From Boom to Depression

...Running head: A new deal to recovery From Boom to Depression HIS105: Contemporary U.S. History May 10, 2012 From Boom to Depression The period after the civil war was a time of physical, economic, social, political and geographical reconstruction for the United States of America. The nation had experienced mark destruction by the civil war. Slaves were now emancipated and must be considered. These events were marked turning points for the country. Of these turning points, the social security act and the 19th amendment were most influential in that they initiated an act of government that is still practiced today. 1. Identify at least (2) two major historical turning points in the period under discussion. The 19th Amendment The woman’s fight for their own equality and for others was not an easy one. It can be traced as far back to the first woman’s right convention in Seneca Falls, New York in July of 1848. It was here that the woman suffrage movement was launched and the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) was born. Some of the key sponsors for the launch were courageous women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia. Contributors to the movement were also abolitionists, whose goals at the time were to include equal rights for all, including that of the Negro male. In 1870, their fight was partially won with the passage of the 15th amendment to the Constitution, thus giving the Negro male the right to vote. The passing of the...

Boom Times

...The 1920s was a time in America of extreme changes in society as well as in lifestyles and industries. New inventions were made. It was the time when the USA experienced its Boom, but what was the Boom, and did everyone gain of it? During the Boom USA underwent huge changes. It was experiencing a decade of a great business boom in almost every industry. New Jobs were created because things like radios, TVs Hoovers, washing machines, refrigerators were produced. Since the people were employed they could spent more money, and simply buying something had a major economic impact. It was all a circle. Someone had to produce what was bought meaning people were employed, he would then earn money for his work and usually spent some of it, buying goods produced by someone else introducing that someone into the cycle. Henry Ford also noticed that the demand for his cars rise, which lead to him producing more cars. As a consequence he introduced a whole new production way, called mass production. Mass production is the creation of many products in a short period of time, it’s a technique that aims for low unit costs and high output. Other industries took up his system and shopping habits changed as chain stores like Woolworth established. So people bought cars which caused an overflow in cars in the traffic system. Highways were built amongst them the famous Route 66. The Highway is also known as “the mother road” it runs through the USA, from Los Angeles to Chicago. Being linked to...

Baby Boom

...HIST101-1303A-08 Modern American History: 1950 to the 21st Century Phase 1 Individual Project Crystal Simpson The Baby Boom Being separated from families for long periods of time while serving in a combat zone is a feeling all too familiar, the only thing on a soldiers mind when they get home is making up for lost time. Soldiers serving in different armed forced from different countries coming home from their tours of duty overseas during World War II were eager to get back to their loved ones. Thus, resulting in the increase of births between the years 1946 to 1964. Many will argue different behind the increase of the births around the United States during this era. One of them being it was brought on because of the Cold War, to fight communism. But that would be further from the truth; simply put it was the result of plans being put on hold due to the Great Depression and World War II. Many American’s after the war looked forward to starting a family because of the growth in corporate America. Unions promised increase in salaries, so with more money comes the need to buy material items, something they went without growing up. The thought of providing a better life for their children, was not just going to be a dream, it was became reality. Like stated above, materialistic living became something to do, that also meant having a beautiful home to match the nice items being bought. That meant a demand for home developers such as William Levitt who...

The 1920s Boom

...Technology helped fuel the boom of 1922 The most important advance of the second industrial revolution is Henry Ford’s development of mass production. Before Ford, cars were luxury items, and most of his early competitors continued to view them that way, manufacturing and marketing their vehicles for the wealthy. Ford's great stroke of genius was recognizing that with the right techniques, cars could be made affordable for the general public (“Ford”). theright technique for Ford was the assembly line. The concept of this was that employees would have one job, in one stationary position, and move the part through employees creating a Model-T. His method of making cars was efficient, while still cutting costs, enabling Ford to sell his cars cheaper than competitors. Once everyone realized mass production, and assembly lines worked so well for Ford, other factories began adopting Ford’s technique. Other car manufacturers could not compete with their luxury cars intended for the rich. In order to survive as a company, they had to follow suite. “Assembly Lines became the standard in nearly every American factory. (622)” Henry Ford’s rise to success brought any of his material suppliers with him. “The mass production of cars required huge quantities of steel; entire new rolling mills had to be built to supply sheet steel for car bodies. Rubber factories boomed with the need for tires, along with paint and glass factories. (624)” To supply the huge mass of car Henry......

Prisons : Bust or Boom

...Betty Waltermire Critical Issues in Criminal Justice JUS-250 April 6, 2014 Prisons: Bust or Boom A prison is multifaceted organization to assist in the inmates in a rehabilitative process to where the prisoners can be released back into society. We know this does not work because there are no programs to assist the prisoner in changing their way of life if and when they are released. Secondly to hold dangerous people away from society, and it does this very well, but there are not that many people we need to isolate from society. The truly evil such as Charles Manson, Richard Speck, Jeffery Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy are the epitome of the word evil. To allow society to express disapproval and society has spoken to these individuals and stated in no uncertain terms what their punishment was. Most prisoners worldwide have come from disadvantaged backgrounds which include; poverty, unemployment, lack of housing, broken families, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence (Judges Prefer Public Shaming to Prison, 2013). These facts are not meant to be mitigating circumstances for the crime the inmate committed. Each of these facets of life can be overcome when a person asks for help or assistance. Prisons are full of people who have lived under the same conditions. Prison overcrowding has become a serious condition in prisons. There are not enough......

Us Industrial Boom

...Between 1860 and 1900, the United States went through a massive industrial boom due to the rapid increase of laborers and demand for oil, steel, cars, and other common products. Many of the big business owners developed a monopoly in their field of business, like oil or steel using vertical and horizontal integration methods to minimize production cost with increased speed while keeping prices high. Other factors that helped the industrial boom was rapid growth of the railroad system throughout the US. One of the biggest helps to the industrial boom in the US is the adoption of the vertical and horizontal integration systems. These systems are a type of monopoly where a business would buy all of the contributing factors in the making of their products or buy all of the retail sellers. As explained in “The Genesis of the United States Steel Corporation” by E. S. Meade, vertical integration is when a business would buy every part of the process in making the product. For example, steel industries would buy up all of the mines, to the steel billets and steel rails to minimize the cost of making the product. Horizontal integration is when a business would buy out all of the retail sellers so there would be no competition so they could make lower quality products and increase the price without worry of competition. Andrew Carnegie was the owner of the Carnegie Steel Company, the biggest steel company of the time, he used vertical integration to minimize his production costs.......

Peru Boom

... Peru Boom Spurs Growth of Middle Class (Assignment 1) Michael Davis SOC 300 January 3, 2012 Professor Ruben E. Saroukhanian Peru Boom Spurs Growth of Middle Class Peru is a middle country in Latin America; it was not one of the superrich or really poor countries. Now Peru is one the fastest growing Latin countries; in the city of El Salvador which uses to be known for indigenous Peruvians is now a mega city. This city has all the bells and whistle, the main attraction is the Mega Plaza Express shopping center. The Mega Plaza Express shopping center has movies, dinner, lights, electronic stores and much more; the local’s lover the current scene and life the city has now. Over the last couple of years the price of gold and copper has raise and the demand has become very popular with Asian countries. “The Andean country’s gross domestic product rose 6.7 percent year on year in October 2012, marking 38 consecutive months of growth” (Schipani, 2013). Peru growth has notice a letdown in 2010 to 8.8 but that has not stop Peru from becoming one of the top growing Latin American countries. “Sales in 2012 topped $5.3 billion, an increase of 20 percent over the previous year. The increase was due not only to the existence of centers such as Mega Plaza Express” (Schipani, 2013). The Peruvians average $2 dollars a person in his or her pocket has reduced to 28 percent over the last ten years. The Dot Com Boom

...The Dot com boom/bust An economic bubble exists whenever the price of an asset that may be freely exchanged in a well-established market first soars to levels that cannot be justified (Ironman, 2010). ‘Investors’ push the price of the asset up by irrationally purchasing it. Eventually, the market realizes that the asset price is unjustified and the bubble bursts. More often than not, the bust happens in an all-of-a-sudden manner resulting in people losing huge sums of money. At the same time, these boom/ bust cycle has its beneficiaries, institutions and individuals who make huge amounts of money by ‘surfing’ the bubble or by fuelling it. In the case of the dot com boom, the culprits were the investment banks and some venture capital firms. Events leading up to failure One of the issues that I believe to be partly responsible for the dot com boom happened when the Taxpayer Relief act of 1997 lowered the maximum tax rate on capital gains for individual investors from 28 percent to 20 percent for assets held for more than 18 months. This perspective, proposed by Zhonglan Dai, Douglas A. Shackelford and Harold H. Zhang. In “Capital Gains Taxes and Stock Return Volatility: Evidence from the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997“highlighted the fact that non- and lower dividend paying stocks experienced a larger volatility than high dividend-paying stocks. Stock volatility was substantially higher after 1997 and this may have contributed to the inflation of the bubble. It was not the main......

The No Baby Boom

...The No-Baby Boom [ This summer, 28-year-old Anthony Shepherd and his wife of seven years, Cynthia, will fly from China, where they've been teaching English since 2009, to Wisconsin for a vacation. In addition to relaxing, catching up with friends, and attending her brother's wedding, they plan on stopping by a vasectomy clinic. The People's Republic may be notorious for its one-child policy, but the Shepherds' attitude toward reproduction is even more stringent. Call it the zero-child policy. Even before the Shepherds left Asheville, North Carolina, for Sichuan province, they'd made their life decision based on the experiences of their "childed" friends. "We watched them struggle to pay bills, find suitable apartments or houses to fit their families, and work at jobs they didn't like because they needed the insurance," Cynthia says. So she and Anthony enthusiastically took a pass on parenthood, an increasingly common decision for America's couples. Related: Should Men Wear Engagement Rings? Considering the state of the economy, it should come as no surprise that the ranks of the child-free are exploding. The Department of Agriculture reports that the average cost for a middle-income two-parent family to support a kid through high school is $286,050 (it's nearly half a million dollars for couples in higher tax brackets). Want him or her to get a college education? The number jumps to nearly $350,000 for a public university, and more than $400,000 for private. Though...
