A counseling supervisor is a senior member of the counseling profession with more experience and holds a practicing license from the counselors licensing board. A counseling supervisor plays a vital role in the professional development of the supervisee in that he/she is mandated with supervising, mentoring, guiding and evaluating a student counselor (King & Wheeler, 2001). The supervisor ensures that the supervisee works effectively in the accepted professional manner and maintains the set code of ethics. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to ensure the relationship between the supervisee and the client is purely professional and the client is satisfied with the quality services offered. The supervisor also should ensure the supervisee are well trained and have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to practice before recommending them for licensing. Supervisors generally are mandate with the role of safeguarding the welfare of patients, the supervisee, the general public and also protecting the entire counseling profession (http://www.apa.org, 2015). Travon and Elliot work together with the former as the supervisor and the latter the supervisee. The two are faced with ethical dilemmas as they have extended their work relationship to social and personal relationship against section F: Supervision, Training and Teaching. Section F.10.d Non academic relationships requires the supervisor and the supervisee to refrain from engaging in non-work related relationships that could hinder the performance of both in their respective roles. The supervisor is also required to evaluate and award marks the supervisee fairly deserves. Section F.9.a Evaluation of students thus forbids the two from having a social relationship that could influence how Travon evaluates and awards marks to Elliot ('ACA Code of Ethics', 2014). Travon and Elliot social relationship could affect their working relationship as it would influence all the professional decisions they make. They both meet up for drinks after work and don’t invite their co-workers, this could influence the way Travon evaluates the performance of Elliot as he would not want to upset him. This relationship also could positively impact on their work environment as friends it would be easy for both to consult and Elliot could even learn out of office hours. Social relationships should be maintained only if the professional and ethical line is not crossed by either the supervisor or supervisee or both. The integrity of the supervisor should not be affected by the social involvement with the supervisee and the supervisee should be treated same as any other student during working hours.…...
