Was the use of Agent Orange worth it? Was it worth all the hard ache it caused to not only Americans but, also the lives of a whole entire generation of people from Vietnam? This essay is about how and why it shouldn’t of been used in the Vietnam war. And how if it wouldn’t of been used, would of saved thousands of lives. I’m not too sure what your prior knowledge is about Agent Orange so I’ll give you a little background information to it. November 1st 1955 America goes to war with North Vietnam in the attempt to end all communism in the world. The location of the war was in the lush and extremely dense jungles of South Vietnam proving to be very hard for our American soldiers. The herbicide Agent Orange was used to take out lots of the vegetation on the jungle floor to expose the enemy. Agent Orange was a very powerful and deadly chemical mixture of 2,3,7,8- tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dixoin (TCDD). *history channel* Which through experiments done on lab animals as proven to have done almost immediate health effects not including the issues that come with time such as various cancers and birth defects. Agent Orange proved to be very useful on the battle field during the war, completely destroying the plant life to expose the Vietnamese soldiers. The whole operation of using the herbicide was called operation “Ranch Hand”. *A* There were several ways (TCDD) was spread out all over the jungles, such as trucks, soldiers with spray backpacks, and most of all the was the C-123’s planes. Only 5% where sprayed by the ground forces, and 95% was sprayed by none other than the U.S. Air Force. The C-123’s where outfitted with specially developed spray tanks that could hold up to 1000 gallons in each tank.*D* In this time frame of the 1960’s and 1970’s Vietnam was actually split into two countries because of the over ruling of power communism. America was at war with north…...

Agent Orange

...Ruslan Vasilenko September 5, 2013 Vietnam and Western Imagination Paper Proposal Long Term Effects of Agent Orange I selected the topic of Agent Orange to write about in my final paper and all the controversial issues surrounding that topic. In that paper I will talk about the long term effects of Agent Orange that was used during the Vietnam War between 1961-1977. I will examine the effects it had on Vietnam people right away and in the long run. I will also talk about the political side of things and why it would be used in the first place. A brief history will be given on what it is, how it was made, how it was transported and sprayed over the Vietnam jungles, why things reached these extremes, who was behind the idea, how has the world responded in order to help those affected, and etc. I will also try and include the opinions of American and international populations on this controversial topic. The reason why I picked this topic is because I am always interested in controversial topics that humans have witnessed throughout history. These topics rise out of many occasions and especially during the times of war. Agent Orange is one of those topics because people have been arguing for many decades on both, negative and some positive, sides of it. It has caused a great deal of suffering and pain to those affected. It continues to have a tremendous impact on newborns and those people have yet to be refunded for their struggles even though its not going......

A Clockwork Orange

...The ability to choose between good and evil is something that we never really think about too often, or in any real detail. Even so; this decision that comes naturally to most, is something everyone must make throughout their life in order to guide their actions and control their future. This ability to choose, no matter what that choice may be or the outcome of that choice, displays a person’s power as an individual. Any attempts to control or influence that choice will, in turn, govern one's free will and enslave them. In the novel A Clockwork Orange, the author Anthony Burgess uses symbolism through imagery, the characterization of Alex, and a first person narrative point of view to show that without the ability to choose between good or evil, one becomes a slave. Symbolism through imagery explains how Alex's ability to choose between good and evil, is his ascendancy over the weak and innocent. The first of these symbols is the music that he loves to listen to. Classical music is the only thing that Alex's has ever truly cared for. The music represents an element of his choice and free will. When his ability to make choices is taken away from him, in an attempt to make him better, he is unintentionally forced to lose his passion for music, by which he exclaims, "And all the time the music got more and more gromky, like it was all a deliberate torture, O my brothers“. This music that once represented his freedom to choose is gone now, and he has been left without any......

Orange Production

...Orange Production ECO/561 December 16, 2013 George Sharghi Abstract In this paper, it will discuss the production of oranges in the United States. It will also examine the relationship of the demand for oranges to the price. In addition, it will discuss the supply of oranges and factors that have an effect on the supply of oranges in the U.S. Additionally; it will explain what factors would bring about a surplus and a shortage in supplies. Orange Production Oranges are a very popular fruit all over the world. The United Stated is the 2nd largest producer of oranges. “The market is relatively free and competitive, since the government does not intervene in the production and processing of oranges” (Baur & Orazem,). The demand for U.S oranges is expected to increase as the top producing country Brazil is expected to produce less and less oranges in the future. “Brazil’s production is expected to continue to fall in 2013/14 as many producers have uprooted their orange trees in favor of planting other more profitable crops. Brazilian supply is expected to become increasingly restricted, causing higher demand for US supply both within the US and also from the international market. Demand for US produce is likely to continue to rise, potentially resulting in a surge in exports while at the same time leading to an increase in the prices we pay.”("Could the US Citrus Industry Reap the Benefits of Falling International Production", 2013). Based on this information......

Love Orange

...Love-orange In the text Love-Orange the main theme is love and losing, because she experience throughout the text, the way she loves her imaginary orange and losing people around her: “That summer I saw more clearly the worlds awaited. Is was filled with many deaths that seemed to tie all the strands of my life together and which bore some oblique relationship to both the orange and the doll” (P 2, L23 – 26), in this quote she realise that people around her die, the girl is well a known of her problems and insecurities and she sees the dead as a part of her life, she accept it, because there is only a defined amount of love to one person with she describes as a love - orange. Although the death takes a lot of people around her, she sees the funeral as a vacation, a time to come out of the house and a break from her own world. She is smart but childish at the same time, that can only mean that she is older than 10 years, I would say that she where a teenager, because her grandparents where still alive. The girl, that we do not know the name of, often hides under the bed when strangers come by her grand parents house, where she lives. Every time strangers come by, she would say these words to her dog: “A world outside” (P 1 L 8), the dog is a bit redundant in the text, but still an object that is used to support the fact that she is a bit more like other people. She is different, and she thinks she lives in a ‘inside’ world, that is one of the reasons why her grandmother...

A Clockwork Orange

...Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" is an ideological mess, a paranoid right-wing fantasy masquerading As an Orwellian warning. It pretends to oppose the police state and forced mind control, but all it really does is celebrate the nastiness of its hero, Alex. I don't know quite how to explain my disgust at Alex (whom Kubrick likes very much, as his visual style reveals and as we shall see in a moment). Alex is the sort of fearsomely strange person we've all run across a few times in our lives -- usually when he and we were children, and he was less inclined to conceal his hobbies. He must have been the kind of kid who tore off the wings of flies and ate ants just because that was so disgusting. He was the kid who always seemed to know more about sex than anyone else, too -- and especially about how dirty it was. Alex has grown up in "A Clockwork Orange," and now he's a sadistic rapist. I realize that calling him a sadistic rapist -- just like that -- is to stereotype poor Alex a little. But Kubrick doesn't give us much more to go on, except that Alex likes Beethoven a lot. Why he likes Beethoven is never explained, but my notion is that Alex likes Beethoven in the same way that Kubrick likes to load his sound track with familiar classical music -- to add a cute, cheap, dead-end dimension. Now Alex isn't the kind of sat-upon, working-class anti-hero we got in the angry British movies of the early 1960s. No effort is made to explain his inner workings or take apart his......

Synthesis of Methyl Orange

...Synthesis of Methyl Orange Jineui Jung Abstract The purpose of this lab was to synthesize a synthetic dye, methyl orange. Methyl orange is a dye produced from a synthesis reaction between diazonium ions and aromatic structures. Dyes have basic structure of Aromatic N+N-aromatic, azo group. methyl orange was synthesized by coupling reaction between diazonium ion and N,N-dimethyl aniline under basic condition. Diazonium ion created from sulfanillic acid monohydrate and N,N-dimethyl aniline under basic condition. Basicity was tested with pH paper after adding sodium hydroxide which resulted in light blue color, representing pH value of 10. Product yield was calculated to 71.53% with percent error of 28.46% so it was determined methyl orange was fairly produced. Introduction Methyl orange synthesis is diazo coupling reaction between the diazonium sale of sulfanilic acid and N,N-dimethylaniline. The initial product gained through coupling reaction is red acid form of methyl orange and this later turned to orange sodium salt, called methyl orange. Dyes are used to give colors to fabrics and Chromophores, functional groups that absorb light, give color to these dyes. The most common chromophores are azo, nitro, and carbon groups. The method of diazotiation is dependent on how basic and soluble the amine being coupled is. As sulfanilic acid is insoluble in acid, sulfanilic acid is dissolved in a basic solution. Primary aromatic amines can be directly diazotized but......

Clockwork Orange

...A Clockwork Orange The movie starts out with the boys sitting around drinking in the bar. When Alex and his gang leave the bar, they go on a crime spree that involves mugging, robbery, a gang fight, auto theft, breaking and entering, and rape. The boys travel to the countryside with their stolen car, break into a cottage and beat up the man inside before raping his wife while making him watch. They then head back to the Korova, where they fight with each other. Alex, who loves classical music, becomes angry at Dim when Dim ridicules an opera that Alex likes. Alex punches Dim in the face, which encourages the others to turn against their arrogant leader. The next time they go out, they break into an old woman’s house. She calls the police, and before Alex can get away, Dim hits him in the eye with a chain and runs away with the others. The police apprehend Alex and take him to the station, where he later learns that the woman he beat and raped during the earlier robbery has died. Alex is sentenced to fourteen years in prison. At first, prison is difficult for him. The guards are heartless and cruel, and several of the other prisoners want to rape him. After a few years, though, prison life becomes easier. He befriends the prison chaplain, who notices Alex’s interest in the Bible. The chaplain lets Alex read in the chapel while listening to classical music, and Alex pores over the Old Testament, delighting in the sex, drinking, and fighting he finds in its pages. Alex is......

Agent Orange

...methods of modern warfare cause far greater devastation on the environment. The progression of warfare from chemical weapons to nuclear weapons has increasingly created stress on ecosystems and the environment such as Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Agent Orange is one of the potent herbicides used as a defoliant by the U.S. military in its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War. The name Agent Orange comes from the containers that it was stored in, which had an orange stripe. The U.S. military deployed almost 20 million gallons of herbicides from 1962 to 1971. Among these substances, Agent Orange was the most widely used herbicide, around 11 million gallons. The Vietnamese had the geographical advantages so they used Agent Orange, a mixture of toxins, to remove leaves from trees and bushes, leaving the enemies more exposed. However, the persistent nature of dioxins, erosion caused by loss of tree cover and loss of seedling forest stock meant that reforestation was difficult or nearly impossible in many areas. It has also been linked to many health problems in Vietnam veterans and Vietnamese civilians which caused thousands to die from conditions likely brought on by exposure to Agent Orange. Thus, Agent Orange has disrupted ecological equilibrium. When dioxin is not contained, it seeps into the ground and the groundwater sources, polluting the local ecology and becoming part of the food chain. When people eat animals and......

Orange Revolution

...Orange Revolution The idea of good government, freedom, and independence formulated a vast revolution in Ukraine. The Orange Revolution began late November 2004 and ended January 2005 when Ukrainians protested and overturned a fraudulent presidential election. Acts of civil disobedience, sit-ins, and general strikes caused the Ukraine’s Supreme Court to annul the presidential election results and order a revote. The Revolution was a great success and mandated a change to the Ukrainian constitution that shifted powers from the presidency to the parliament. Leader of the revolution, President Yushchenko was leader of the Our Ukraine faction in the Ukrainian parliament and a former Prime Minister (1999-2001). During the revolution he was able to keep a protest of hundreds and thousands of people amazingly peaceful. His political camp and supporters used the color orange to signify his election campaign which later represented the series of events to be called the Orange Revolution. His opponent was Viktor Yanukovych who was the sitting Prime Minister and also largely supported by Leonid Kuchma, the outgoing President of Ukraine who already served two terms in the office and was prohibited from running himself due to the constitutional term limits. During the 2004 election, Yanukovych had the support from the outgoing president’s administration that had power over government and state apparatus. In September 2004, one month before the first round of votes,...

A Clockwork Orange

...He had a devious smirk behind soft blue eyes. That was the first impression of the main character, Alex, in A Clockwork Orange. Alex is the leader of a gang of terrorists. The four men in the group seem to get off on a good time raping women, stealing, and beating on innocent people. They all seem to work together in collaboration to portray chaos, but Alex is the worst of them all. Alex treats his other three members as if they are below him and he is the tyrant of them all. Alex seemed to have one weakness: classical music. Classical music is the powerful back ground to most of the movie, and the actions seem to sync with the music dramatically. This gang was used to routine. Their routine was to go to the milk bar and scope out who they plan to assault next. They would go door to door begging for help as if one of them got hurt, and then force their entry. A writer and his wife were the first victim of the gang and were completely helpless to Alex’s mastermind. They raped his wife as the husband was forced to watch helplessly. They were able to get away on were just looking forward to the next occurrence. The woman of their next plot was a lot cleverer and did not fall for the boy’s begging at the door act. She implied that she was not comfortable letting a stranger in, but the determination of evil that ran in the boy’s mind did not let them give up. Alex simply broke into the home and got into a fight with the woman when she tried to resist. This brawl......
