Week 1: Elements of Communication

COMMUNICATION- The process of human beings responding to the symbolic behavior of other persons.

-First Characteristic of Definition: Communication is a “Process.”

Communication is “Process” several reasons:

1.We do not communicate to other people, we communicate with other people.

To understand difference, we first need to talk about the components of communication:
-Sender, Receiver…
-Message Encoding, Message Decoding…

-Psychological Noise, Physiological Noise

-Communication Channels,
-AND Communication Environment.

Sender-The person or persons responsible for creating a message to be sent.

Ex. A politician giving a speech…

A parent lecturing a child…

A divorced middle age women writing a love letter to her favorite soap opera star…

…All these people are sending messages.

Receiver- The person or persons who are receiving the created messages.

Ex. An audience receives the politician’s speech…

The unfortunate child is the recipient of the parents lecture…

The soap opera star is the lucky receiver of our divorcee’s romantic letter.

Communication Channel- The medium a receiver uses to send his or her message.

**Channels may be verbal or nonverbal**

Ex. Speech is a channel…

Writing is a channel…

Non-verbal gestures are channels…

Voice Tones are channels…And so on.

Encoding- When a sender attempts to replicate his or her internal…...

Missing Class penalized for not showing up to class? This common question is heard every semester in almost every course. Students are always questioning why a professor should have the power to penalize them for not attending class, but there are reasons. The first one is that if you sign up for that particular class they expect you to attend and do the work, be punctual and have responsibility. Another fundamental thought of reasoning is the fact that there are over a dozen other people that may want to take that class and will show up and arrive to class each week on time. Finally after each class we are supposed to be walking away with some form of new found knowledge that the professor was trying to convey. Some students think differently about that, why should the professors worry about attendance, if they are the ones paying for the class shouldn’t that be their decision whether to attend class or not? For an example what if a particular student misses classes frequently but hand in all the assignments and get good grades on it, should the professor penalize that student even though they know the material and is doing good in class? Shouldn’t be the student’s decision on attending class since they are paying for that class? Would it make a difference for the professor if the student was there or not? Therefore it is not only beneficial to a student’s grade point average, but also as a life skill to practice being punctual for class. It is also a sign of respect......

...When you hear the word “Class” what do you think of? When I hear that word depending on how it is being used I think of it mainly in two different aspects. The first way I think of it is in the sense of a class room setting. For example “I have to go to class”. ...Java Class MIS 304 is not a class for everyone. Not just any student should take the class. This class is structured to assist students in learning how to program using the Java language. This class does not make a student an expert in the language of Java, but instead gives the student the basic fundamentals needed to have practical use of the language and gives them a solid foundation upon which they can build if they choose to do so. The material covered in the class is adequate. Java can be a complex language to learn, but in MIS 304 one is taught the basics and nothing too detailed or complicated. The resources that are given to the students are very good. I know that the Java book used for the class is one of the best reference materials on Java that is on the market today. The lab facilities and proctors are also great resources. The only problem I feel that exists is that students don’t take advantage of the resources they have available. Students hardly look through their book for answering questions they might have. Also students hardly even bring their books to the lab when doing programs. They sometimes look for proctors to fix their problems instead of fixing it themselves. I think it should be emphasized to students that the proctors are not their to do the programs for them, but to rather help them figure out what is going wrong in their programs.
