GENERAL OVERVIEW - BULGARIA

Current Status of Biomass Energy
There exists a large potential to utilize biomass as an energy source in Bulgaria. Bulgaria has a total land area of approximately 110,000 km2, of which some 6,200,000 ha, or approximately 60 percent of the overall land area, consists of arable and agriculture lands, and 3,903,000 ha, or approximately 30 percent, is forest cover. While information regarding the use and potential of biomass has been limited, there have been recent developments through pilot projects and preliminary evaluations that do begin to highlight Bulgaria’s full potential. Next to the country’s hydro resources, biomass accounts for a sizable share of Bulgaria’s final energy consumption, approximately 3.7 percent or 409,000 toe of the calculated 10,918,000 toe total consumption (Sofia Energy Center data report). Due to the lack of reliable nationwide assessments and data, it is estimated that in practice this number is much larger. The majority of the biomass energy consumption exists mainly in the rural areas, where fuelwood, followed by the residential consumption of wood briquettes produced from forestry wastes and sawmill byproducts amount to approximately 2 million m3 per year.

In addition, wastes generated from agricultural and farming activities are produced in large quantities and exploitation of these wastes can prove to be significant source for energy generation. As the land of Bulgaria is rich and fertile, farming activities occur throughout the various regions, although the majority of the farms are relatively small, independently owned entities. Currently, many organizations from the private and not-for-profit sectors such as Thermoconsult, EE Systems, Energoproekt and the Bulgarian Biomass Association have been actively performing research as to the feasibility and full potential of utilization of such wastes.…...

...Personal Energy Use My current energy usage consists of many forms of energy, mainly fossil fuels. In the home I use natural gas for cooking, and electricity for heat, hot water, and appliance usage. There is one other form of energy I use in the home and that is wood, a biofuel, as fuel to burn in the fireplace to help heat the house in the winter. On my way to work I use gasoline, another fossil fuel, as energy for transportation. While at work there is a large amount of energy usage, from powering the computer monitors all the way to supplying the power for ventilators so patients can breathe. My energy needs fluctuate throughout the year, as the summers and winters in Pennsylvania can be at the extremes. My energy usage in the summer is much lower than the winter. I rarely use my central air for cooling in the summer as I find opening the windows or spending time in the basement just as comforting. The days are longer which limits the amount of electricity I use for lighting. I do spend quite a bit of time traveling to the beach in the summer which uses a lot of gasoline. In the winter my energy consumption rises as the temperature drops. Electricity increases as the house needs to be heated and the days grow shorter increasing the light needed. The energy sources I rely on come mainly from fossil fuels, a non-renewable form of energy. The energy that we get from biofuels originally came from the sun. This solar energy was captured through photosynthesis by the plants used as feedstock (raw materials) for biofuel production, and stored in the plants’ cells. This energy-containing biomass is converted into biofuel through biochemical, chemical, and thermo chemical conversion processes. For example, ethanol, today’s largest volume of biofuel, is produced through a biochemical process. In this process, yeasts ferment sugar from starch and sugar crops into ethanol. Most ethanol is produced from sugar canes and cornstarch. Biochemical conversion techniques allow us to make use of more abundant “cellulosic” biomass sources such as grass, trees, and agricultural residues. For thousands of years, the Plains Indians (then early settlers) used buffalo chips to build fires to heat their tepees (and sod huts). This was probably the first use of biomass energy in America. Early settlers learned from the Indians to heat their sod huts. After the buffalo became extinct, cow chips were used. On the plains there weren’t many trees and coal had not been discovered there, so this was a matter of survival (Whyte n.d.). Once the chips were dried in the sun they were almost odorless, and placed outside the tepees and sod huts. Western pioneers would modify their stoves to burn cow chips as they were plentiful along the cattle drive trails where the cattle were brought to the railroad cars for sale, and transporting to other areas. They compacted hay and then twisted it into twig-like bundles called cats. When the settlers started farming on the plains, they used corn stalks, corn cobs, and sunflower stalks as a source of fuel.
