelines allow you to end the call when they cross the line, by all means, end the call right away. It is important to stay calm during a call to prevent the situation from escalating. I Dont Know What to Call This

...1. What are the common sub-mindsets (e.g., creativity, initiative, vision) that you think Steve Jobs had based on the entrepreneurial mindset framework we discussed in class? There were a lot of sub-mindsets that helped Steve Jobs become a very successful entrepreneur of our generation and I think we can learn a lot from him. One of the most important sub-mindset of his is his imagination/creativity. His Apple products have revolutionized the way in which technology is heading since their initial release of the first apple computer in 1976. His astounding capability to develop and design such technological products amazes me till this day, since my first iPhone (the 3gs) I had never switched from Apple to any other phone manufacturing company – same as my MacBook. He also had a strong vision, passionate and fearless when it came to expanding Apple. A lot of his decisions were questionable and at time risked his company but only because he really believed in it. He was able to push his business and peers to the limits without going overboard with it. 2. What did you like and learn from this video? I believe that there were a couple of lessons we could learn from Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford. The first thing I learnt from his speech is that he followed and believed in his heart, after attending college for a few months he decided to drop out of all of the courses that was required for his degree and enrolled in the ones that truly interests him – one...
