Cake Dish Disaster

...that I was there. She responded “Hey baby I’m not feeling so well, go ahead and fix yourself something to eat.” I thought to myself great! I don’t have to eat any grits today. As I approached the kitchen I scanned the counter-tops and cabinets for cereal, only to be disappointed. She only kept healthy cereals such as Grape Nuts. Ewwwwww! There had to be something edible I thought. As I closed the cabinet I was greeted by a sighting of a cake dish on one of the counter-tops. One thing my grandmother was good at was baking cakes. I crept over to the cake dish salivating more and more with every light step I took. I had to be incredibly quiet, if my grandmother knew that I was having cake for breakfast she would have my hide. Finally I reached the dish and lifted the top slightly to verify the contents. I was embraced by the aroma of a German Chocolate Cake my second favorite next to Red Velvet. I quietly opened the cabinet with the plates and removed the biggest one I could find. I then retrieved a tall glass and filled it with ice cold milk. I placed my milk on the table and proceeded slowly back to the cake dish with my plate. I sat my plate on the counter and continued on my mission. As I carefully opened the cake-dish it slipped out of my hand. Oh no!!!!! I panicked and frantically I tried to catch it before it shattered to the ground. Somehow during my attempts to catch the dish it broke in half in the air, and crashed to the ground making what seemed......

How to Bake a Cake

...2012 How to bake a cake Baking a cake may seem intimidating to most people but it really is not. All you need is a little creativity, patience and skill to master the task. It will prove not only to be fun but very therapeutic. Having the right kitchen tools can make the experience more enjoyable. The proper mixer is a worthwhile investment as it will make the baking experience much easier. The advantages to owning this type of kitchen equipment are worth the higher price. Mixing batters by hand or by using a hand held mixer may not always get the batter to the desired consistency. Good quality cake pans are equally important as they help to ensure that the heat is distributed evenly throughout the cake. A lesser quality cake pan may not achieve the desired result. Cloth foil wraps are needed to wrap around the cake pan. They typically cost twenty dollars for a pair and are an important part of the baking process. The cloth foil wraps will keep the cake from rising unevenly while baking in the pan. As for the hand utensils, common measuring cups, measuring spoons, rubber spatulas and mixing bowls found in any household kitchen are acceptable. A roll of parchment paper will be needed to line the cake pans. Cooling racks are also needed to place the hot cake pans on a counter top to cool after baking. The most common ingredients needed to bake a cake are typical items found in almost any household. They consist of cake flour,......

The Cereal Killer

...The Cereal Killer Is Peter Pan a war criminal? It is a proven fact that Peter Pan is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians. No, not THAT Peter Pan. Peter Pan, Smuckers, Skippy, Jif and all brands of peanut butter are potential killers for people who are severely allergic to peanuts and peanut products. Did you know that one of the ingredients in some flavors of Jelly Belly jelly beans is peanut flour? Did you know that food, processed in equipment that has previously processed food containing peanuts, may be as lethal to the severely allergic as food containing peanuts? If your answer is No, then read on. Here is a story that sounds like something from Stephen King. True food allergies are rare. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) estimates that only 2% of the adult population of the United States is allergic to foods. Further, only eight foods cause 90% of all food allergic reactions. They are milk, egg, wheat, peanut, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish (Food Allergy Network). Many reactions to foods are really intolerance (reaction of the metabolism due to a chemical deficiency) rather than allergy (reaction of the immune system). Many infant allergies, which are later outgrown, are thought to be the result of immature immune systems. However, other allergies become stronger as the person ages and inadvertently becomes more exposed. One report on KCBS radio indicated there may be a link between mothers who ate peanuts during......

Cereal Wars

...Case Analysis Cereal Wa Consumer Behavior (BME-213914-13sp1) April 30, 2013 Dr. Lydia MacKenzie Abstract The cereal market which was highly competitive was decreasing in the 1990s. The sales were dropping increasingly. The sales were flat and not getting any better. According to Fraser, Jill Andresky “with sales basically flat, gross profit margins slipped from 53.2% in 1996 to 52.1% in 1997 and 51.5% in 1998. Earnings per share (EPS) dropped from $1.53 to $1.35 during the same period.” This struggles changes when in 1999 Carlos Gutierrez was appoint as the CEO of Kellogg, a longtime company insider, bringing the company to be the top cereal seller for the first time ever. He accomplished this by aggressively making the largest acquisition in Kellogg’s history when he purchases other companies. According to Fraser, Jill Andresky “the 2001 purchase of Keebler Foods Co., a successful cookie and snack-food manufacturer. This purchase helped push corporate revenues from about $6 billion in 2000 to $8.3 billion in 2002. More important, it broadened the company's universe beyond the highly competitive, flat-growth world of breakfast cereals and provided new avenues through which to expand proven brands while boosting margins and earnings.” Consumer-product Relationship for Three Segments Breakfast Cereal Market Marketers need to understand how kids, teens/young adults and baby boomers see breakfast cereal accommodating into their life style, so marketers need to......

...1 1.1 CAKES AND PASTRIES Introduction Bakery products have become very popular throughout the country. Breads and biscuits are the most common products but other items like cakes, pastries, cream-rolls, cookies etc. are also not lagging far behind. These items are consumed by people of all age groups across the board. Nature of these products is such that the consumers prefer fresh items. Shelf life of cakes & pastries is limited and thus local manufacturers enjoy distinct advantage. In spite of continuous increase in the consumption of these items during last few years, the per capita consumption is still very low compared to the advanced countries. There is, thus, good scope for these items. A good pastry is light and airy, easily broken in the mouth (what is called 'short' eating), but firm enough to support the weight of the filling. The dough must be well mixed but care must be taken not to overmix the pastry. This results in long gluten strands and toughens the pastry. Thus, the manufacture of good pastry is something of a fine art. 1.2 Objective The primary objective of the model report is to facilitate the entrepreneurs in understanding the importance of setting up unit of cakes and pastries. This model report will serve as guidance to the entrepreneurs on starting up such a new project and basic technical knowledge for setting up such a facility. 1.3 Raw Material Availability The all important raw materials will be wheat flour, sugar, eggs and ghee for......

...School Kills My Cereal Ken Robinson, an educationalist, sums up the issues of the current education system in a very nice way by saying that the most useful subjects for work are at the top of the hierarchy in education. This means that probably the biggest part of education system is there to prepare you for a job. The job however, is a job that will let you earn your life in a very basic sense. It is understood as some kind of a security, a buffer that is provided by your education so that you have something you can use, even if it is not something you are passionate about. This gives me the impression that the education system prepares you for “survival” or for being a “worker” as we have discussed in the class. This is not really ideal in a world where almost our entire knowledge can be changed by a new invention or discovery at any given minute. Creativity, exploration, discovery, invention are the things that move us forward. Repeating the same thing over and over again does not get us anywhere. Most jobs are however still algorithmic and require certain skills instead of interdisciplinary education or creative ideas. How is one to pursue creativity as a cashier who is repeating the same process all the time? Since, as Robinson puts it forth, education system is based on preparing you for the current environment, the change can only radically come from the work environment. As jobs and work environment require more and more creative and diversely talented people, and...

The Ready- to- Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry in 1994 (a)

...Harvard Business School 9-795-191 Rev. February 14, 1997 The Ready-to-Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry in 1994 (A) All is not well in the land of Tony the Tiger.1 In early 1994, the ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast cereal industry had reached a critical turning point in its evolution. In an industry historically characterized by stability and above average profitability, slowing demand growth and a surge in private label sales threatened to undermine the dominant positions of the Big Three: Kellogg, General Mills, and Philip Morris. The 1993 year-end statistics showed that industry sales growth had slowed to under 2%, while private labels had topped 5% market share by sales and 9% by volume for the first time. Price increases by the Big Three had widened the gap between branded and private label products. The competitors had traditionally avoided destructive head-to-head competition, but this mutual restraint appeared to be crumbling. Each of the firms faced major decisions going forward about whether to break with the industry’s lock-step moves and how to deal with the threat of private labels. History of the RTE Breakfast Cereal Industry2 The ready-to-eat breakfast cereal industry got its start in 1894, when Dr. John Kellogg and his brother W.K. Kellogg invented wheat cereal flakes in an attempt to make whole grains appealing to the vegetarian clients of the Seventh-Day Adventist sanitarium Dr. Kellogg ran in Battle Creek, Michigan. 3 W.K. went on to invent the corn......

To Snack or Not to Snack

...To Snack or Not to Snack: That is the Problem “A problem exists when a situation has negative effects. Recognizing that there is a problem–being aware of those effects-is essential before you can begin to solve it” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, p. 94). A very profound statement that is easy to relate to for anyone dealing with a problem in his or her day-to-day life. I find it intriguing how sometimes solving one problem can lead to another. The day-to-day problem I want to solve is snacking during the day. You may be wondering how that can be construed as a problem. It has, unfortunately, turned into a problem I struggle with daily. Here is my story. The Start Prior to some minor oral surgery, the doctor told me that I needed to stop smoking two days before and seven days after surgery. Keeping my health and healing in mind, I complied with the doctors’ directions. After surgery he placed me on medication to decrease the pain so the craving to smoke never surfaced. Once I was off the pain medication, it was apparent that I would need some tips to quit smoking. The Foundation for a Smoke Free America (1982-2002) website suggests several tips to help including deep breathing exercises; increase fluid intake for the first few days; be patient, the urge to smoke will pass; avoid alcohol, sugar, and coffee as it may increase the desire to smoke; and avoid fatty foods as the body’s metabolism may slow down. As I have heard in the past, people who try to...
