The Endocrine System- Hormones and Behavior

The Endocrine System Hormones & Behaviors

Our behavior is not solely a product of the nervous system. The endocrine glands are equally important parallel communication system in the body. The endocrine system is made up of glands that secrete chemicals directly into the bloodstream or the lymph system. I have found a table that shows which glands are in the body and what exactly they produce or do for a human.
Adrenal glands - Divided into 2 regions; secrete hormones that influence the body's metabolism, blood chemicals, and body characteristics, as well as influence the part of the nervous system that is involved in the response and defense against stress.
Hypothalamus - Activates and controls the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions, the hormonal system, and many body functions, such as regulating sleep and stimulating appetite.
Ovaries and testicles - Secrete hormones that influence female and male characteristics, respectively.
Pancreas -Secretes a hormone (insulin) that controls the use of glucose by the body.
Parathyroid glands - Secrete a hormone that maintains the calcium level in the blood.
Pineal body - Involved with daily biological cycles. Helps regulate the body rhythms and sleep cycles.
Pituitary gland - Produces a number of different hormones that influence various other endocrine glands.
Thymus gland - Plays a role in the body's immune system.
Thyroid gland - Produces hormones that stimulate body heat production, bone growth, and the body's metabolism.
Your endocrine system is a collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate your body's growth, metabolism, and sexual development and function. The hormones are released into the bloodstream and transported to tissues and organs throughout your body. The table…...

...Interview Profile Cheryl Denise Womack BEH 225 September 16, 2012 Dr. Jessica DeValentino Interview Profile I have chosen Diana Bederka to do my interview, because she is the only friend I have had that I really can call a friend. I met Diana back in 2009. Diana comes from a very medium size family; she is the only girl in the family on her mother side of the family. Diana is 45 years old. Diana did not go to college, but she is an apartment manager over an apartment complex with 75 units, as therefore as Diana’s friend she would be considered as a very, extremely, independent worker. So, my friend Diana would be a very good interviewee for me. Diana loves to observe, because she basically has the visual and I also feel that Diana can focus much better when she read about anything. Diana likes to watch the local news, documentaries, and any other programs instead of reading upon the follow items above. Diana is the apartment manager over the apartment complex where I live, and she knows several things about management. Diana prefers to study where there are no background noises, such as the television or even listening music. At Diana’s house, home, or even the library, there are more distractions. Because of this, she does not have her full focus on what she has intentions on studying. To contrast, I Cheryl Womack finds it easy to study at home in the morning, or late at night, because I have no distractions. I cannot concentrate with too much noise. The......

Beh 225 Checkpoint Motivating Employees

...CheckPoint Motivating Employees Lesley McDaniel BEH/225 October 5th, 2012 Dr. Karen Pasveer Is it possible for a manager to motivate and employee? According to Morris & Maisto, Intrinsic motivation is a desire to perform a behavior while extrinsic motivation stems from motivation to perform a behavior to avoid a consequence or punishment. In intrinsic motivation a child will climb a tree or play a game while an adult will play a musical instrument because they genuinely get enjoyment from the task. (Morris & Maisto, 2010). An employee who is intrinsically motivated may work with extra enthusiasm at a task while his manager is around. The employee does not necessarily work for a reward but because the employee is inspired from within to perform the task. The employee may complete a task that was quite difficult. Upon completion, his manager tells him that he did a great job and to keep up the great work but nothing more. This employee could then be less intrinsically motivated the next time he is to complete the same task or another one the manager may ask him to complete. Extrinsic motivation is what inspires an employee to complete a task for such things as a monetary reward or to avoid being punished. A manager may use this type of motivation while offering a raise in pay or a promotion. The employee would then work hard, never be late to work and be sure their tasks were completed correctly and on time. However, this motivation may decrease once the task...

Beh-225-Diagnosis-and-Treatment

...Diagnosis and Treatment Stefanie Shepherd BEH-225 Joanne Schrock Psychologists and theorists have been studying psychological disorders for many years now. Throughout history, different theorists have studied how different psychological disorders affect one's behavior. These theorists have developed their own theories on how to treat the different behavioral affects from different psychological disorders. Some psychologists believe genetics and hereditary factors cause psychological disorders while others believe they are a result from learning maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving. All psychologists and theorists believe different things when it comes to how psychological disorders are developed or what causes them, but their treatment aspects are closely the same. Mood disorders are one of many different psychological disorders. Mood disorders are disturbances in mood or prolonged emotional state. Bipolar disorder is a type of mood disorder. In this essay I will be discussing what bipolar disorder is, current trends of diagnosis, and the treatment available. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which periods of mania and depression alternate, sometimes with periods of normal mood intervening. Mania is characterized by euphoric states, excessive talking, extreme physical activity, and distractedness. People who suffer from bipolar disorder can be excited and full of energy one minute, and then be sad and depressed the next......

Beh 225 - Obsessive – Compulsive Disorder

...Obsessive – Compulsive Disorder BEH/225 Obsessive-compulsive disorder is type of anxiety disorder that is identified by unreasonable thought and fears or obsessions that will lead someone to do repetitive behaviors. People with obsessive-compulsive disorders will realize that they may not be a reasonable behavior, and they may want to ignore this type of behavior or even stop the behaviors. There are many thoughts, different mannerisms that an obsessive–compulsive person may experience, and can be caused by several factors. In today’s society, there are different types of treatments to help someone who has this type of disorder and it can be treated successfully. Like a needle getting stuck on an old record, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) causes the brain to get stuck on a particular thought or urge (Robinson, Smith, & Sega, 2011) . This is a normal behavior for a person who has OCD. Some have a fear of being contaminated by germs or dirt and will continuously wash their hands until they are chapped and are extremely sore. Despite their efforts to control the behavior, many will continue to perform this behavior. Some have a fear of hurting others or themselves, fear of losing things or not having something, an idea that everything must be perfect and orderly, and some will have interfering sexual or violent thought or even images. Hoarding, repeated checking, opening or closing doors, and cleaning obsessively are other cases that are a...

...Interview Gerald Trahan BEH/225 September 25, 2011 Pamela Applewhite Interview I am a law enforcement officer that is assigned to a task force, which targets high crime areas and crime trends in an area. Being in a unit as I am, you work with a partner every day and have a trust with that person. In the line of work you could spend more time with you partner than anyone else you might encounter. I had the opportunity to interview my partner, John Castelin. We have worked together for several years and live on the same block. I am six years older, but we share the same values and morals. When I found out about this assignment I knew who I wanted to interview. Castelin has stated that he has always been a hand on type of person because his father was involved in manual labor while he was growing up as a child. Castelin advised that by observing his father fixing vehicles in their garage he would pick up techniques that would help him fix vehicles today. Castelin stated that he would work summers with his father as a plumber’s helper. Castelin made it clear that he learns better if he can observe the task being done then reading about the task. Castelin told me that he picks up things a lot faster when he observes someone preform the task. However, he can still read the task and preform the task, but it will take much longer. Castelin told me that he graduated from college several years ago and maintained a high grade point average. Castelin was very certain......

Beh 225 Heridity and Hormones

...Heredity and Hormones BEH 225 October 20, 20011 The endocrine system is a system of glands and each gland has a type of hormone that secretes directly into the bloodstream. It helps coordinate and integrate complex psychological reactions the endocrine system, it also works with the nervous system because together they are constantly transferring chemicals to each other. The endocrine system has five glands and they all produce hormones for different things, they produce hormones and they spread through the bloodstream. We have a thyroid gland that produces thyroxin, which is a primary hormone that helps regulate the body’s metabolism. We also have a pineal gland, which creates the hormone melatonin, and this hormone helps with sleep-wake cycles. The parathyroids are four tiny organs that control balance. The pancreas controls the level of sugar in the blood this is controlled by two hormones: insulin and glucagon. The gland that produces the most hormones is the pituitary gland the hormones controls high blood pressure, thirst, sexual behavior and other body functions. The pituitary gland is the master gland because it affects other glands. Our endocrine system has a gland that produces hormones and if the hormones are not produced correctly it affects the behavior with our body. Other things affect us on in human behavior. We have two things that influences or affects the heredity on human behavior, which are behavior genetics and evolutionary psychology. The......

...BEH/225 Final Project Michael J. Beard Jr. BEH/225 06/05/2011 Tara Moser Abstract “Bah, Humbug, another party?” or “Happy Holidays, another party!” Your choice of greeting that you exclaim during the holidays may have more to do with your genetic make-up than your mood. For introverts like my-self living in an extroverted culture, the holidays and all they entail can and most times are like fingernails on a chalkboard. For all those who are introverted, all that holiday socializing seems to be an enormous waste of time and energy. Rather than being out there mingling at parties, introverts would rather be snuggled up reading a nice, fat book. Extroversion and introversion are terms used to gauge social styles. Extroverts like the person I am about to interview for this paper; are more comfortable interacting in groups and are more energized by being with others than by being alone. Introverts, on the other hand, are more at home with their own company than in throngs of interacting people. They are stimulated by private activities like reading, listening to music, or working on a hobby or project. The latter have to be dragged to parties, and the blizzard of festivities around Christmas and New Year’s ranks right up there with colonoscopies and root canals. Three-fourths of all people are extroverts. And, unless they have mastered compassionate acceptance of all sentient beings, they think introverts are plain odd. Extroverts have little......

...Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression Your Name Here BEH 225 Date Teacher Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression One very common type of psychological disorder is depression. “Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by sadness, loss of interest in activities and perhaps excessive guilt or feelings of worthlessness.” (Morris & Maisto, 2010, p. 398). Depression is the most common type of mood disorder. Most individuals who suffer from depression feel as though they do everything wrong and feel like they are a failure at life. They also tend to blame themselves for their problems. People who suffer from depression often lose interest in sex and food and are also likely to suffer from insomnia. They also have problems concentrating and suffer from short term memory loss. It is normal to be sad occasionally, but this is different from being clinically depressed. When there is a disturbance in mood that is a normal reaction or the disturbance does not last very long, there is no cause to worry; however, when it is long lasting and it is not a normal reaction it is classified as a mood disorder. Depression is mainly diagnosed by a person’s self-reported experiences or the person’s friends or relative’s voiced concerns. This then prompts a physician to do a mental examination to determine if the person is indeed depressed. After a family history is done, and the doctor is aware of the patient’s symptoms, the physician may ask the patient different questions......
