Bus 499 Assignment 3: Business-Level and Corporate-Level Strategies

...Professor Rufus Robinson Assignment 3: Business-Level and Corporate-Level Strategies Business 499 February 17, 2014 The business that I chose to research is General Electric. GE is one of the oldest and largest businesses in the United States. They are ranked #26 largest firm in the U.S and the 14th most profitable. GE is a massive, diversified and profitable conglomerate with a lot of very good but unrelated businesses. GE has expanded to incorporate television, airplane engines, medical devices, household appliances and commercial financing. Analyzing GE’s business-level strategy is somewhat difficult being that GE has so many different divisions. Any of these products would serve as a large and viable business on its own but GE has them all under one corporate umbrella. GE’s business level strategy states “GE is building the world by providing capital, expertise and infrastructure for a global economy. GE Capital has provided billions in financing so businesses can build and grow their operations and consumers can build their financial futures. We build appliances, lighting, power systems and other products that help millions of homes, offices, factories and retail facilities around the world work better.” Figure 1 GE’s Organizational Structure and Business Portfolio. 2001 Figure 2 GE’s Organizational Structure and Business Portfolio. 2007 What is most important to the long-term success of GE is long term growth and investing in innovative......

If management would need to finance investment with external capital, the cost of the capital would much higher than using internal capital. Issues would cause direct costs for (järjestämisestä) and take time and effort from the management. Indirect costs could also (accure) when management would need to underprice the issue to make sure it would succeed. Firms rely on their internal capital because it is easier and cheaper way to finance investments. It does not mean that external markets are more unefficent than internal and the (väite) is false. b) “When underwriting equity or bond issues, investment banks are merely acting as financial intermediaries without taking any risk of their own. Therefore, they are charging unrealistically high fees for their services.” Underwriters act in three different roles. Firstly, they provide financial advisory and make careful analysis what the issue is likely to be worth. Underwriters also have dialogies with the potential investors to find out how high the demand is with different prices. Secondly, underwriters......

...usive use at Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME), 2015 2095 MAY 1, 2008 W. EARL SASSER HEATHER BECKHAM Thomas Green: Power, Office Politics, and a Career in Crisis Another long day at the office had drawn to a close. Thomas Green felt the pulsing in his temples that usually preceded a migraine. As he stepped outside Dynamic Displays’ corporate headquarters in Boston, the brisk air made him catch his breath. It was now February 5, 2008. Green could not believe that in five short months his dream promotion had turned into a disaster. When Green had been promoted to his new position in September, he was a rising star. Now, he would be lucky to celebrate his one-year anniversary with the company. His boss, Frank Davis, had sent the division vice president, Shannon McDonald, two scathing emails criticizing Green’s performance. Green and Davis had yet to see eye to eye on work styles or market trends. Tension had also risen when Green did not enthusiastically endorse the sales forecasts made by Davis. Green felt the forecasts were either overly optimistic or outright fabrications. Before he left for the day, Green had reread the series of emails regarding his performance and was certain that Davis was setting him up to be dismissed. Davis’s most recent email had made it clear to Green that his position as a senior market specialist was in jeopardy. He did not have much time to rectify the situation. McDonald had emailed a formal request to him that afternoon,...

...ASSIGNMENT 1: DUE SEPTEMBER 23, 2014 Problem 1 (a) “The fact that firms so heavily rely on their internal capital market as a source of financing is strong evidence that internal markets are more efficient than external markets.” ANSWER Although internal capital is preferable to external capital based on the reasons below: * According to the pecking order theory (Myers, 1984; Myers & Majluf, 1984), firms follow a hierarchical financing pattern. Thus, firms would prefer internal funds (retained earnings) to external funds because: * External capital would result in higher cost of capital, due to direct costs such as underwriters’ fees and indirect costs such as under-pricing. * Using internal capital is much easier for managers because the cost of capital is lower and investment decisions do not need to be scrutinised by investors. * Reliance on internal capital/funds is the cheaper source of financing. However, it does not indicate that external markets are less efficient than internal markets in any way. (b) “The stock price of a company paying out a regular dividend can be expected to fall on the payment date, not on the record date or the ex-dividend date.” This statement is false. Investors begin to trade their shares on the ex-dividend date after a company has declared its dividend policy, and this is when the stock price of a company can be expected to change or fall. Thus, stock prices fall on the ex-dividend dates to......

Altering business strategies and staying competitive have not been easy against other car companies, however they have overcome and are focusing on the One Ford Plan (One Team, One Plan, and One Goal) and their vision for future success. 1. Business Level Strategy The business level strategy deployed by Ford Motors is the cost leadership strategy, which puts emphasis on operating at lower costs, but not essentially offering the lowest prices in the market (Haines 2004). Therefore, a firm can use such a position to reduce its prices in order to increase its market share or maintain the current prices and increase its revenue per unit items compared to its competitors.
